How much were they?
« on: October 06, 2012, 10:16:48 PM »
Google has failed me!

I'm curious, back when they first came out, how much were G1 My Little Ponies selling for in toy shops? I wasn't really around then, and I only got into ponies about a year or two ago so I don't know much about G1.

Usually around $5, I think.
Nirvana grails:  Reverse Gusty (upgrade), Peru Windy and Moonstone (upgrade), Brazil TAF upgrades, Argie Powder w/ white hair (upgrade), French Windy and Moondancer (upgrades), Spain TAF's, TE's, and piggies.  These are my biggest wants, but I'm looking for tons more nirvanas, especially Greeks, Brazilians, and Peruvians.  Feel free to PM me for sales or trades.  But please note that I'm also fairly picky.

Anywhere from $5 to $20 depending on which pony you were buying and when within the line you purchased them. Single ponies in bubbles on cards were less expensive and then boxed ponies and in the early 80s ponies were of course cheaper than they were towards the end of the line.

If you follow this link:

(and if it doesn't take you straight to it, scroll down to about the fourth post on the 2nd page)

there's a page from a Sears Christmas Wishbook that has the original ponies listed at $4.99 USD and such.  I love looking through old catalogues, and wishbook web has quite a few! ^.^

I seem to remember my Baby Rainribbon being around $5.99, but I got her at the drugstore that my mom worked at and got her employee discount ;)

I can say that at least, in a store in Mexico, Baby Cotton Candy was listed at $17710 pesos as mine's tag says.  If I'm not confusing myself with numbers, now it would be $177.10 (and in US $14.00).

What I remember, is that I was angry because ponies were WAY cheaper in US than in Mexico, and the time when I went, couldn't get as many as I liked because: 1) I was a kid without money, 2) Parents thought it was time to say good-bye to toys...  (in the early 90's).

I know my boxed flutter still has her sticker, but I'm lazy to go check...something like 4.99, 5.99 or 6.99

If only we could pay that much for mint ones now. :yikes:

KayBee Toys was my vacation paradise!  There wasn't much in the way of toy stores in my hometown when I was little (just an "educational" toy boutique) and the malls hadn't encroached upon us yet then, so when we took our holidays in upstate New York, we always took a detour to whatever KayBee was closest.  That's where the lion's share of my childhood savings went.

Well, that, and those customise-your-own-tee-shirt places that used to make sweatshirts and tee-shirts with those gorgeous, sparkly, vinyl-like decals.  You know, this sort of thing?

I get very nostalgic looking at old boxes like that  >_< I can remember how they looked in shops, especially the ones in boxes. It's just not the same now. Maybe that's because I'm grown up and I can buy what I like. Haha.

You have to take into account 80's inflation...  a $5 pony was more like a $12 pony in today's terms.
