Okay have been playing multi-player on the Playstation Network lately and occasionally I use my headset during matches/Escalation...

I've recently had people direct their conversation to me (not in a bad way) or call me for help but they were saying my username differently to how I perceive it...

So, how would you ponies pronounce my username Xaniss? (I'm Xaniss77 on the PSN btw)

Would you say it as 'Ex-niss' or 'Zan-niss'? Asking as I'm confused.

I only speak English (and Google Translate  )  and it sounds (on said Google translate) like the 'k' is silent..? But I quite like that one...

I agree! Not only do we get variations (like the ksa-niss) I'm guessing based on native translations into English, but we get sound confusion for a word... very interesting.

"Zaniss", absolutely. There's no k (or eks) sound in words like a x in xylophone or the name Xander, so why do it in this case?

Same as the majority. Which has always struck me as funny actually. In my hubby's book series (Heroes Of A Silent God) his main character's name is "Zannis" and so when I'm watching him play his PS3 games and you pop online it confuses me for a second and then I'm like "Oh yeah! Duh!"

When I see a name that starts with an "X", the "x" is never pronounced as hard as a "z", but that's the closest way that I could write it.  It's one of those things I'd have to say out loud for someone to know what I'm getting it.  That said, I pronounce your user name Zannis.

My username likes to confuse people sometimes, too.  It's pronounced "Cat-ick-ah", but I get a lot of "Ka-tea-kah."  I wonder what rules people have picked up over time to influence how they read words they've never seen or heard before?

I'd probably just avoid saying your name. I mispronounce screen names like crazy.
