Weighting a pony down
« on: September 09, 2012, 12:46:41 PM »
Hello all -

I have a commission piece I am working on with sculpted wings overhead and it overbalances the pony - normally I would add a magnetic base so she would stay in place correctly - but I want this particular pony to be able to off of her base.

So i need some ideas and tips of how to weight her front part down - I thought about Apoxie but I think it will take alot to do so.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I know someone has used sand and wanted to know how to do that and how successful it was - this pony does have a deadline so I am getting her done as quickly as possible.

One thing to keep in mind is that if the pony is a light color, any filling might show when held up to the light.

I remember hearing someone used small fishing weights. If the pony is dry when they get put in, I would think that would be a safe idea. You could put a layer of Apoxie on tip to hold them in place. I think that if it were my pony, I would try the sand first, and still put a layer of apoxie on top to hold it in place.

Thanks Maniah - Hubby just suggested the fishing weights too :) Will see what I can come up with - I definetly want to apoxie the weight material in place as it will be shipped :)

I use fishing weights honey  Usually I mash them up with some apoxie and stick the weight wherever it needs to be to balance it out ^.^

I also use fishing weights. Bank sinkers, specifically. They fit in the legs perfectly!

fish weights would be my suggestion too- or you could try filling her front end with some sort of concrete mixture or sand. Not sure how that would work with the plastic tho

I would agree with the fishing weights idea, I would just make sure to get the lead free kind, I'm not sure if lead can seep through the plastic or not :)

Mixing the weights with apoxie is a great idea! Way less chances of them rusting through the plastic.

I've used old apoxie for weighting, but i've never needed to make it extra heavy. I'm thinkin' the fishing weights are gonna be your best bet!

I asked about fishing weights in my local game shop and came home with shots (for a shot gun!) instead! They did the job perfectly in my Rapunzel. :)

I use small clear glass marbles from a floral shop.  Then an oral syringe from the pharmacy to squirt triple thick over the top to seal it in.

The only thing I would be worried about is what some things might look like to customs agents if it's going to leave the country. Like the sand, for instance.
