Selling ponies for rent, bills...what a bummer.
« on: September 03, 2012, 02:00:52 PM »
Has anyone else ever had to do this? To get caught up or something?

I'm having to sell off all of my spares now just to keep the electricity on. I mean, once it's paid we'll be fine. I just really HATE selling ponies. *sigh* Especially since I'm a newish collector.

I've done it once. I sold everything except one custom, and a few ponies went to my cousin. I regret it because it wasn't dire, I just wanted the money to treat my real pony at the time.

Would I do it now? If it was the difference between Daffy getting something he needed and not, absolutely, but it would break my heart.

It's a tough call, but at the end of the day the ponies can be replaced.

Yes life comes before ponies - that is so true!

I sold half of my collection 8 years ago when my lovely cat was very sick and I tried to gave her the best treatment as possible...no chance...I put my cat to sleep 3 month after she becomes ill...

I stopped collecting at this point for around 3 years - then I started again and my collection is much bigger today then 8 years ago.

But I sold parts of my G3 collection when my kitty Maya becomes sick 3 times in 11 month...but I would always try to keep my entire G1 collection now.

But you know how live can be - so you never know what wll be tomorrow - and before I loose my flat, my kittys etc..real life comes before ponies.

When you need to sale them to pay bills - keep your fave ones  and the harder to find ponies - part with them they easy to replace later. :)

Sorry you have to sell your ponies :( that would be so hard!

I have never had to do that (yet) I am still just a kid and I don't have bills or anything. Whatever I sell is so I can get something else.

I haven't had to sell off anything from my collections, but our first dog got really sick shortly after we got him and we had to sell off several of my husband's more valuable MTG cards to pay his vet bills.

We're good at being frugal when necessary (it helps that I can survive solely on ramen), but usually we just budget our money as best we can. We have pow-wows about which bills are coming up when and plan according to that. If it came down to me selling off my collections to pay regular bills or vet bills, the ponies would definitely go first (sorry ponies, but my Pokémon collection stays!). It would suck, but like everyone else has said, my husband's credit and my animals' health come before my collections.

Good luck.

Not yet. I only have a months worth of bill money in my savings though which is not good, but mostly I'm that broke because my older sister took money from me and hasn't paid me back and can't because she's in jail. You're supposed to keep an 18 month buffer because that's how long it takes on average to get a steady job right now. If my dog gets sick or my car breaks down it may come to selling off ponies.

Aw! I'm so sorry!

I've never had to since I'm just a high-schooler so my parents take care of everything and we've never had trouble.

I'm actually toying with sell over 100 of my G1 MOCs:/ I was good for a few months after pony fair but now the money is running out and its gonna be the difference between buying gas and paying my student loans, over buying groceries and that's not a happy place to be:/ Not to mention hubby really needs a car that won't fall apart:( I'm probably just going to pick a few favorites and sell the rest but its so hard because I love them all over again the second I pull them out of their bins:(

I've been there before too. Surprised to see so many others have had to do it too! When I was in college living with some other girls, I ran low on rent and had to sell some of my G1's.

To add salt to the wound, I overheard one of my roommates say to the other "I don't feel sorry for her, she buys so many of those toys anyway." The nerve! Everyone has hobbies, some of us buy books or food or movies or video games. Just because I buy toys doesn't mean I'm throwing my money away.

Been there / doing that. I am thinning my collection down (losing the playsets, etc) because I am all but preparing to move out of this house at great speed. Read: I am running the chance of being kicked out if I 'come out' to my hilariously straight-laced, cantankerously angry parents. FUN TIMES.

But, yes, I've sold ponies, I've looked at them as investments, and it always, always feels bad in a way. I guess for me it's because I'm selling a luxury to pay for a necessity, and the knowledge that it's the pony or a food shop is... it's not a good place to be.
