I actually won something!

After all of the really great fantasy art I've submitted to the local fair without getting a single purple ribbon, I finally won one with... a pony. I don't know if I should be disappointed. I mean this is great, I won a ribbon! And yet... well. Fantasy art is my only real passion in this world, and for it to be seen as not good enough even by a local fair (and believe me, I don't want to toot my own horn but it is great art) I guess I'm just left confused. Maybe it's because South Dakota doesn't cater to people like me. Maybe it's because all those old ladies eat stuff like this up. I don't know. Somehow, this still happened:

Don't get discouraged about your other art.  Like you say, perhaps that particular venue just didn't have a lot of folks into fantasy art.  I know when I look at other people's work, I tend to quickly go by pieces with subject matter I'm not very interested in.  I have to consciously make myself stop and look and admire the skill and artistry that went into it and look past the fact I'm not crazy about the subject matter.  Does that make sense?  I'm sure the fair audience just didn't take the time to do that!  Don't give up on it!

Yeah, I don't think the fair people think too hard about things, especially my more intricate and subtle fantasy art. It's discouraging, but not as discouraging as the lack of comments on the back of my entry card they always write in. It used to be they would actually leave me concrit or helpful suggestions on the back, but the last few years they just write nice, or well done, or on this one "so delicate". Uh. How about an actual comment?

Way to go!!!! I have a hard time with fairs...because there is really no set foreground on what is expected from an entrance. I bet you other art was amazing and should have taken ribbons too:)

So yeah I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I know I need to get better and seriously I am, my differences in my gallery works is huge. I'm coming back to the old "old ladies in South Dakota" theory!

Congrats sometimes you need to do the art for the venue.  There are jurried shows you can submit your work to that you might need to mail them out but you might find they are better for what you do.
