Message About Sending Cash through Mail

This is just a reminder and a warning about sending concealed cash through the mail.

We feel this is necessary to post this with the influx of new members and a reminder for old.

Sending cash through the mail has never been a particular good idea, primarily because if such a shipment is lost, stolen, destroyed in transit, neither the sender nor the intended recipient may have any recourse to recover the funds.

Although there is always a risk sending anything through the mail.  Cash definitely has a higher risk of going missing.

Please if you feel it necessary and it is your only means of sending payment for an item.  It should be sent Priority Mail so there's delivery confirmation, and the envelope is big and rigid so no one would be able to feel cash in it. Or alternatively you could choose First Class and add Delivery Confirmation. Also another good idea for your protection would be to add signature confirmation to either of the above mentioned.  It may cost you a few extra dollars in the end but it is better than being out the full amount sent.

There are also other options such as a Personal Check or Money Order which are both safer methods than cash. Just use your best judgement!

I'm sure this post is because of me.  I sent cash to an Arena member who doesn't have PayPal, and I have yet to receive confirmation that it reached its recipient:(.

I've learned a valuable lesson *literally*: don't mail cash.

Oh boy, that is not cool michelle. I really hope it's just stuck in the mail and there is no dishonesty afoot.

This reminds me of back in the days of earlier Ebay when people used to send cash in the mail.

I sold a pony around Christmas time to someone who was sending me cash (we were even in the same state) and it took a "regular" #10 envelope 34 DAYS to arrive- we both thought it had gotten lost.

Happy story in the end, sorry to hear it has not been happy for others. I prefer PayPal or PO Money Order personally.

I've only sent cash once and luckily had no problems. I don't like doing it though, waaaay too risky!

Remember years ago when people would send cash in those long birthday cards? I wouldn't dare trust doing that anymore People are especially desperate in a bad economy so I wouldn't be surprised if postal workers opened up a letter that looked like cash.

Still no word:(.  I'm pretty sure it's been lost/stolen.  That really stinks!  This hasn't been a good post office month for me.

Well, I learned a lesson out of this.  It's a stinky lesson, but at least it wasn't too much money.

i honestly get weary when anyone tries to offer to send cash through the mail...   i had an incident once back when i was still a kid! i was like 14 and a member claimed they sent me a payment through the mail and it never got to me   but the backlash from that member (another pony forum) was so brutal saying i was lying. i cried over it, and ended up sending 100$ worth of ponies out of my own pocket just to get them to leave me alone.   only to find out a few weeks later she did this to others and then got banned.   i learned my lesson quick.  never except cash payments cause neither buyer or seller is protected.

I have sent many cash payments in the last year, and recently one never showed up. Presumably it was stolen straight from the members mailbox as they had other items not show up. =( Other than that I thankfully haven't had issues. I'd definitely recommend it as a last resort though - and if you do use this method, be sure to wrap the money up in dark paper so that it's well concealed. (Also I don't think it's wrong of anyone to offer to send cash, especially someone who has a lot of good feedback. It's not like you HAVE to send out what they wanted if the money doesn't get to you. A person sends cash at their own risk.)

Postal money orders I think are a great alternative - it will only cost you a little bit more to purchase it, and IF it doesn't reach its' destination, you can get a refund by presenting the PO with the stub (so ALWAYS keep your stubs until you have your items in hand!) Also, no one but the intended recipient can cash it because you write their name and address on it. I don't know about other money orders, but I would assume they work the same.
