If you have Scoops and her hat/apron it will be easy to tell them apart...the one in the right on Chips picture is Store version and the one in the left is one of the mail order versions

There are actually 2 variations on her smock and hat...just to confuse things further!

I'd love to see a pic of these ice creams too!  I have the MO set complete and it didn't have weird ice cream accessories.   I think I've got the two MO apron variations too.   I'll see if I can dig them out and take some pics. I was going to go shopping today but it's cold and I'd rather play with ponies

Chip mentioned that it does seem odd for an extra piece to have been added to the set but the set had been with a collector from new/mib and had only ever been on display rather than played with...I guess that gives us 2 options...the person with this set that I spoke to was simply confused and added this item from somewhere else or perhaps there are 2 MO versions one for each apron/hat release?

Oh and yes...stay and play and chat about ponies! Who needs shopping?...[trying to ignore empty cupboards and fridge which means I need a trip to the supermarket myself]

After a lot of digging, I pulled out my sets. I actually have two Mail Order sets and there are some differences. Since the set was sold a couple of different times, I think that may account for the variations.

The first one I bought many years ago. It was loose, but complete and seller claimed it was from her original collection.  She was missing the instruction sheet but had a scanned copy she included.  I don't know if it's the same instruction sheet, but it matches the one I got from my 2nd mail order set. 

The 2nd set is the one from the auction Hathorcat mentions!  I remember those ice cream bits now and ruled them out as MLP when I got them. They're in a miscellaneous accessory box that's buried at the moment. But they were a different plastic and the style was different. None of the pony pamphlets that show the MO SSSS set show those pink and yellow icecream scoops either. I believe it was a case of mixed up toy lines.  The seller even found the original mailing slip, proof it's definitely a mail order set.

Anyway, there are some differences between the two MO sets.

MAIL ORDER SET 1:  Pretty much identical to the store version set I have, except for the hat and apron pattern. 
~ Pastel striped hat & apron (pink yellow blue)
~ Hong Kong Scoops with bright pink scoops symbols in light purple sundae glasses (same as store-bought, unless I happen to have another one accidently with my store set!)
~ Base of playset is a standard bubblegum pink color (same as store-bought)

MAIL ORDER SET 2: 
~ Darker striped hat & apron (Purple teal blue)
~ China Scoops with magenta scoops in dull grey-lavendar sundae glasses
~ Base of playset is noticeably darker pink

Bottoms of playsets - MO set 1 on the left.  Doesn't look to be a case of yellowing or fading. They appear to be distinct plastic colors.

So it looks like 2 different MO Sets - one made on HK and one made in China...hence the different apron/hat sets? Fab!

Thanks for filing us in Ashlyne... your collection never ceases to amaze me- and I guess Cat we found the owner of the set in your photo!

On a side note I got in what I believe to be Bootsie & Tootsie's bottles- they a rubberized unlike any other accessory I've seen; so it possible that the extra icecreams could possibly be unlike anything else and actually belong to the set?

At any rate I NEED that China Scoops w/ smock & hat!

There was a MO SSSS? *facepalm* I don't even have the store version yet...one of the last playsets I need to get.

I love Sweet Scoops in the darker colours though

This is so confusing! I have a SSSS and my Sweet Scoop's hat and apron's strips are pink purple pink, so she the MO one or the store bought one? And all this talk has made me want some ice cream!

hmm i think i have both china and hong kong scoops. didn't think one was mo either, or there was a difference! glad this came up!

also wow that packing slip is from may 1993?!?! ponies were way discontinued by then and when we use to call hasbro, they told us the MO ponies were no longer..

The last MO brochure the SSSS appears in is dated 1992 and you needed 3 horseshoe points to send away for it - so I imagine by the time you get the other couple of ponies needed and then send your money and tokens away and then by the time the mighty Hasbro turn everything around it would have been into 93 before the items arrived.

I had these as a child!
They came with a cafe which was shaped like a giant cupcake and also came with matching pink muffins in green cases..
Now to think that kind of playset it was, my dad got me it from the bootfair..
To google! I'll come back of I find anything!
