Attempting my first corset
« on: March 15, 2012, 08:49:20 AM »
I'm attempting my first corset pony, and I was wondering if there were any tips that anyone felt like sharing about how to make these.

I think I have decided on an around the waist only style, with no shoulder or neck straps. Im not sure about frills though.

Im honestly just curious as to what tips and advice people would feel was most important to share :)

The easiest way I have found to do corsets is roll out a thin layer of apoxie sculpt, then I cut it close to size, put it on the pony then I use my clay tools to finish trimming it up and shape it. You can smooth with water, and at the end a little hand lotion just remember clay will not still well to clay that has hand lotion applied.

What about frill sand ruffles and stuff? Any tips on the embellishments? And if it has a skirt, skirt first then corset? Or corset first then skirt?

depending on the style hon depends what order (though only attempted one myself) My method was thin rolls of apoxy to do outlining, then filled in the gaps and smoothed down. I then added ruffles, bows and details afterwards:
1. small rolls to outline
2. fillered in the main bodice of the corset
3. added the lacing and shoulders
4. added ruffles

Thank you for the tips thus far folks :)

She looks very cute Lilacamy. I love the color scheme and how you made it look like shes got ribbons threaded in the corset.

Yes order depends on type being made as well as preference. With any sculpting it is always best to do layers, like the base of the corset; letting it dry then adding a bit of embellishment for example.

If you're going to do a fabric style or even sculpting... I found the best way to go about it is to use a strip of wax paper and wrap it around the belly. Then use a marker or pen to mark where it needs to be cut so the end pattern conforms perfectly for that pony. You can then use a sewing machine or put embellishments on by hand once you cut out the main piece.

I've never used apoxie but I've used colored sculpey and fimo which work great because you don't have air dry time and you can attach lace, ribbon rhinestones, etc to it before baking.

I did the corset part first and then attached the ruffles.

I think this one shows it the best

I, too, find it's easist to put the clay on roughly the right size and then trim it down. That way you don't have to worry about getting it the right shape and trying to fit in on the pony, and don't have to worry about stretching it while you're moving it or anything. And you can play with the shape easier that way, too.

I used apoxie to make twisted rope braid trim to put around the edges, which helps cover any imperfections where the ruffles join and I think gives it a nice finished look.

Wow NoDivision! Such tiny twists of apoxie. Mine always breaks if I roll it out too long, let alone try to twist it. That is amazing!

On an unrelated note, I find it a huge coincidence that your name in the photo, is so similar to the name of a voice actress that my husband and i looked up earlier today, from an anime. Her name was Colleen Clinkenbeard.

Welp. Got the basic shape of it laid out. Played around with some scraps for ruffles and such. I think I could do them, and do them nice, if I had room to do so. I want a cutie mark design, and it will take up too much room to do the ruffles unfortunately.

When it dries, I'll sand it down and add details to it. Boning. Laces. Eyelets.

Thank you for the tips so far!

Wow, looking really great. I personally smooth my sculpt out with lotion. It tends to work better, just make sure you wipe off any excess lotion that gets on the pony afterwards. It tends to be a pain once it's dry.

As Zarine said smoothing it down with lotion works best, usually do not have to sand after doing that. I hate sanding so I try and get it as smooth as possible.
