oh, I can totally understand you! I usually get very attached to objects, especially if they are not just lying around (I am more than attached to my laptop I'm writing on at the moment)!
I don't have a car yet, but, funny or not, I'm already emotionally attached to my future car. ever since I was little I knew that if I ever have a car, it will be a Mini (the original, not one of these newer 2000's models), and I already know how I will name it, and what I will have on the dashboard. I got really close to buying the latter several times already, but not the car itself - as a student I could never dream of buying something in this price range. now that I work I have already started putting aside for it, as well as stalking websites that sell used cars.
and yes, I already have bad thoughts of it getting stolen or damaged. parting with it once I finally have it? I guess never  >_<

My first car was an old 92 Saturn. I had it for 8 years and had to make a few moderate repairs on it. By the time the transmission started to go, it had a large amount of small problems and I was ready to see it go. My used but much newer Chevy Malibu was different though. It took me five years to pay it off and I only got one more year out of it. It had a handful of small issues, but on July 5th I drove to work. It seemed fine but I couldn't get it to turn over after work. I had it towed and they told me I needed a new engine. I was so upset, but it wasn't worth the money to put a new one in so I had to scrap it. I was so miserable. This might sound lame, but it felt like someone died. I think it was because it was so sudden. I had never named it or anything, but it had been so reliable in the past I felt like I was just throwing it away like a piece of trash by scraping it. I just didn't have a choice  Then I bought the car my grandpa was leasing, a Hyundai Sonata. It's such a nice car and it's only three years old. I'm pretty fond of it, so everything worked out. I still get kinda sad thinking about my Malibu though.

Awesome!  What year Thunderbird?

It's a 96 so not tooo old. New enough to be semi-reliable and within my price range. One day I hope to get an older one :)

I loved my dads old car, a 68 Plymouth Road Runner. I cried when he sold it. It was old, but a wonderful car. Now, I love my van, but it wouldn't bother me to let it go. My husband on the other hand, just bought his dream truck (Chevy Silverado 4X4) and it is his baby LOL.

I was so upset when I had to give my old car up (1 month ago) we had had 7 fantastic years together and literally went through hell and high water. 53 nissan micra that thought he was a 4x4.  no matter what was wrong with him he ALWAYS got me home.
it nearly drove me to tears when I had to hand over mickey's keys to the garage.

I actually told the guy to look after him. only to get a reply that he was going to be on the back of a truck in two days and on the way to auction in chester (miles away from me) which made the good buy harder still.

then I am driving digger (my new 12 plate nissan micra (I love nissans)) who many I add is a total star and a very worthy replacement for mickey. but who do I see driving around keighley my little man. he never made his truck in the end

My new car got a flat tyre tonight.  15 years in my truck and I NEVER got a single puncture!

I do :)
My car belonged to my grandfather who passed last august. It was his pride, and now it's my pride. I've basically overcome my fear of driving  ^.^

Trust me, semi-reliable is a very good thing!  Vintage car ownership can get expensive quickly. ;)

And the '96 Thunderbirds are great looking cars.  What older generation T-Bird are you considering?

I absolutely adore my car. She's a silver 2008 Honda Fit that I was fortunate enough to buy brand new. (Probably the first and last time that  will ever happen to me! :P ) Her name is Misfit and I will most likely drive her until the wheels fall off! This is the day I brought her home.

My Pontiac grand am <3 Back in my uber gothy days I drove this. I adored this car, I lived in this car for a few months. Sadly it was stolen and funny enough regardless of what you see on tv, stolen cars don't show back up all that often. I still have tugs at my heart when I think about this car.

I think there's always a love for our first cars, its that first huge chance of freedom.
