Pony Corral / Re: What's with the freaky artwork for G4 ponies?
« on: May 05, 2013, 10:33:18 PM »
It goes away when you've gotten a certain number of posts. 25 or 50, I think? It should say in the rules
Ahhhh, thank you! I'll reread.

In this case, it hits harder because this show was meant to have a feminist message, and tell girls they can be anything they want to be. For people to come in and hijack that message to sexualize the characters is just galling. I'm not talking about the non-sexual art; I love SFW fanfic type things and write them myself. It's the stuff that's ludicrously out of step with the show's message that gets to me.

I suppose then it comes down to whether or not you think that depicting a female character, explicitly, as a sexual being is anti-feminist. I don't personally think so, but that's a matter of opinion. :)

>Comparing demeaning, sexist and often graphically violent/degrading porn wholly intended for the male gaze to feminists reclaiming their sexuality from a patriarchal society

I ... I just ...
I hit my daily post limit (please tell me that goes away when my account's not so new?) after that post, so thank you for putting my thoughts so succinctly. :) There's a huuuuuuge difference between healthy, enjoyable sexuality and a huge amount of the pony art I've (unfortunately) seen.

I accept that it's always going to be a thing, as it is in all fandoms, but I would much prefer for it to be in its own labelled and locked, 18+ forums, not invading my wholesome, cute show.

You pretty much summed up my thoughts. Exploring a character's sexuality is not inherently bad or wrong - but no one should have to see it who doesn't WANT to. People aren't allowed to show porn in public for a reason! It's basically removing consent, and I'm sorry, but if you don't think people should be able to choose not to see porn ... I think you have some problems with your logic.

But, yeah ... a lot of the porn I have seen is NOT feminist. Graphically degrading, demeaning and fetishizing porn is not feminist, sorry I'm not sorry. Porn of underage characters is not feminist, and I'm honestly agog that anyone can think that male-gaze-laden, fetishizing and degrading sexual material is "feminist" just because there are women in it. Spoiler alert: men making porn for the arousal of other men is not feminist! (That said, I'm sure there's feminist MLP porn; but even then, people should be able to choose not to see it!)
I think if I had to choose the thing that bothers me most, it's the rape jokes. Porn can be drawn in a sensitive, acceptable way (even if it's not something I want to see); rape jokes are never okay and it bothers me immensely that certain members of the fandom have made it a thing.

It bothers me when people fawn over Lauren Faust, then turn around reduce her wonderful, nuanced female characters to "lolz pinup art!  OMG look rarity is wavin her butt in ur face!"    Very disrespectful to Faust's vision and to the spirit of the show, IMO.

Well said. This is basically the reason I haven't jumped into fandom til now. I literally can't go into most fandom spaces without seeing sexualized pony images, and it saddens me, especially with how wonderfully the characters are written, and how rare that is in shows today. I mean, I went into a stream of season 2, and within ten minutes they were saying awful things about Apple Bloom! DDDD: That's why I was so happy to find this forum and the Trading Post.

What bothers me most is the kids searching for their favorite pony and finding...that. It's happened to my friend's goddaughter, who's six, and I just...argh.

I don't think it's disrespectful at all, and I'm certain that most of these people are not intentionally disparaging the creators. As I've said, I've looked up art of other fandoms, and it wasn't for sexual reasons; I found it fun because it added an interesting new layer to the characters not explored in the original content. Of course, for whatever reason anyone wants to enjoy it is fine, but I really don't think anyone puts pen to paper with the intention of destroying anyone's vision. I understand you're frustrated, but I think that's a rather extreme judgment to make of someone you don't know.

Why would you let young kids unsupervised online anyway? That's just bad parenting. D:
I don't think supervising would help in this case. Unsavory art is gonna come up if you google image a pony unknowing what the fandom has done, whether a parent is there or not. All a parent can do is quickly close the tab and hope the kid didn't see too much.

And honestly? It shouldn't be like that. Every fandom is gonna have some NSFW fanart, but this is just...ridiculous. :|

Same, I went to Target today and went "Wow, this is sad." It looked completely cleaned out.

Thank you all! ^^ This looks like such a welcoming forum!

So far, I've made cupcake caramel for Pinkie Pie and apple cider caramel for Applejack. They're all available in my Etsy shop, and the pic in my link is clickable. I'm giving away caramel and an Apple Bloom blind bag necklace. ^^

Introductions / How are you? I'm new!

Hi! I'm Shiro, and I am brand new to pony collecting. Mostly lately I've been collecting blind bags, though really I'm on the lookout for anything interesting! (My holy grail right now is an alicorn Flitterheart, pleeeeaaaase PM me if you have one to sell! Or trade, though I don't have much trading material yet.) I'm 21, live in Virginia, work in a bakery, and have been compared to a real-life Pinkie Pie. Currently, I'm working on making pony-themed caramel flavors!
