The "Midnight Castle"/first G1 special has gorgeous animation that I think has held up very well, though of course if you're used to the post-Toy Story world you may not think so. The TV show was a lot rougher--completely different goals, production, timetable, etc.

ValetOfSpring, I know what you mean, I also prefer my ponies not to have electricity and appliances.  And just being . . . less suburban than PE seems to imply ponies are.  The thought of ponies sitting on the pony-couch watching the pony-TV kills me a little inside.

Yes, me too! And I also grew up in ranch style house, so that may also explain my preference for castles. Sadly though my parents' house didn't have an indoor (semi-indoor?) pool!

My favorite pose actually is the collector pose, but ONLY the upright version from later Year 1 and Year 2. The FF pose is absolutely terrible. Once Hasbro corrected the pose to stand up well it's the best IMO. Nice and simple, and the facial expression is so sweet.

Otherwise I'd say the poses for Bow-Tie, Glory, Firefly, Posey, Heart Throb, Gusty . . . the Year 4 poses are generally fine minus Shady. Year 5 is generally a little more awkward (Quackers). After that things spin a bit out of control (those pocket ponies).

The flat iron can work wonders on some ponies' hair but not others. I'd be interested if others have had success but I haven't found that fluorescent yellow or red hair responds well to heat. Maybe that is the trouble with Yum Yum if you're trying that approach (without looking her up, I'm picturing her as dark purple w/ "electric banana" hair, yes?).

Oooooh I've been away--happy to see my post is still alive! :)

The PE is definitely fun to set up and look at but I am a Year 2 devotee and so I will always be Team Dream Castle. I also prefer an MLP world that doesn't require electricity . . . aren't ponies pre-industrial? Are the PE kitchen appliances and ceiling fans powered by the Dream Valley Electric Company? Did the sea ponies rig the waterfall to produce hydroelectric power? So many questions . . .

Yes it definitely takes up lots of space! I have it in a closet at my mother's house. I haven't set it up in a long while although it is a pretty impressive set all put together.

If anyone reading this wants a really nice, complete PE and lives in VA, NC, SC, or GA, send me a PM!

I mainly wanted to make sure that the bottom hadn't fallen out of the G1 market altogether. I know a lot of the original collectors from the 80s (myself included) have been at this for years and are getting up there in age, and I don't have a sense for the degree to which the collector base is expanding, with or without the influence of FiM.

Hello! I haven't been spending much time on the boards lately, so I'm sorry if I've missed any similar discussions. I did some selling earlier this year, and in doing that and spending time on eBay, it seemed like prices generally were down. I know there is a lot of flux with many items, and the time of the year *may* have some effect, but things just seem low to me. And some items seem not to be moving at all, even at reasonable prices.

A couple of years ago I bought a Paradise Estate on Craigslist (very exciting for me b/c I always wanted one and never got it!) and it was in very nice shape with the box. At the time PEs that were complete were selling on eBay for $400+, and one I remember went for $600+. I wanted to fill mine out b/c I'm an accessories nut, but I also knew I couldn't keep the PE indefinitely b/c of space, so I there was an added benefit to filling it out b/c I figured I could make more money selling it later. Now I'm seeing that some comparable PEs are sitting for less than $200, and one that is about like mine (but w/o the box) is at $99 with no bids. I know shipping is expensive for this set . . . BUT . . . it's the Paradise Estate! And shipping was expensive two years ago.

Any guidance or perspective from people more in the know is appreciated. I have some more G1s and accessories to sell soon, and it's hardly worth it if they aren't going for much (I'd be more inclined to put them all in a lot). As for the Paradise Estate, can I get a reasonable return on my investment? Those knives etc were a bear to track down!

Thanks! :)

Welcome Ruth Bush! Thanks to you and others for sharing these wonderful images . . . the artwork for the Flutter Pony house is just beautiful (the G1 artwork was sooooo fantastic--I was so lucky to enjoy it when new in the 80s!).

I *always* thought that Hasbro should have done a picnic set (I wanted one so desperately), so I feel vindicated that at least one was planned if not put into production. I'd love to see better pics of that.

Again, so great to see the wonders of could-have-been! :)

Purpleglasses--I'd definitely shop around a bit, despite how enticing it must be to see it in person! I sold a really nice Dream Castle with almost all the accessories + a bunch of ponies in an eBay lot for I think around $120. Sometimes there are a number of castles listed, and just from looking occasionally I don't think they are going for what they used to. Playsets may be down overall--it seems like Paradise Estate is significantly lower than it used to be.

If you're in the US, the shipping on a castle will probably be around $20, and the castle you described in the shop is probably not worth more than $30.

Always be sure to ask about the hinges--at least one of the hinges on the castle is almost always broken, but it can still stand up and hold together with one or two broken hinges. More than that and you've got problems!

Good luck!

Ugggh, yes, the flat hair that Majesty and Sprinkles sometimes have is just awful. It makes you really appreciate regular quality MLP hair. And receding hairline Majesty just makes it so much worse! I've wondered if Hasbro did this to accommodate the original design of the crown (if you look on the box, the crown holds on by curving around the pony's ears), but it may have been so that the damsel hat could sit flat. Either way, terrible idea.

On a slightly side note, I greatly prefer how Majesty and Sprinkles look at the playset boxes to how they actually came. They fooled around with Majesty's symbol and of course Sprinkles went from blue to that drab lavender!

I did have the Waterfall as a child and fortunately my Sprinkles came with regular hair. I would definitely remember if she'd had flat hair. Incidentally I also got the MO pink Sprinkles and Majesty.

The first adult set of sea ponies, are much easier to find. The shells are still expensive but you could be more like $30 for the pony + shell rather than $200 if you start with the first set.

The first set of adults is so underrated in my opinion. I felt as though I got a steal when I was new and bought all mine. and a steal again when I got them MIB. They are just beautiful set up together with their stuff. actually, all the 83'/year line. I love the colour palette for that entire year! it was very thoughtfully done so all the ponies and accessories really go together.

I agree :) They are just very unique in their simplicity and so pretty!

Me too!

Pony Corral / Re: 'Old' collectors: how have things changed?

Ha ha--reading these posts was a walk down memory lane! I joined eBay in 1998 and got involved online w/ MLP then. It's funny b/c at that point it felt like it had been FOREVER since I bought MLPs in the store, but I had gotten Petite Ponies in 1991-92 when I was in 8th grade or so and did not get rid of my original collection (sad face) until the end of 1994.

EBay was something so new and I remember Oprah having a show about it with experts talking about how to use it and what to do/not to do. People were getting scammed left and right over Beanie Babies and many other things. Someone paid $2000 for "Wingless Quackers" and got a regular "winged" one from the seller with the wings cut off. MLP wasn't as risky b/c the prices were nowhere near that high. When I was first on eBay, I remember there might be 300-400 MLP listings max. As LadyMoondancer said, there were almost no pics at first, so it really was a roll of the dice to see what you got! I got really lucky with one lot and I still have some of those ponies--almost 20 years later!

I was one of the people who was suspicious of PayPal at first and wouldn't use it. I am sure I sent cash through the mail dozens of times! Luckily I never had any problems.

I do remember that feedback on eBay was kind of a free for all. When I would buy or sell with people on the MLPTP or wherever who were also on eBay, we would leave each other feedback there even though we hadn't used eBay for that transaction.

The internet is more perhaps "lights on" now? Most of the MLP info back then (like everything else) was on private, very very homemade web pages that could be difficult to navigate or even read . . . and the G2 wars only added to the "darkness"!

Price Check Archives / Re: G1 Pony Wear general info and PC PICS
« on: June 05, 2016, 08:11:39 PM »
Hello! First, let me say I don't know much about the baby pony outfits--I know the pocket pals are often somewhat sought after but I doubt they're very expensive. What you have left is *very* common pony wear. Pony wear itself tends to be ignored by most collectors, so the demand is low while the supply is high. Sweet Dreams and Great Skates may be the two most common pony wear outfits. Since you'll be at the fair, you may be able to sell them for $3/each since someone can just pick them up (no shipping). At least they are complete (the Great Skates headband is easily lost). The Flashprance and Pom Pom Pony bits are <$1 each.

Common combs and brushes usually go for $1-3 based on just how common they are. Ribbons are usually $2 if they are in good condition, maybe $3, maybe a tad more if they are less usual colors.

If you're selling the dark green, yellow, or purple shooting star/comb sets that came with Rainbow Ponies, let me know! I'm not going to the fair but I'd love to buy them!

The Collector Pose! It's such a sweet pose and the face is adorable. Just CF--not FF! I don't like FF at all! :)

First runner up is sitting pose, following by shy pose.
