Pony Brag Arena / Ponies Literally in the Wild

I wouldn’t expect to find a slightly smooshed (she’s been out in the sun a while and obviously stepped on) G1 Petite Pony in the middle of the sidewalk while out on a walk in 2021, and yet here we are.  Usually I’m adverse to collecting duplicates (I still have all of my sunsparkle ponies from childhood, and they're in quite nice shape) but I’ll gladly make an exception.  I have a real soft spot for found ponies, considering I found my rather chewed Locket under a bush as a child at the park.  This was something nice to find that I needed right now, it really made me smile.

Edit: I can't be totally sure where she came from but we've been having a lot of rain (as is normal for winter) and I was walking by an area that is eroding quite a bit - perhaps she'd been buried in a yard or something.)

This colorful custom is Rainbow Rondeau!

She is a customized G1 Parasol who sat for quite some time, sadly permanent pen marked, as I figured out how I wanted to customize her to give her some new life.  I waffled between doing something accurate to the G1 merry-go-round ponies (who I think are very sweet) or going a bit more fanciful.  Fanciful won out as I wanted to do something with lots of pastel rainbows.

Her new ‘saddle’ is sculpted with colorful blends of sculpey III and glazed with a matte acrylic.  I think there might be a bit of Rainbow Brite influence in here too, along with Fairy Kei.

I’m quite happy with her and would like to do more in a similar style if the right baits come along (I try to be sympathetic to the bait with how I customize - doing things more and more complex the more extensive the damage).

Here’s a lovely little custom G1 My Little Pony - Winter Frost!  I’m so happy with her.  She’s been a long time coming as I patiently waited for her marker stains to peroxide and sun-fade (she has a spot or two still, but as she’s likely to go in my collection that’s fine for me.  It’s the nature of 30+ year old toys).

I wanted to make a pony who was very reminiscent of the base she uses - a Majesty who had been previously customized before coming to me (a full body repaint in a rather sorry, chipped, and sticky state) but was a wholly unique pony.  I wanted her to look as though she could pass as a G1 design (although I know the glitter design would be two colors rather than three - nothing wrong with a little artistic license).  I waffled on a design scheme for her, but decided to go with hair colors more or less flipped from her base and a symbol in tasteful blues with a nice wintery theme.

This is my first time using hair from the Doll Planet (instead of Dollyhair.com) and I must say - while TDP nylon is finer than the original MLP nylon (Dollyhair’s is closer) it has an absolutely gorgeous soft and silky feeling.  It’s so nice to touch!  It’s super bouncy too, which gives it a nice body.

No before photos for this gal - it didn’t occur to me to get them in time!

Customs / Constellation Pony - Ophiuchus
« on: September 30, 2019, 08:08:54 PM »
This very purple custom was an experiment in dying a pony to cover age spots.  I know using dye comes with a lot of possibilities for going wrong - so I used a baity Majesty who was badly spotted with what was either age spots or marker which failed to sunfade.  Thankfully the purple covered these spots, although she will be displayed carefully to avoid staining other ponies.  Interestingly I had to learn that it takes Rit Dyemore dye to dye the vinyl of pony bodies (regular Rit works on their nylon hair).

I’m very pleased with her!  She is now Ophiuchus, or at least that’s her symbol, and she now has a permanent spot in my own collection.

And everyone likes before photos too, right?  First is as she came to me (as a bait) and second is after cleaning, attempted sunfading (6 months peroxide soak), and some hair straightneing (she wasn't in as good of shape as I would have liked, and so I wanted to experiment with some dye.  I've had better results depending on the damage, I'm always trying to push my restoration work, but I like to customize too.  Here's some of my better restoration work, if you're curious.https://mlpmemories.tumblr.com/post/169868777100/this-pony-cleaned-up-so-dramatically-its-hard-to)

Wanted! / Deflock Canidates
« on: October 23, 2017, 07:30:08 PM »
I've decided it's time for me to do some more pony restorations, and I'd really love to try my hand at de-flocking.  It's just about the only form of restoration I'm interested in that I've not tried.

I'm not picky, since this is for a particular kind of restoration, and so long as the body is solid (no chews/missing bits) nothing else really makes much difference.  I can always re-hair if need be.  It might go without saying, but I'm really only interested in ponies that are in poor enough condition to merit de-flocking, if the flocking still looks good, I'm not keen to mess with them.

Additionally, also always looking for any super baity ponies (any gen) or Monster High (with articulated arms/knees) too.  Stuff that's generally considered 'unsalvagable' (marker, chews, discoloration etc.) or half-finished custom projects that never worked out is absolutely my cuppa, (although de-flocks are my first priority right now).

(If you're curious I have some examples of my restorations here: http://mlpmemories.tumblr.com/tagged/Before-and-After.)

As I'm not online too much, please PM me if this is something you may have to offer!  I always check my messages.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be selling, but this has been a year of big bills for my partner and I, and liquidating some things might alleviate a little of the burden.  With a sick kitty back in January, two car repairs (one that just now totaled $1700), the other half's hours being cut in the winter and myself covering all of the rent and most of the bills for a time it's been a year of $$$.  I have enough in savings that we're not hard up, but the way we're burning through things, liquidating a few things might just take some of my mind off money for a while.  I realize this isn't a terribly rare or valuable bunch, but knowing possible values does help.  I'm not settled on what I'm going to do, just... any knowledge is good.

I might list my childhood collection here too for a PC if I could further entreat help, just out of curiosity... I don't think I could part with them.

Pony Brag Arena / Hannah and Pearl's Pirority Swap - Joint Brag
« on: October 16, 2015, 07:16:03 PM »
Couldn't think of a better title!  This was a great private swap, and our aim was to fill a small priority box with some ponies and goodies for each other!  I'm just wowed with the colorful packaging Hannah did for me.  Look at all of this orange!  I'm very fond of orange and I LOVE Halloween.  We're getting on to that time of year so this all felt very festive, special, and appropriate for this time of year.

First off, the goodies!  Lovely orange Lindt Truffles and Orange Sticks yum yum yum!  Cat and I broke into those right away while opening the box (he's not a collector, but he's always curious on things and does think the ponies are quite cute and charming).  Both of us haven't had orange sticks in years, I'd forgotten how tasty they are.  Cute pony stickers too!

Next up came the kitty gifts since we had 'help' at that point.  Thorin (the Meez) just loves the catnip mice and had to have one right away (he carried it off the second I got it off the card).  Everyone is enjoying the treats (though Shou (the fluffy Calico in back) likes them most of all.  Pippin (not shown, a shy, big, black kitty) is also content with both)

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Anywho!  On to the main event!  Oh man, so many lovely MLPS and MLP things!  Doesn't everything look nice all together?  First off, a lovely baby seapony (Seawinkle) WITH her float!  Oh so nice.  She's in pretty nice shape all things considered for a sea pony.  That hair is so unusual on the color changing ones.  Pity they loose their color changing ability, but she's completely darling anyway.  Love the crocodile float!  Next up is Spring Song, a lovely G1 sweetheart sister I just love the combination of colors and symbol on.  I'm pretty picky on the ponies I collect, and she's just a wonderful combo.  Super nice shape on her too!  Especially with that earring intact.  Last of the big ponies is ADORABLE Bumblesweet.  Both my partner and I love bees, and she's just utterly perfect, and even has her brush!

Oh but that's not all pony-wise!  Hanna was kind enough to get me some missing bits from a couple play-sets I had as a child.  When I sold off my Barbie related toys I accidentally threw a couple of MLP accessories in that box and I've been dreading it since.  Now restored are the soap dish for the tub and the duck toy for the crib!  Hanna has also correctly inferred I like bee-pony any gen and I now have a keychain of Bumblesweet too!  She's gone right on my keys, I've been needing a little decoration there.

But wait!  One more surprise?  Indeed!  A blindbag too!  I love blindbags.  Lilac joins the crowd!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Thank you thank you thank you Hannah!  I apologize for not getting a lot of separate pictures, Cat and I were just so excited to see everything, we couldn't wait to get it all together!  This has been an absolutely wonderful trade and I completely brightened my day!

I'll be posting individual photos of ponies in the next few days, once I have some light and time to photograph them by themselves!

Pony Corral / Who were your childhood ponies?
« on: April 17, 2015, 02:41:27 PM »
I'd like to know, if you had a childhood collection (or even knew others with collections), which generation of MLP was it for you?

For me G1 was right during my childhood.  SS Truly and Magic Star were a birthday gift to me when I turned two, and I collected ponies from then on right until the end of G1.  When the G2s rolled around I'd grown out of MLP for the time being, I was more into Grand Champion Horses and then various action figures to really take notice.  G3s came around when I was in college, and while I was charmed by the look of them, I didn't have the time, space, or money to invest in them.  While I do enjoy G4 now, I'm really more of a nostalgic and selective collector, outside of my childhood herd I only have a handful ponies I really found outstanding in one way or another to my personal taste.

Here's my childhood 'herd' along with the few 'fakies' (other brands of colorful horses) I had as a child.

Let us know what yours were!  And maybe even how you felt about each generational release based on where you were at the time.

Pony Corral / What to Do With Blossom?
« on: April 04, 2015, 07:36:00 PM »
I recently purchased a small lot of ponies on e-bay, and while I'm sure what to do with the other three (two just needed a good spa, the third needed a spa and a new tail) I'm just not sure what to do with this CF Blossom.  The lot was described as 'bait' but it was definitely a misnomer, none of the ponies were particularly 'baity' by my reckoning, especially for G1s (Sprinkles and Bouquet needed cleaning, Seashell will get a new tail).

Blossom's main issue (apart from the missing tail) is that she does have a slight head-body mismatch.  It's not the worst I've seen, but is readily apparent.  On the plus side, her main is beautiful, soft and silky.  Her symbol is a tiny bit worn on her NDS but her eyes are very nice.  She currently rattles and needs her washer removed, but whatever the case I will be pulling that out.  She still has a bit of ground-in dirt to clean, but I'll get that cleared up in any case.  She seems to have no pindot/smooze, cancer, or marker stains.

My thoughts are thus:

A) Restore: All she needs is a new tail.  She could also have some symbol touch-up, but wouldn't need much.
B) Alternate Rehair/Symbol Recolor: It seems like it would be a shame to cut such a nice mane, but it might make her more interesting to change her colors, perhaps white hair?  Or a mix of White and Dark Purple?
C) Custom: Something more, perhaps like one of my Deco Ponies http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,366834.0.html or another custom of some sort.

The only final caveat is that I have no real intent of keeping her.  I enjoy having the project, but I'm not hugely fond of the collectors pose or her coloration, I prefer to keep my collection to my very very top favorites and childhood ponies, and unfortunately she is neither.

So, what does anyone think I should do with her?  Particularly strong feelings of Restore Vs. Custom?  Some other idea I've not thought of yet?

Here she is before her first round of cleanup:

Price Check Archives / PC on G1 Bubbles
« on: April 01, 2015, 10:37:58 AM »
Just trying to figure out what this pony reasonably goes for.  I'm seeing several Ebay lots at around $20, but that seems sort of high for a pony that's not that rare (I know she's rarer than some, but certainly isn't impossible to find).  I know condition is an issue, but, as with the usual on Ebay, some folk are calming 'mint' when photos show otherwise.  I'm antsy to add her to my collection now that I have Seashell on the way, but if I need to hold out for a better deal I will.  I'm not picky on condition, so if I should wait for a conditional issue pony, I will.

Oh man I'm so excited to present these ponies!  I thought up this project a couple months ago, and it's gotten me back into MLP in a big way.

First, a little background:

I've seen Deco/Decora/Decoden with ponies in it (not generally something I care for), but never with the Pony as the focus.  I thought some ponies decorated up like little cakes would be wonderful (especially since my partner has just started his career as a baker), and I've been having a lot of fun on this project!  These girls are all sweet and cake themed, each done up like an elegant desert with 'whipped' manes and tails as well as other dollops of creme all decorated thematically.

Eyes are Hasbro original, symbols and other details are painted with acrylic paint, details are hand sculpted in polymer clay or made of glass or plastic beads, the 'whipped topping' is piped silicone caulking and has a little bit of 'squish' to the touch.

I hope folks like these!  This is my first shot into customizing, and now that I've finished, these girls need new homes.  Because they are my first try, there are a few things about them that are less than perfect, with their bait bodies some have a nibble here or there, or a mark that was just too stubborn to come off.  I'm still getting the hang of really neat symbols, and the technique of how I'm making these.  Generally their photos will indicate any flaws but I can provide further detail shots if desired.

I'm thinking of asking $25 for each of these ponies (not including shipping), or I'd be happy to trade for something from my wishlist http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,366833.0.html.  I'm open to any reasonable offer though, if something strikes someone's fancy.  If folks like these, I do intend to do more with different themes too!

Without further ado.

Wanted! / Featherwurm's Wishlist
« on: March 09, 2015, 02:38:04 PM »
(Currently buying/trading, I should have a trade list up before long)

I have only done a little buying here, but I've been buying and selling on Ebay and Etsy for years, and have plenty of positive feedback in both places, you can check that out if you like here: https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/Featherwurm/reviews?ref=shop_info and here http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=featherwurm&ftab=AllFeedback.  I'm looking mostly to buy, but I'm game for trades as well, I will have a listing with what I have to offer once I'm able to go through it (it's all G3s right now).  I'm more than ok buying/selling/trading internationally.

I have some missing items from my childhood toys that I would like to replace.  I'm okay with plastic yellowing but would prefer no other damage.  With accessories or not isn't of any particular matter to me.

G1 Playset/Accessories:

- Star Sponge from the Scrub-a-dub Tub
- I could also use a new pink mobile stand for the Sweet Dreams Crib as the pegs on mine are broken (I accidentally broke it as a child).  I suppose it doesn’t have to be a pink one, but I would prefer it.
- Sweetheart Sister Pretty Belle's perfume bottle is VERY low on my priority list, but if the opportunity arises I wouldn't mind replacing it.

Not picky on condition here, so long as the body is intact, if the hair is there I'd rather it is in good shape, but I can re-hair.

G3 Ponies:

- Pumpkin Tart

Again, not picky on the condition of these either.  With or without card is fine by me.  I'm looking for plain colors on all of these, I don't care for glitter or clear ponies.

G4:

- BB Magnet Bolt
- BB Meadow Song
- BB Twilight Sky
- BB Zecora

Non-Pony Things:

- I have no idea if anyone else has these, but I'm collecting the 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' (also marketed as 'Defenders of Berk') Minifigure Series (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTI4MVgxNjAw/z/U74AAOSwY45UT-HW/$_57.JPG).  These are the little 3” 'chibi' figures and I'm missing a couple; Belch and Barf (green or blue), and the Skrill.
- My partner is looking for a Maleficent "Royal Coronation Collector Doll".
- I'm looking for the monster high dolls Finnegan Wake and Catty Noir
- I seem to have started collecting Unicorno figures from Tokidoki; I'd like Electtrico, Sakura, Sirena, Rocky, and Scooter

~~~
Up for Trade:
Nothing right now.
~~~

If on the receiving half of a trade:

- I love sweets and candy, and I'm not picky.  I'm most fond of chocolate related things, especially chocolate and mint or chocolate and orange.  I don't care for sour or spicy things but my partner loves them.  I do also like fruity things, gummy things, novel things, and so on and so forth.
- I like salty snacks too though not as much as sweet.  Again no real preference, though I'm all up for something novel or unusual.
- I don't particularly like strongly scented things - perfumes, essential oils, scented candles or things meant to odorize a room, I think I'm just too sensitive to it.
- I do very much like nice soaps, generally things with mild natural (orange, mint, lavender) or 'locational' (beach, woods, etc.) scents
- Anything for the bath is great quite honestly, I love bath bombs, bubble bath, and bath salts
- I am allergic to wool/lanolin but that's it really
- I have three kitties whom I love dearly
- I very much like dragons and cats
- I love David Bowie, all eras, all albums
- I'm an artist and I love to draw, but I generally don't need a lot of supplies - apart from fancy paper and sketchbooks!
- I collect bones, shells, insects, minerals/gems, and rocks, and anything interesting of those is always welcome too!

13
I really like brightly neon colored ponies, in the G1s they remind me of the fact that they're very much a product of the time period in which they were made (80s and early 90s and it's love of NEON), and anymore they just really seem bright and joyful (granted I'm not as sure which ponies would qualify now, I'm more of a G1 sort)!

So I would love to see some BRIGHT neon colored ponies!  Any generation, original or custom as long as things are bright bright NEON!

Here's my three 'neon' colored girls, Tootie Tails, Half Note, and Swinger:

Introductions / Hello all from a longtime fan but quiet lurker.
« on: February 06, 2015, 11:46:10 AM »
Hi all!

I'm a rather quiet sort who mostly lurks, but I'm happy to introduce myself; I'm an artist and designer (though I work at the big orange box) living in the Pacific Northwest who's been a fan of MLP since I was a very small child of the 80s.  My first ponies were a gift to me when I was two in '86, two so-soft ponies, Truly and Magic Star, who've endured quite a lot of wear.  I still have all of my childhood heard, and while I'm not much of a collector per-se (I try to curb my habits lest I get overwhelmed), I have recently been very much bitten by the desire to customize, and I've been working on some mods I think are very delightful.  I'll have more to post on that matter fairly soon!

I'm a very nostalgic fan of G1; that was my childhood, and a big part of it.  G3s came out when I was in college, and I like their look, but to me if they're baity they're right what I'm looking for for my mods right now.  Sweet and charming, but without the burden of nostalgia.  I quite like G4, and I think it's been a really pleasant revitalization of the brand (though I have mixed feelings on some of the fallout thereof).  I'm just moving into posting from lurking here, this has been a wonderful resource to me in the past (understanding the quality of my childhood bunch of horses, and finding references of how to clean and protect them).  I adore toy restoration in many forms, and for me that is a lot of fun.

I keep an MLP blog https://www.tumblr.com/blog/mlpmemories where I've discussed and photographed my childhood herd, rambled on about toys and my relation to them, and where I post nice photos of the ponies I both keep and intend to modify.  I also have an Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/Featherwurm where I sell a variety of my work (nothing pony-related, presently, but my customs may come up there.)  I do have a website with my art on it, but it is not pony related and I do sometimes post work of a mature theme, so I'm not sure if it is appropriate for me to link it here.  I do like to occasionally draw ponies though (there's some of my work on my blog), and can sometimes be nudged to draw on request in that regard (G-rated, of course)!

Thank you all, I hope to share more ponies soon!
