My Little Pony is joining G.I. Joe and Transformers in The Loyal Subjects Action Vinyls line.
The Loyal Subjects offered a sneak peek of their third Hasbro-licensed line on social media, with photos of four of their upcoming My Little Pony Action Vinyls; Buttons, Applejack, the elusive mail-away Sweet Scoops and Firefly. The Action Vinyls designs are based on Hasbro’s classic MLP ponies and as the photos suggest, unicorns and pegasus ponies are fair game.
The Loyal Subjects didn’t provide release date for the MLP Action Vinyls indicating only that they’re coming soon.

WANT.  DO WANT.

Although isn't that Lickety-Split with purple hair, not Sweet Scoops?  I wonder if "Sweet Scoops" is the official word from the company, or if the company just released the photo and someone else looked up "pony with ice cream on butt" and assumed she was Sweet Scoops.

Anyway, I love these and my most wanted is Firefly.

"Sweet Scoops" has her hair/body colours reversed and Lickety Split's symbol... :haha: I find it funny that no matter how much fan service companies try to give MLP, they still muck something important up. These little vinyls are too cute though, I will probably collect em all when they're up for purchase! It looks like Firefly's wings are poseable too, that would be incredible.

I can't stop freaking out about how Firefly's hair looks JUST like it did in RaMC.

I found the original Facebook post and it doesn't mention the names, so I think it's safe to say that IS Lickety-Split . . . with a dye job??  ;)

Here's the post in case anyone wants to share it!

They are pretty darn cute, a little head heavy but in a charming way. I'll be interested to see what characters they come out with... Though I've no idea how I would buy these, I've never heard of The Loyal Subjects.

Those are, without a doubt, the most horrifying piece of MLP merch i have ever seen. They make fakie firefly and the G3.5's look cute and actually like ponies. What the heck are they? Why are Firefly's wings on upside down? Why do i feel i could legit kill someone if i hit them with one of these things.

Also that's lickety split.....not sweet scoops

These are so cute!  I think I'd like them even better if they weren't poseable as the leg joints are throwning me off.  Even to I will still get them when they are released.  I mean anything even fractionally close to a rerelease of g1 is awesome in my book.

Tehee, a head with legs!  If they release a Minty, I have to have her, but they do look a bit odd. I couldn't decide yet if I like them or not. Like brighteyes said, I'd rather have them without the poseable legs as well. I'm generally not a fan of those, these G1 dancing babies are a no-no for me as well.

I want to like these so much, but...  I hate the jointed limbs, and I hate that the symbols are on their backs.  As well as the molded hair.  So much fail.

That's neat to see new merchandise of G1 ponies after a very long time but why are their heads so oversized? It doesn't look cute/chibi it just looks...off.

i agree with this.  I just am not fond of poseable ponies, the leg joints just get into the way of the aesthetics for me.  I also agree that they are top heavy.  The head is slightly larger than it should be.

However, I will get them.  We must support G1 merch in the hopes that they will work their way into the regular toy line.

The "big heads/squat bodies" thing is just how Loyal Subjects stylizes their vinyls, really.  Look at the G.I. Joe figures (http://database.toywiz.com/index.php?b=GI%20Joe&f=manufacturer&v=The%20Loyal%20Subjects), for example.

I think these gals are super cute; the stylized design suits them, imo! :lovey:

It works with the GI Joes but not so much for the ponies.. I'm worried that unless the tails are heavier than the figures will face plant whatever they are standing on. Hopefully the joints will be sturdy enough too

They are actually really cute there heads are just a little too big. The detail on them is quite good, I hope we get more G1 ponies like blind bags, brushies, and funko.

Maybe somebody should tell them about Sweet Scoops/Lickety Split so they could fix her to be... whichever one and not both? She does bug me, I'd probably still get her but it's not as appealing for me since she's not a real pony.

I will pass on these as I am not a fan of jointed ponies or oversized heads, but they look nice otherwise. There's always a catch to new G1 stuff, isn't there? =P Except the Hallmark ornament - that was beautifully done. Kinda wish other companies would take a cue from them when trying to make G1 stuff.

Showed them to DD and she wants Firefly, Buttons and Scoopity-Split. As long as they don't cost me an arm and a leg I can oblige.

SCOOPITY SPLIT!! LOVE IT! :lmao:

My only concern is that the website shows their other toylines for sale - and their non-blindbox vinyl toys seem to vary from $30-55. Each. :yikes: I love them, and I WANT them ... but my wallet will die!!

I think these are . . . fine, kind of cute . . . Buttons is a rather random choice and I can't approve of the Sweet Scoops / Lickety-Split mash up. Can't that one just be Blossom? Meanwhile change Buttons to Glory or Moondancer. There, I'm happy!

I'm really torn.  It's like buying these will convince Hasbro the old ponies have viability in the modern market.  However, the design is really meh, and I don't like pony articulation.  I guess if I see a Wind Whistler and/or Fizzy I'll buy them.

I saw Gusty, Minty, I think I saw a purple unicorn and  Sundance! I love Sundance!

I'd ask who the purple maned unicorn is, but given Scoopity-Split, they probably mashed another two together. Unless I'm mistaken and that's Blossom.

I'm disappointed so many people are complaining on there (I get it, but I just wish more appreciation would be shown too). I'm always super happy to have anything g1 made, and I think the big head thing fits in with the rest of their line where they kind of caricature figures. I'm going to buy every one I can to support them. Plus, I just personally think they're cute.

They're weird looking, but cute in their own way. I'm honestly surprised at all the complaints, especially since it seems like those of you who love G1 have been waiting for something like this! Although, I suppose I understand if the style isn't your cup of tea. It seems like this company makes a lot of their toys in this style, though.

I think the only thing that's really off are those wings... otherwise, I'll probably pick them up when they're released.

G1 ponies done in Funko's vinyl pony style would be pretty amazing.

Maybe if these do well, other companies will catch on and perhaps ride the G1 hype train.

I'm always super happy to have anything g1 made, and I think the big head thing fits in with the rest of their line where they kind of caricature figures. I'm going to buy every one I can to support them. Plus, I just personally think they're cute.

Ha! I knew it was a  purple Unicorn! Who IS that? Hey is that Snuzzle standing next to Buttons?

Thanks for the photos Ponycake. :)

Come to think of it, I've seen their Transformers in person at Hot Topic and GameStop and frankly, I didn't like those either.

Sundance and Mystery Purple Unicorn are growing on me though.

I checked out their Transformers figures.  At least these ponies aren't half head like the Transformers are.  Though, if the Transformers are anything to go by, the articulation should be really good quality and we'll get their classic backcard stories with them.

I am super excited about them all. Anything G1 related and new is a super huge plus for me!! I wish we could get all those wonderful bits of merchandise the folks overseas get. Love them all!

Firefly
Buttons
Snuzzle
Gusty
Minty
Blossom or Lickety-Split
mystery purple unicorn
Sundance

I think the mystery unicorn is either Princess Sparkle or Glory.

Not sure about them yet...loving the resurrection of G1 but don't like jointed legs - that feature has even put me off several of the G2s.

I suspect I will have to get a an Applejack because, well, I have to have all things AJ (first pony and all that...)  :P

Anyone know if they'll be available in the UK or do you have to get them online?

If it requires importing and extra costs, I'm not really interested. If I found one at a fair or they appeared at a reasonable price in Forbidden Planet I might buy one.

I think they need to decide whether they're making Lickety or Blossom, though, and stick with it.

They aren't mail orders.  :) Someone saw the company's Facebook post (which does not list the ponies' names) and incorrectly assumed that purple-hair Lickety was Sweet Scoops. They only mentioned mail order in conjunction with the (original) Sweet Scoops toy.

I can't wait to see these in person. The proportions looks a little strange from the photos but they probably look better IRL. My favorite part is the way the hair is molded. Each one has their own unique style and personality. :D

I believe the "Mystery Purple Unicorn" is Glory. She has a stripe on her symbol that looks a lot like Glory's and her famous streak of hair. I bet she is tinted purple like Rarity is actually a Grey/Blue color. ;p

I love them all, especially Gusty. I would be SOOOOO happy if they released a Bowtie with the double yellow bows in her hair like in Firefly's adventure. That would be too cute!

Is there any mention of the price point yet? (I hope they're not as expensive or more expensive than the FUNKO ponies.)

need at least one of these.

looking at them they look like old wooden toys or just clunky, its like if MLP went  back in time, this would have been MLP of the 50s   :P  :lookround:
its like the pony that time forgot  ;) which i like being a vintage/antique  collector  :satisfied:

I'll bet Big Bad Toystore (online retailer) will carry them.  If they price them like they do their Transformers 3" Loyal Subjects figures, they'll be $13 for a sealed blind box.  They also sell individual opened figures, which have varying prices based on rarity.

They aren't out yet.  They will be soon.

If they follow the trend of the Transformers figures, there will be a number of regular figures which will be displayed on the box and three mystery figures a wave which are only in silohuette and rarer.  They will be the pony, the ribbons might be an accessory that comes with it.  Also, the Transformers came with a card that had their "Tech Specs" like the backcards of the original toys, so the ponies might also come with a card with their backcard stories as well.  We'll have to see when they actually hit shelves.

Yes. For the record if they are doing this, I'd love to see the Tales group. Especially since we never got Teddy, Lancer and Ace.

If anyone has a specific pony they want, you should let the company know.  Like, leave a message on their Facebook with a link to a picture.  The people producing them probably do not know much about G1 MLP compared to G1 Transformers and G.I. Joe, and are likely mainly going off character templates that Hasbro sent them.  (Which might explain the color inconsistencies, lol.)

You may have noticed that Sundance's ribbon is yellow instead of blue, for example.  All her "retro" appearances show her with a yellow ribbon.  And Gusty with a red ribbon instead of pink, etc.

That said, the pony design does seem to be influenced heavily by RaMC, especially the hair (but also the face design and kind of the legs), which I'm very happy about.  Most retro G1 stuff looks very "G3" to me.

Think these will show up at Hot Topic?

Doubtful. Hot Topic is actively staying away from anything and everything MLP, it seems. They're already saying that they won't be carrying the Funko vinyl ponies anymore. I know, I know- "But G1 isn't G4" well... I'm not expecting HT to care about the difference. Pony is pony, and that's obviously not one of their focuses right now.

I could see these turning up at Barnes & Noble. They seem to be really big into carrying collectible figures and toys these days.

Here is a list of retailers: https://www.theloyalsubjects.com/retailers :)
^^ Also, worth mentioning, if one of those places is a little local place by you-- I'd ask about it. But I assume these will likely be just at the big places (?). I dunno XD I remember labbit being a htf vinyl toy at just little places in '08, but now you can just find him at B&N

I think someone earlier said Hastings might be an option too. They carry lots of collectibles. I hope they do because that's much closer to me than B&N is. As long as I have some way to get them!

I really want to like them.  I wish their heads were a little more proportional. Didn't they have a real G1 on hand to use as a model?

I'm glad so many like them.

They aren't supposed to be in proportion.  They're kind of like chibis except not as extreme. :)

To give an idea, this is one of this company's Transformers figures:

As you can see, the ponies are far less, uh, squat. ;)  Probably because, with their four legs, they already form a "square" that can neatly fit in a little square box.  Unlike a bipedal figure which needs to be "squashed" more.  And also if their head were as big as Starscream's they'd fall on their noses, ha ha.

Not always a fan of the hugely deformed chibi figures, but these look quite cute. I guess it depends if / how much they retail for over here. Some of those tiny blind boxes are £10 each, and if that is the case with these, I might have to give them a miss. The Gusty I would have to pick up for my army, though.

Alot of people just don't like jointed animal toys. It looks fine with humans, humanoid shaped and Transformers but its never really looked very good on animals and not everyone  likes chibi heads.

If they had done them more like the Funko G4 mlps where its all one solid piece, but has the charm and individuality that The Loyal Subjects sculpts do, it would be a bit better received. Plus there are a lot of people in this thread who like these alot. ;)

I've looked through a lot of The Loyal Subjects toys on there store and I've seen them in places like Hot Topic and Barnes n Noble and I really just don't like their squat style period.

My comment is neither awkward nor aggressive.  But I will go find my post where I discussed my thoughts on this:

Ah, here:  http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,376464.0.html

It would probably be impossible for mass production, but I wish Hasbro would take notes from this BJD pony:

http://silverbeam.deviantart.com/art/BJD-Pony-326864272

(Minus the head. It looks too much like the SFM ponies to me and I hate those models)

But that's the kind of jointing I'd like to see. Looks much better.
this is a great example for G4 but it would be hard with G1.  G4 design doesn't fully articulate the joints - it's much more vague.  G1 design definitely tried to make efforts to show the caricature of an equine leg.  You can't do that AND hide the joints very well...

Hmmm do you know I would be more than happy to see G1 ponies again.  That aren't designed by someone else like Funko, WeLoveFine, The Loyal Subjects, etc.  If I had known that the G1 retro re-releases a decade ago would have prompted MORE re-releases, I would have bought dozens of them.  With no "promise" of more from Hasbro, I was pretty disappointed at the pathetic quality and small distribution.  They asked us what we would pay if they did this, we told them, they released them, they sold terribly, they didn't make more.  If at any point Hasbro has said, "This is an experiment for a collector's line of MLP", I wouldn't have complained.  But poor communication on their part led to terrible sales which led to no more G1 ponies being produced.  :(

So sick of everything needing to be designed to look "chibi", "SD" or "anime-stylized".  Move away from this design trend already!

Unfortunately, it seems to be a style that just refuses to die.  As others have said, the more compact design makes for easier packaging.  The Loyal Subjects are also none of their articulated figurines.  They're obviously going to do that here.

The problem is Hasbro isn't releasing anything of its own for G1.  Even their G4 lines are so limited and the distribution is patchy at best.

You rang for SD (me)? Lol, jk

But in all seriousness, this trend will not die out fast so long as there is more demand for it.
While I would love to see G1 again in it's old glory Hasbro will not do it, and it doesn't look like they plan on moving on from G4 style any time soon.

This too. I would like it very much if Hasbro showed its oldest fans a little more love, like they do their oldest TF fans. How many wonderful and improved TF designs have they made while still being retro enough to appeal to nostalgia?

They have been getting better with Retro merch though...overseas anyway.  :(

Hasbro has fed the TF fan beast more consistently over the decades.  Transformers never had a wilderness period like My Little Pony did during the 90's (outside of Europe before any Euro users disagree).  Some who was 2 in 1992 when the line was discontinued in the U.S. was 13 when G3 started.  The highly polarizing and short-lived G2 probably hurt community cohesion more than helped.

Our community is too small for them to care apparently.  Though, if they did care, we would probably see more growth in our community.  Instead, most of their energy goes into bronies who will disappear once this current generation (FiM to be more accurate) ends.

Transformers fans are more willing to spend money, so they get better quality and a wider variety of items.  When Hasbro did that poll during the G3 era, they asked MLP collectors how much they would be willing to pay for a retro G1 pony.  The community collectively said:  $5.  Ridiculously low when you consider that, accounting for inflation, the ORIGINAL G1 ponies actually cost $12 in today's money.  And they were sold in massive batches, whereas collector merchandise is typically priced higher, to make up for having a more specialized and limited audience.

I am honestly surprised we even got the two sets we did.  I do not think we will ever get Hasbro produced retro ponies again.

I hope that, even if the style isn't to your taste, everyone appreciates Loyal Subjects producing G1 merchandise that isn't just clipart slapped on a shirt.  They are taking a risk.

Well... ok, I wasn't a collector when the re-releases were released, but I didn't even find out about them until like what... a week ago, maybe two? I would have bought them for sure, had I known about them. Now they are very high on my "must absolutely have!!!"-list. I'd love to have the experience again of going into a toy store and standing in front of dozens of G1, and having to decide which one(s) to take home. Yes, I occasionally buy G4, and I want to get a few of the smaller playset things of the EG line (if they EVER appear over here, I monthly check two toy stores and it has been ages that I found anything new MLP. They're even lacking blind bags!). But that's nothing compared to how G1 would feel, as this is where my heart lies, and I am sure that's what it is for many of us.

It's a shame Hasbro doesn't give it a real try and tries to catch those that grew up with them, but not actually collect them. That generation is currently heading to toy stores all over the world in search of toys for their own child, I bet you that many a mommy would go "oh, wow, these were like mine back in the days, I'll get my child the new ones... and the old one for me, so we can play together!" Profit for Hasbro, some nice nostalgia for the mommies, fun time with mommy for the kids, and more stuff for us to collect - everyone is happy! Ah well... a girl can dream!

That said, I am planning to get a few of the big headed vinyl ones, but only if they are affordable for us peeps in Europe. I'm definitely not paying what, 15 bucks or more for the pony and then 30 on shipping!

I think we do need to support this.  This could be a gateway to more respect from Hasbro.  They need to see G1 stuff can sell.

That's a good point about TF fans. But in all fairness, G1 and G3 fans are used to ponies being five bucks ^^

I do appreciate it and if its not too expensive I'll buy a few. I do like Sundance and Mystery Purple Unicorn. Perhaps they will look better in person. Perhaps not. There's nothing wrong with them, I just don't like TLS style on any of there figures.

I feel like literally everything g1 since then that wasn't like clothing has been super hated on (although that mini Firefly beast deserves the hate I think lmao). Those Hamilton figurines were (Firefly and Glory), and I admit they were a little weird but I LOVED them and omgggg did it take me FOREVER to find someone to sell me Firefly, it seems like no one bought her so there were really none around to even buy! And that person barely wanted to part with her because she knew there weren't many around. I wasn't collecting when they were out so I had to buy them afterward.

And then those reproduction sets which I was over the moon about when my mom went and bought me both rainbow ponies sets (good mom ty, I was a highschooler without money). I think people did like those little dolly mix ponies...

And I guess those Snowbaby sets were liked except people hated the dolls and collectors complained about the prices.

I get really excited every time we get a new opportunity. I totally get that people are disappointed and that's up to them and I respect that, I'm just marveling at how as a community it seems most of us are always displeased and if we're not we don't want to spend the money. lol

G1 ponies are durable.  Though, no moving/protruding parts is a definite plus.  I think there are some early G4's showing more degradation than even Year 1 ponies out there.

And, unfortunately, any retro set would probably be made the same way G4 is made.  Substandard materials and shoddy quality control.

This was my thinking at the time, and in a way still is.  I could buy an original in good condition for the same or less than new in the store.  And as a collector, why would I buy a lower quality" retro" version when I could get the real thing for the same price?  (I did in fact buy the year 1 ponies because I didn't have most of them at the time, but I skipped the rainbow ponies.). This is why I have always said they should have made them in alternate poses or used more sought after ponies like Mimic or mail order ponies instead of some of the most common ponies of the generation.

This is why I am a supporter of the idea of g1 to G4 toys.  Remakes of the originals would be a hard sell if they aren't done just right and would only appeal to us collectors.   But I think g1 characters as G4 toys would fly off the shelves.

I wouldn't want them. They'd lack the beauty and I'm not fond of those unhorselike heads and bird beaks. -_-

Why did fans say $5?  They never considered inflation and the fact it was going to be a limited release?

IIRC, a lot of people said "If I can buy a brand new G3 for $5, I should be able to buy a new G1 for $5" and also "I can get a good condition Cotton Candy for $5, so why should I pay more than that."  If you poke through the MLP Arena archives you may be able to find the original thread with a link to the poll (which is obviously long gone now) and people talking about it.

Though, I think we had a discussion that people think it is more acceptable to splurge on "boy" collectibles than "girl" collectibles.  Double standards for the win!

I think what really sunk the remakes was that it was big 3 packs. They actually made the same mistake with SSC for their 30th. You know what the Bridge Direct did for SSCs 35th since they have the rights to SSC now? They released original Strawberry individually in a box that was a replica of the original packaging. If Hasbro had released the repros individually in an exact replica of the original packaging. Collectors want the original packaging not something that just looks retro. I think people would have been willing to pay even $8 for a repro Cotton Candy in a replica of the original packaging. And maybe it would have taken off well enough to be a regular thing and there would be plenty of available G1 style baits as well.

I'm not a supporter of G1 to G4 toys, for a few reasons. We would never get actual TEs is one of those reasons. The best we would get is Faceted painted eyes on the G4. We would never get a true TAF pony, Hasbro only seems to want the symbol on one side. Quality would not be good, G4 quality in various ways has went down hill with various ponies. Flutter ponies would not be the same if they were made, G4 wing gimmicks do not really look right imo and would not translate for G1 flutter ponies.

Pretty much they would only stick to the basic earth, unicorn, and pegasus ponies from G1 who didn't have any special needed to be done to them (like TEs). The designs for G4 just doesn't fit with G1s to me. If any hasbro reps have been to the Pony Fairs during G4 they would have seen G1 to G4 customs by now and might get some ideas, but they haven't seemed to even bat an eyelash.

I think it's good that at least someone is throwing G1 lovers a bone. I have to wonder what the original creator of G1 would think of these :) I think she would have liked them for what they are and that at least some one is -trying-.

The problem is probably the marketing department in terms of them acting on G1 to G4.  The marketing department seems to think that only the Mane 6 and the token "New" pony sell.  That is why we're only getting 8 or so ponies a set anymore (six of them being the Mane 6).  They see collectors buying the customs, but can't visualize a child picking up a G1-based pony from the store.  Shortsightedness on their part.

And the fact G4 would take any of the variations of G1 well is a problem.  You're right that so many of the kinds would either not be done right if at all.  They would probably just do the basic ponies and so softs minus the flocking.

Frankly, the main line needs an overhaul.  They need to go back to looking more like ponies.  Perhaps take the original G1 designs and scale them down to playful size.

And looking at these ponies, they're better than the articulated ponies Hasbro is putting out themselves.  They don't look like demented marionettes.

These are jointed though, aren't they? So even if there were quality issues (and since they're not released yet, how would we know at this point?) they're clearly a different product.  Maybe it's because I'm more of an action figure collector (and I like the Loyal Subjects Transformers figures), but I've never thought it was strange to have dozens of different versions of a character on the market at the same time, so I don't see why having the originals on the market at the same time would mean a new jointed version of a pony would be a hard sell (in a market sense rather than an individual one, obviously no one toy is going to appeal to every collector as individuals).

Personally, it's not about the durability of the original toys (although it's true that my Transformers from the 80s are trashed while my ponies are still in good condition), because they action vinyls are such a different product.  So personally I really like the idea of them, and if they made one of a character that interested me I'd totally pick it up. That said, since the four we've seen aren't Surprise or Snuzzle (my interest list is short  :P), I won't be picking them up - but if they expand the line to include those characters I'd totally be purchasing them.

It was probably to keep production costs down.  Three ponies in one package is cheaper to make than three ponies in three packages.  But I agree it made for unwieldy display.  The art on the back was genuine G1, though--it was from the brochure for the collector ponies, the birthflower ponies, and Satin 'n Lace (first version).

But my point is we aren't getting those things now.  So what if we wouldn't get true twinkle eyes or flutters?  At this point we aren't going to get them in their original form regardless.  And if there is anything that the retro ponies proved its that the quality is not going to be like the original g1 either even if it is in a similar mold.

And if Hasbro did G1-G4 that doesn't preclude them or other licensees from doing retro versions if they wanted to.

In my observations genuine G1 art doesn't tick the same nostalgia buttons that accurate packaging does. Also making them singly packed makes them more attractive to regular buyers. There were plenty of people who bought the 35th anniversary SSC repro who weren't collectors. The big 3 packs tend to only be bought by collectors.

Still think it is silly to sound angry over a sideline of toys. People want G1 to get some love but i never see no complaints when the line actually does get some love. The quality is too bad, the art is too G3, the heads are too big, they don't look like a full blown copy of the original....
People don't seem to get that it is pretty much a wonder these are getting made in the first place.

I personally don't care about the packaging. It goes into the recycling bin with me. These are Retro toys,  not the real deal.

Perhaps pony clothing can help disguise the joints? Dye shouldn't bleed into the plastic of these new ones.

I'd never considered that.  It would be really really cute if they could fit G1 clothing, though I kind of get the impression they are small.  Does anyone know what size the toys made by Loyal Subjects typically are?  Maybe they will fit G1 baby clothes (^_^)

I went to Hot Topic the other day on my way to running another errand and if they are as big as the TFs, then they'd be about three inches.  Failing that craftsy people could make them something. Even something  simple such as a cloth cape or felt "leg warmers" with Velcro. I make simple stable blankets and leg wraps for my model horses using felt with designs. Would hide the leg joints and add a special touch of the 80s while on display.

They look odd from the 3/4 view, but look better from the side. If they make Lofty or any of the TEs I might have to cave in.

I actually don't think the Hamilton figures looked that bad actually. The tiny Firefly with the book was awful though, like super fakie looking. I can't believe that company is doing Glory... no thanks!

Since I'm a huge fan of drawing G1 to G4. I feel need to defend it as a concept. I would love, love, love G1 ponies in the G4 style. I think they'd transition just fine. While TAFs would be difficult to pull off due to the size, I think the TEs and So Softs can get away without the jewel eyes and the flocking.

I think these posable vinyls are the best attempt at retro G1 merch yet. I think add more favorites besides Firefly, Glory (that purple-ish unicorn is supposed to be her I think???), and Minty would help a lot. Buttons is a super cool addition though!

You'd probably have to wait until someone buys the whole set and posts the codes, or fund opened toys that people have bought if they're blind box. Hopefully they won't be.

Toy Fair Update

Greetings all! I just saw these figures up close and personal this morning and took a bunch of pictures (which I will try to upload at a later time). But they are pretty cute in person. They photograph better from some angles more than others. Here are some things I learned.
-The figures we have seen are hand painted prototypes so are not an exact representation of production.
- They are smaller than G1 ponies but not by much (bigger than baby g1 and g4 adults)
-It appears the bows might be removable (they were little pegs) but it was hard to tell on the prototypes.
-Symbols are on one side only.
- Approximate retail (if I can read my notes) is about $15.
- Estimated spring arrival
- Didnt disclose mass market retailers yet but should be similar to other brands
-Wasn't able to ask if they were blind bags or not but the other toys in the booth were a mix (some open packages some blind bags)

That said...

So these are collectibles aimed at g1 fans and they only have symbols on one side?  Major fail!

I sincerely hope that these are not blind boxes because I most definitely will not be purchasing them then.  I can see spending $3 on an item sight unseen but not $15!

That had me rolling my eyes too, but remember the joints get in the way and we haven't had ponies with symbols on both sides in over ten years. So they may not know any better. On the other hand a little research could do wonders.

Yes, the purple unicorn with the purple and blue hair is Glory. The purple is lighter than it appears but again these were I believe colored prototypes so they may change.

Thank you soooo much! I think they're adorable and still plan to buy them all. I was scared they'd be $25 a piece, $15 isn't so bad.

You're welcome ^.^ I just hope the price I was given when I asked for retail was correct and it wasn't mistakenly their wholesale. Regardless, I need all of these. The variation of hair is my favorite part. So cute

I don't mind that they only have the symbol on one side. From an artist stand point it's hard to get identical symbols on both sides of a pony, however, in a factory it's not really that tricky.

One of my thoughts as well. It almost seemed like the body was modeled after an original pose collector pony (where the head is slightly larger and hanging down). If I am not mistaken they all use the same body mold so it makes sense

So... Glory's the wrong color. Lickety Split is the wrong color. They are single sided. And are going to cost $15? It's going to be a toss up as to how much I support this line. I may buy them. But obviously I'm going to need to customize them to fix their colors and symbols. And they have excluded Moondancer, who is my favorite. But that may be for the best, since they can't seem to get the colors right.

I guess for the most part, I like them.

Well thankfully these are not the final productions, and depending on how well they do they may had more characters. I do wonder how they chose the ponies though XD Some are obviously fan favorites like Snuzzle and Gusty

Interesting how big they are, I sort of assumed they'd be G4 brushable size.

That's how The Loyal Subjects does things.

I would suggest taking these thoughts to them on social media.  These are hand painted prototypes, not what will hit the store shelves.  We should tell them we want double sided symbols and certain ponies need to have their colors corrected (though some of their Transformers figures are also colored wrong).

Here's something to consider.  When they made Rumble, they made him with working hammer arms.  If they made flutter ponies, would they give them working wings?

Someone will find all the codes.

Thinking of more characters: What about non-pony characters?  Sledge and G'Nash look like they were designed by The Loyal Subjects.  Perhaps have them as mystery characters.

**More Information

I went back and talked to them today and brought some of your questions.

-Figures are blind boxed
-There are not yet revealed special chase figures
- if you purchase a case you should be able to get all the figures (16 to a case)
- Will be sold through the usual retailers such as Target, Hot Topic and Barns and Noble
- The characters that were chosen were popular in the universe and picked based on the stories they can tell and their unique character statements
- There will be more, support the release
- The choice to make them articulated is for play and to tell stories (pose and photograph them etc)
- July 1st is approximate release (not spring)
- Colors and hair shapes are not final at all..,, they are still working on the pieces
they want to make collectors happy so please let them know ^,^

Also would you be able to get some better pics of the Equestria Girls dolls? Everyone is raking pics from the same angles that are obscuring some of the dolls in the back.

Haha thanks, it's sorta Pashmina! At least it's modeled after her and her scarf, just painted differently :)

I sure hope they adjust the colors for the ponies, though. It'd be nice to have a white Glory! Though I would still like purple Glory, she could chill with the green-scarfed hamster lol.

Chase figures are like the funko glitter ponies, or the mystery mini store exclusives it's basically one that not as many are made or are limited figures and are harder to find.

Basically its called a "chase figure" because its a chase to get them because they are hard to find.

If Big Bad Toy Store carries these, they usually have two options:  you can buy unopened blind boxes from them where you don't know what figure you'll get, OR you can buy specific characters where they've opened them to take a peek inside.

However, if you opt for the "buy specific characters" route the commons will cost a few dollars extra and the chase figures will cost quite a lot extra.

I figure I'll buy about three or four blind boxes, hoping I don't get duplicates, then buy the specific ponies I still need.

Hmm, I suspected that after noticing Princess Sparkle on one of my retro cups.  I suspect that they didn't specifically choose these characters after all.  They just used the characters that Hasbro has already been using in its retro merch.  With the exception of Sweet Scoops/Lickety Split.

I agree, these are the characters turning up on a lot of retro merchandise.  Hasbro probably sends clipart of them to all its licensees.

Foxtale did say they were open to making more waves, so people should email them and let them know their favorite ponies, with a link to their My Little Wiki entry. :)

Or maybe Princess Sparkle love is just affected by the OC tv series

Love her, she's one of my childhood ponies, I had a very small heard back then because we could't afford to buy  more than a couple toys in a year, she came from the flea shop, so I'm really happy to see her in march

I think for Glory at least it's probably from the clip art Hasbro sends out.  Much the same way that Rarity sometimes ends up grey on merchandise.

And now I can also see how the toy designs have been affected by that retro clip art.  The hair is very similar.

I bet this means one of the chase figures will be Starshine.  She is used too frequently on retro merch for her to be left out.

I think they looked at the cartoons for the hair.  I can definitely see a difference between the fairly detailed bobs of Firefly and Applejack, who were in RaMC, versus the more marshmallowy hair of the ponies who were never in any cartoons (like Snuzzle).  Sundance's hair is also very much like it was in Escape from Katrina.

Applejack also has her freckles on her upper cheeks, right under her eyes, which is where she had them in Rescue at Midnight Castle.

I agree, these are the characters turning up on a lot of retro merchandise.  Hasbro probably sends clipart of them to all its licensees.

Foxtale did say they were open to making more waves, so people should email them and let them know their favorite ponies, with a link to their My Little Wiki entry. :)

He did say they were planning to make more waves. He was really into convincing Hasbro that G1 Ponies are important to us and we want more merch. :D

I know there are clear pictures out there but I forgot to post the full list of characters to avoid confusion (based on their symbols):

Applejack
Sundance
Lickety Split
Snuzzle
Gusty
Glory
Firefly
Minty
Princess Sparkle
**Mystery Chase Figure

I still want a Bowtie in the next wave. ;p

*shrugs*. It's baffling how Rarity keeps ending up grey, sometimes really dark grey,  and yet it keeps happening.
I think she ended up grey because on the show she has a slight tint of grey.. I guess because of the eyes since there is no bottom line on the eyes of most of the characters

I wonder if they could be convinced G1 written media (comics and light novels) would not only appease the fans and collectors, but grab the interest of more potential customers.  Really, the G1 ponies are a well Hasbro so needs to tap, as I think they would sell to both the collectors and little kids.

I think I will just buy one to support the concept ... (Still think they are weird looking). And cross my fingers and toes that cooler ponies are released later. My favorite ponies have always been later years.

Can you imagine brightglow? *melt*

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but I'll say it anyways. I've seen a lot of MLP 'fans' hate G1. I look at pictures of G1 ponies and art on Deviant-art, the comments are usually full of hatred and ignorance. They seem to forget no G1, no MLP.

What about asking for International Exclusives? Think big guys. We could finally buy an entire set of Mountain Boys or Seaside Babies or Roller Skating Ponies or Nightlight and Raindrop without selling several organs on the black market!

I thought about mentioning Mountain boys when I posted on their Facebook page but I was worried that a long list of things might detract from the more immediate concerns like the symbols or fixing colors.

Definitely, if it looks like there will be a second wave, we should mention our favorites.  I'd like to see the TAF babies, too.  That could turn out even cuter than the adults.

I was being mildly sarcastic with the last part of what I said. I do know why but I didn't want to directly say it as my point was kind of obvious.. well I don't know how obvious but my friend got it pretty well.

Anyway, I submitted an email to them about the G1 figures mostly about the two who were the wrong color. But also added my two cents on who I think fans would like to see (which yes I did say Big Brother ponies and on TAF pony)

Hey guys, I got a reply from TLS a few days after I sent them a private message on Facebook. I was mostly saying what others here were saying about design issues and also being blind boxed. I suggested doing packaging similar to the re-release collector ponies.
Here's their reply:

"Thanks for contacting!  With regard to the ponies shown at NYTF, these were just paint samples.  We're still in design mode, so trust that many of your suggestions will be addressed.

Also, we're not married to packaging--just making great product.  MLP Wave 1 will indeed be a blind boxed figure, but we may offer them within window packaging as well.  We've done so with all other lines in the past.

Thanks again for the support, and I hope we can continue to earn it.

Wishing you all the best,
TLS"

I've asked them about online and EU retail availability via FB, and got a reply yesterday:

"Hello Lea,
Thanks for contacting, and expressing interest in our upcoming MLP line.  The figures are not up for sale quite yet, but should be sometime this Summer.  Once available - you'll definitely be able to purchase online, but please stay tuned for more release information.
We appreciate the support, and do hope we can continue to earn it!
All the best,

Thanks for contacting, and bringing this to my attention.  Although I personally am not on the design team, I can definitely forward your notes.

I do hope we can look forward to your support in the future.

They're a small company, so I think it's easier to get messages to the designers than with a large company like Hasbro.

I was not a fan of the initial images at all but Foxtale's pictures really made me love them! Plus, even though I know they are a commercial company out to make money, I like a company that tries to listen!

I may not completely buy the reason for the line up...any one notice its the exact same as the dollymix ponies? If the chase figure is Mainsail or Powder I will giggle :P I am thinking more that this is a first license pack.

I feel the same way. I think the heads are too big in comparison to the bodies or something? They are super cute and I NEED that "Sweet Scoops" aka Lickety Split in my life. But something about the proportions DOES seem a bit off....

I was looking at their other mini-figure sets, because whatever they do for Transformers, TMNT, etc, will probably be the same as they do for MLP.

From what I can tell, a set usually has 8 common figures and up to 3 chase figures (i.e. rare figures), and the typical case will have two of each common.  (A case has a total of 16 blind boxes in it.)  This seems to be pre-set, not random--like, even if Donatello and Rafael have the same level of rarity, you aren't going to get a case with 4 Donatellos and zero Rafaels.

BUT sometimes a common figure is switched out for a chase figure, and that part IS randomized.  It is pure chance whether a case you order has a chase figure or not.

They often have three chase figures per set, with the odds of getting them being 1-in-16, 1-in-24, and 1-in-96.  Whether they're doing this for MLP is uncertain, because from what Foxtale said it sounded like there might be only one chase figure?

Also, we have seen 9 figures to date.  If we assume that The Loyal Subjects are following their usual set-up of having 8 commons, one of the ponies we've already seen may be a chase figure.

Who I think will be Commons
Gusty

Purple Glory
Lickety-split
Minty
Firefly

I think the Chase figure will either be
Princess Sparkle or
Snuzzle

Well, it could be Birthflower pony Rose, she's another one who gets tons of retro stuff.  :P  But I'd much prefer Starshine.

Someone's childhood favorite must have been Rose.  I'll bet all the other birthflowers are jealous.

Probably due to still working out the kinks and all, since what was shown at the fair was more or less prototypes
