Title: Got a Question for Hasbro? Ask it here! (x-posted from Fair board)
Post by: SweetTune on June 14, 2012, 06:49:00 AM
It's that time again where we gather questions for the Hasbro Q&A session at the MY LITTLE PONY Fair! You know you've got that burning question that you'd love to have answered so ask away! Even if you aren't going to the Fair this year, you can still join in on the fun. Post your questions below between now and midnight on Sunday June 17th so we can send them to Hasbro. :)

Here's a question that has been on my mind: Will we ever see G4 Minty as a regular release. The few that showed up online were so cute. I want one!

It'll be nice if Hasbro can give us a hint on whether G1-G4 ponies will ever be possible.

Can we have a special set dedicated to G3-G4 releases. We already have Skywishes, it'll be nice if they are more consolidated and widely released. I'd love to see ponies like Seaspray, Gardenia Glow, Winter Snow, Spring Fever, Winterberry...etc

Can we have symbols on both sides of the ponies?

What othe gimmicky stuff can we expect to see on the G4s other than light-ups and poseable limbs? Those are kind of gaudily done, but I miss some of the G2 Magic Motion stuff like the ability to swish the tail when you turn the head.

Ok nerdy question time:

1. On the bottom of a G4 pony's foot, there is usually at least one number printed in black ink. What do these numbers mean?

2. On a G4 pony's head, under the hair, there is are letter(s) and number(s) stamped into the plastic. What do these numbers mean?

1) Are there any plans for more retro releases for the 30th Anniversary of MLP?

2)  Why use the term "cutie mark" instead of symbol? Why are they only one side of the pony's body?

3) (My oldest son wants to ask) "Why do the princess ponies have hair that always moves? Does that mean they are supposed to be prettier than the other ponies?"

Along those lines, are there any plans to update any of a previous generation's Pegasus Ponies into Generation 4?  So far G4 pegasi have mostly been old Earth Ponies given wings, plus a few originals.

I've got some questions to ask, so I'll shoot.

Can we expect better quality control in the future? Having mis-matched heads and bodies, chunks of dried glue on my ponies, dirt/smudges that will often refuse to come off, and dents from the packaging really make me sad. :[

Will we ever be getting more show-accurate toys or plushies?

Can we get more info, possibly a clearer gauge of the release, for the Toys "R" Us collectors set? (Vinyl, Nightmare Moon, Trixie.)

What exactly are the legal/trademark issues that prevent Hasbro from using G1 MLP names?

I'm curious to know what their official stance is on customs, plushies and customized items or merch made with their trademarked characters.  They're all over on ebay and private forums for sale, but I've only heard of one instance where a cease and desist was sent.  Is there some kind of rule against using the names, likenesses, artwork, or do they not care?

Oh oh oh new question, this is cartoon related!

In FiM, are unicorns the only practisioners of magic or can the other breeds pick up magic as well?

Where do pega-unis like Celestia come from? What's their history? Do they share the same ancestry with Mimic and wear the four golden horseshoes?

Hasbro employees do not work on the show, so they can't accurately answer show-related questions.   Regular fans know more about Friendship is Magic than Hasbro reps.   Last year, a fair attendee asked a Hasbro rep why Pinkie Pie was packaged with a mouse instead of Gummy the alligator.  The rep. responded that she had no idea that Pinkie Pie had a pet alligator.

2. On a G4 pony's head, under the hair, there is are letter(s) and number(s) stamped into the plastic. What do these numbers mean?
The letter usually stands for the name of the pony that that particular head mold is based on.  For example, Rarity and Dewdrop Dazzle have "R"s on their heads.  Twilight and Lulu Luck have "T"s on their heads, Applejack and Feathermay have "AJ"s on their heads, and Applebloom and Scootaloo have "SC" (for Scootaloo, I'm guessing) on their heads, etc.  I'm not sure about the numbers though.  Some of the ponies  have numbers and some don't!

Can we expect better quality control in the future? Having mis-matched heads and bodies, chunks of dried glue on my ponies, dirt/smudges that will often refuse to come off, and dents from the packaging really make me sad. :[

Very much this!!!  The poor quality of the G4 line is extremely upsetting to me.

Any chance for more brush-able boy releases after Shining Armor?  :)

Oh yes, I want to know that too!  Here's hoping!

I second your first question. They really should do something special for their 30th anniversary. Maybe they could rerelease the G1 ponies that inspired the FiM ponies (surprise, twilight, sparkler, etc) or maybe they could do the FiM ponies in the style of G1's! I hope they answer this!

I would like to know where the sellers who list unrealeased ponies on TaoBao are obtaining their stock--whether it is usually through illicit means (theft from the factory) or not. Especially when the numbers are large enough that it seems unlikely they could have been stolen (like the 100 :muffin: Ponies that became available right before the official announcement that she was the fair/SDCC pony).

Great questions! I would love to know how many "new" brushable ponies they expect to release this year and even next year...i.e. so far we have Heartstrings, Trixie, Cherry Berry, Sunny Rays and Flower Wishes & Vinyl...surely there must be more than 6 in 12 months! Please HB?

Will we ever be getting more show-accurate toys or plushies?

I just need to ask but what makes you feel the toys are so very not show-accurate? The plush i can very well understand but the toys are really not bad at all. (Apart from the obvious things like pink Celestia)

My questions would be:
- Will we be getting more plush ponies?
- Is there any chance we will be seeing a new pony specie in the near-future? (like sea ponies)
- Will there be new poses?
- Will there be new art ponies (doesn't matter if they are G3 or G4)?
- Any chance we will be seeing "kid" ponies with cutie marks?

I have some. I was wondering how is it decided which ponies will be international exclusives? Like Star Swirl, Rainbow Flash, Skywishes, etc. Are there plans to bring any of those to the US like Daisy Dreams will be? Will there be more International exclusives in the future?

Also, was Sweetie Blue cancelled because they went with Cupcake instead? (similar symbols, lol)

I mean as in, maybe some with pre-done hair that looks like it does in the show, maybe even more plastic molded hair.

Having to style everything can be quite tedious, especially if styling isn't your cup of tea.

Well, even with the blindbags there are some... inaccurate things. (No Fluttershy mold. :P)

The new sets though, are pretty great looking. Although the re-use of the same molds of RD, AJ, and TS are a bit disappointing. But I guess that's to be expected, given they've used the same molds for what... five waves of blindbags?

My Little Pony is all about brushing and styling hair.  Um... they're equine animals.  That's how you "care" for them, which is supposed to mimic what you would do in real life, if you owned a colorful herd of equines.    Since they aren't capable of being exercised (most NOT being mechanical), the only other major aspect of horse-play (ahahahaha) IS brushing and styling them.  Taking that away turns them into another piece of plastic that simply takes up display room.

<---- Not a fan of molded hair!!

Question for Hasbro:  Will the Collector's Line continue to have two exclusives a year, or can we expect to only see one pony in consecutive years, like this year?

While I understand where you're coming from, there are others like me who would prefer the molded hair and such, haha. It's more of a thing the newer-generation of fans are interested in, from what I can tell. (Which I  happen to be, hehe.)

I know that if they made some sort of a molded line that appealed to the people that are only really interested in FiM, it'd be a good money-maker for them. Not to say I would stop buying brushables if they did, I'm perfectly fine with brushables.

As Big Mac would say: YEP.
And I'm not a fan of molded hair either.

I think someone else has already posted this question so I will second it, what is the deal with Hasbro only putting the symbol on one side instead of both sides? I'm not fond of the one side so I'd really like to know why?

i was kinda crushed when they gave us a little taste then stopped again before it got to the 'good stuff'

- Any plans for future boy ponies? And if so, will they all have troll hair?

- Will there be some sort of recognition for 30 year anniversary?

- Will the blind bags have brushable versions?

- Has Hasbro thought about G1/G3 to G4 ponies?

I second the question about art ponies.  Would Hasbro ever be willing to release a special line of art/retro ponies and sell them on their website?  That way collectors could all have (more or less) the same chance of getting them but Hasbro wouldn't have to worry about losing money if enough aren't sold in stores.

My questions...

Why doesn't fluttershy have her own blind bag mold, and will she ever get one?

Will you ever remake sea ponies?

Will you make plushies ever? (show accurate, no plastic heads!)

More boy ponies please! (big Mac, Braeburn, etc)

Please do a retro release for your anniversary!

While I love the brushables and don't see them going away ever, I also like the idea of completing the molded hair set with molded hair Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity.  It just seems a little odd to have molded hair Twilight, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, and Celestia but not the rest of the main 6!

I remember that one of the questions  from last year's Q&A was if we would eventually see Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Rarity released with molded hair.  The Hasbro rep said the molded hair set did well in terms of sales, but that the brushables have done better.  I'm pretty sure that means that they had no plans of releasing the rest of the main 6 with molded hair.

However, Hasbro is paying increasing amounts of attention to the fans of FiM, so who knows!  Maybe another molded hair pony set could be made as part of their new "collector's" line! I'd love to have a complete set, especially if the rest of the main 6 came with their own molded hair princess.  Molded hair Luna would be amazing!  Anyway, asking about the molded hair set is a good idea, because that will show Hasbro that pony fans are interested in one!

Will G4 Minty ever appear?

Will Hasbro ever make G4 ponies based off G1 ponies (like Applejack was), or at least "inspired by" G1 ponies?

Any plans for new "regular" pony molds / poses for brushable ponies?  Sitting ponies, trotting ponies, rearing ponies, etc?

In FiM, the ponies have their cutie marks on both sides. G3-g4 toys have always had them on one side, so I guess they want to continue that because it's cheaper. Also in the g3 cartoons they had the cutie marks on both sides.

If they have any plans to address the issues with quality control and the head/body colors being so mismatched.
And if we can expect any more art ponies, even if they are in the G4 molds.

I Third this question! I am wanting to know this too, it is so important :tellme:

My question to Hasbro: Why is it that Singapore is receiving stuff that isn't showing up in Malaysia or the rest of the world yet?

Hey, I want to ask that question when Malaysia gets things we don't have in Singapore! It's WARRRR neighbour!!!!! lol Malaysia always gets more varieties than us, and we're like your rubbish bin, whatever you can't sell ends up in our stores as well (not that I'll complain), it's easy to tell - there's a Hasbro Malaysia sticker on the ponies, and I know because I go into Johor Bahru to shop for ponies all the time. Sometimes the same ponies just sit on the rack for months in JB and suddenly they appear in Singapore with the Malaysian sticker on the back. :D I guess that means we have better sales volume since we can clear our ponies and ones passed over from Malaysia as well. lol Plus, our ponies are more expensive, so you can say Hasbro can see where the money is. You are always welcome to visit Singapore, the SG Pony Posse will take you out pony shopping!

This.  I'd even settle for G4 incarnations of G1 characters.  I'm rooting for the ponies from Rescue at Midnight Castle or the TAF ponies.

HUGE HUGE HUGE support for this!!!!!! Love LadyMoondancer's suggestion to paint symbols on BOTH sides.

- Will there be some sort of recognition for 30 year anniversary?

Considering  how they killed the Collector's Ponies and Rainbow Ponies in 2008 with the 25th Anniversary collection, I'm kind of afraid of what I'll see if Hasbro does say yes for the 30th Anniversary. Everything was just badly and cheaply done. I don't know, I just don't trust Hasbro anymore.

I won't be disappointed or surprised. This is not the first time Hasbro acted that way.

G1s! I want to know MORE about them. I've been collecting since 1987. And I want to know more about them! Any info. But I also want to know how they can license pictures of G1 ponies or artwork, re-use some names and even release g1 sets (Retro sets) but still have lost the copy rights...

More G4 boys in brushables?

Blind bags into brushables?

Sea ponies?

I also second the Taboa question!

What I'm curious about the most...

Quality control related:
-Is Hasbro aware of head/body mismatch that especially plagues purpley-pink ponies? Littlest Pet Shop uses similar plastic to G4 MLPs (matte hollow head, shiny solid body), but they don't have this problem - why?

-The DVDs they include with the singles obscure the body of the pony so it's much harder to notice common flaws like dirt smudges and scratched paint. While you shouldn't have to worry about flaws in the first place, the DVD placement makes it worse. Not to mention that having a DVD in front of a pony would make it less noticeable. Have they considered putting the DVDs behind the pony?

Pony release related:
-Minty! Is she ever going to be officially released, and was her absence related to the lack of any Christmas-themed ponies in G4?

-Do they plan on making a wider variety of plush?

That's all I can think of for now :3

1. Will hasbro reduce the amount of plastic in pony packaging? I feel like with every pony I buy I end up throwing away the same amount of plastic from packaging waste.

2. Will there be exclusives targeted towards collectors and not bronies?! For example many would love more gen1-gen4 ponies (or even ponies in gen1 mold!) or even art ponies like in gen3.

Well, you guys did get some stuff ahead of us :P As I said, we never received FS Applejack and they're only going to release the Talking Cadence and Wedding Castle in Malaysia sometimes next week >.< . And Lyra, Trixie, Cherry and Sunny are still scheduled for August for us >.<

And they say that the FS Celestia and Luna are already out, but I'm not seeing them anywhere. Just came back from scouring TRU IPC and Metrojaya The Curve >.<

(I got my aunt to talk to a Hasbro Malaysia rep. That's what they told her. Tho they also told her that they're gonna get FS AJ on the next wave after FS Celestia and Luna).

I guess Hasbro Malaysia/Singapore is like that :/ Have the stuff split 50-50.

As for heading down to Singapore, it's a no-go. I suddenly made an impromptu decision to drive down to Singapore last December to catch a Care Bears Live show at Suntec City on the same day. My mom shot the idea down and warned me that she'll ban me from taking her car ever again if I do try to drive to Singapore. Accommodation wasn't a problem, I have relatives there. The problem is, it's a 350KM drive, and she said Singaporean traffic can be very difficult to drive in compared to Malaysian traffic.

In any case, I apologize if I offended Singaporeans. I take it back and would accept whatever punishment the mods of this board feel is right for me. The comment was made at a time when I was feeling a bit frustrated.

There are some really obvious items in the TV show that have never been made as toys, ala Princess Celestia's carriage. Surely this is a perfect girly item that could compete with say a Disney Cinderella princess carriage. Why are toys like this not created and then we get something like an Apple Jack farm truck instead, which is neither in the show, or a particularly girly Toy Item?

The characters in the show have extremely clear differentiated personalities. Ie. Rarity is a fashion designer, with a cat Opal, and she likes going to the Spa. Why are there no MLP toys that put Rarity in a play set that reflects what she is all about? Ie. Rarities carousel boutique doesn't really count in my eyes... It is a fairground attraction that has nothing to do with Rarity, sticking the word Boutique in the product title doesn't make it a fashion shop.

Will they please make some unicorns with round eyes, like most of the unicorns have in the show... It is pretty much only Rarity and Twilight Sparkle who have Diva shaped eyes in the show, but all the toy unicorns have them! (ps round eyes are cuter Hasbro! :) )

I think it has to do with Rarity's original occupation (Lauren Faust said that Rarity was planned to be a merry-go-round/shop owner)? Still doesn't quite explain the current lack of a spa or clothing shop set, but...

This!  I'm glad that the relationship between Hasbro and the collectors is still growing.  We worked really hard a few years back to get more attention put toward the collecting community and Hasbro has definitely stepped up.  I understand that FIM is basically the whole line right now, but what about the relations that had been formed before FIM for collectors of previous generations?  Is anything collector related only going to be focused on FIM fans now?  They did an awesome job with the G1 sets when we were in the midst of G3.  Do they have any plans for the multi gen collectors anymore?

Just seconding a few questions:

* Please, may we have some brushable male/colt ponies?  Even if they don't have flowing manes & tails, they would be wonderful adds to the line (and hey, every Barbie needs her Ken, riiiight?)

* And speaking of brushables, may we please have them with bangs?  They just don't look quite right without.

* Can you bring back Pony Points?  I remember the thrill of sending away fro Baby Ember when I was younger... it was magic!

* Could you please bring out more FiM show-based ponies?  I'm really hoping for Flim & Flam, but any would be wonderfull: the Cake family, Wonderbolts, Diamond Tiara & Silver Spoon, Snips & Snails, Rarity's parents, all the snooty Canterlot Ponies like Fancy Pants, Jet Set and Upper Crust... the list goes on, and the fodder for toys is enormous, guys!

* And yes, I'll ask too: please, could you reissue the original G1 six collector ponies as G4s?  I don't understand how Hasbro-now can have copyright issues with Hasbro-then (not speaking legalese or anything), so I'll just keep my fingrs crossed.  ^.^

Personally, I don't think we should be bringing this sort of thing (the existence / legality of customs and fanart) to Hasbro's attention.   This is definitely a case where it's better to ask forgiveness (if necessary) than permission, IMO.

Besides which, that's a question that Hasbro's legal department handles, whereas the people at the Fair are probably pony-designers.  So they probably can't answer that anyway.

Okay, I've got another question that I don't think has been asked:

Any plans to release holiday themed ponies again?  Hasbro sorta did them last year (Valentine's Pinkie Pie and Spring Fluttershy) but we didn't get anyone for Halloween/Christmas or Valentine's Day and Easter 2012.  Any chance of releasing holiday ponies again, especially new characters?  :)

okay, that is the year i was born! O-O you are really a long time collector! ;)
but really, i would like some more background informations too.
also, there have been prototypes that never made it into actual g1 ponies. (these spacey baby ponies, what were they called?) how would it be to realize them as g4? that would be quite nice for g1 and g4 collectors and would connect the gens more. ^^

I tried to video it and my camera ate it:( Don't know how it didn't save:( But yeah, a lot of dancing around questions. She was forbidden to talk about anything beyond 2012 and we asked about the crystal empire and were also told she couldn't say anything:/ We asked why the cutie marks were only on one side and basically got told because they're only printed on the one side, but that's the side the pony was facing when it was new in package:/

As for boys, no more this year, but she said to keep an eye on the show and since they're so many characters, they know the boys are popular, it's possible but she couldn't comment. We also asked about plans for new poses and she basically told us none this year and to keep an eye on the blind bags for the more unique characters/boys. Seems like they understand how popular the bling bags are at least. No plans for brushable blind bags.

That's most of what I caught. I was really excited to see Zecora is in her own box as a TRU exclusive:)

Any one else thing this sounds suspiciously as though most new characters are going to be blind bag size...and basically dont expect plenty of options in the brushable range. If this is the case I ll admit that I am not going to be stunned...but the current "core 6" aspect of the line is going to really put me off G4...or I guess I could simply become a blind bag only collector for G4...that might be more fun :)

Thanks to everyone who is kind enough to give us a report on what was said! Always appreciated!!! :)

I don't know, someone asked if they were going to make brushable versions of blind bags and I interpreted that to mean would they transform some of the popular ones like Tea Love into normal size brushable versions but they answered it as no, the blind bags are too small to add hair to "even though we know little girls love brushing hair" so I wouldn't lose all hope for new characters in regular brushable sizes.

Although, did they actually give a straight up "no" to some questions?  Because that could indicate that the ones about future releases that they're dancing around are actually "yes"es.  And the answer to the cutie mark question was probably so stupid because "'cause it's cheaper" wouldn't have looked good xD

I think almost anything would've been better than "We package it so the cutie mark faces the customer".

Unfortunately Hasbro Q&As for the most part at Fairs have pretty much always had a lack of substance in answer...understandable in many ways but also incredibly frustrating!

It's frustrating that they don't really answer anything clearly and don't tell us about any of the new stuff, just about stuff that's already out. It's July now, we all already have a pretty good idea what will be in stores by the end of the year from what was at NY Toy Fair and all the stuff that's on pre-order from online shops. We wanna know about all that stuff that keeps popping up on taobao and ebay!
I guess I can understand if they can't say yet but what makes me want to headdesk is:

'No I looked this up and we're not skipping wave 2 blind bags. This is wave 2 in front of me and it's in our warehouses right now *points to wave 3 box*'
They really don't understand do they  :yikes:
(obviously they don't understand or they would have brought way more Fair ponies to sell...)

I KNOW!!! I can finally feel my husband's frustration when he calls tech support and knows more about the problem and product than they do.  I am so glad I broke down and ordered TeaLove from China when I found a good deal.  Wave 3 doesn't interest me nearly as much as ANY of the other waves so I'm not looking forward to another 5-6 months of those on the shelves :(

I shouldnt be surprised, but I got myself all excited about what wonderful insights they would give us... but , like last years, it's a big let down...

I'm boycotting the mock Q & A stuf next year, to save myself the stress.

Right.  Instead they should drop the "Q & A" just get their marketing team to make up several little tidbits of what they "can" tell us, if anything and just present that.

ETA:  Otherwise Taobao is going to continue to be our source of "inside" information!  Hasbro?  Do you want that?

Interesting they seem more open about bringing in more ponies from older generations.  Perhaps with the brand firmly on its hooves, they believe they can put money into trademarking.

All I have to say is we need a campaign to get Hasbro to make G4 versions of our favorite ponies.  Come on, Hasbro, please make Wind Whistler.  I'd buy her in a heartbeat.

Did they say "we might bring in 80s ponies", or did they say "we might bring in ponies from older generations"?

Unfortunately if it was the latter, they probably meant G3.  (And indeed they have been plundering the G3 line for brushables and blind bags quite a bit already.)  They seem mystifyingly ignorant of G1.  I mean, they do remember it existed, right?  Right, Hasbro?  *waves a hand in front of their eyes*

I completely agree that we need a petition or campaign to remake G1 ponies as G4s, or at least to remind Hasbro that they exist.  Heck, don't even use the exact same names if that's the problem!  Call her "Whistling Wind" or something!

The speaker specifically mentioned they had G1 ponies they could make toys of.  However, they don't have plans at this time.  If enough people ask for the old favorites like Wind Whistler, Shady, Fizzy, Gusty, etc., they might just listen.

I wonder if we all made a petition. :) Not sure if that would work with a company though, lol. I think Whistling Wind would be a nice name, especially if they couldn't just use Wind Whistler.

Actually, I'm not half-sad about the "not in 2012" answers because the "not in 2011" answers from last year all ended up being released in 2012, so i do have hopes for more boy ponies in 2013 ;)

But yes, some of the answers show how uninformed they are, especially with the wave 2/3 blind bag question and the blind bag -> brushable ponies. I mean really? They should have maybe read the questions a bit better before the Q&A.

I kinda wonder if they were expecting questions about the past of MLP. However with the questions at every Fair being about the new stuff you would think they would clarify it.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one whose (pony)feathers got ruffled! Honestly, Hasbro, WHY did you think up the idea of this Q&A event if you CAN'T SAY ANYTHING about the future of your toy line!? That makes no sense. You think a bunch of people are going to get together in a room and be satisfied with one rep saying a bunch of 'maybes' and 'not nows'?

Most of the consumers are little kids though. Not some adult fans who want G1 ponies or random background ponies.

LBS...this is the exact answer! They cant tell us - we know that, we understand that - so dont build it all up with a Q&A session which you cant answer anything on...it would be much nicer if they could do a little speech on what is coming [toys and merch] - even if we know most of it, at least its straight up information.

True.

However, usually standing behind the kids are the adults paying. (Says, the mommy who glances at pony budget that's at zero.)

My pre-schooler daughter loves any pony! She just wants more of them. :D

Yes! I really don't like the dancing around the answers. They're pony toys not state secrets.

I also felt like I was watching a replay of last year's Q&A with "Crystal Empire" inserted for "Canterlot" in the answers.

Ya know, it sounds silly, but a mail-in campaign might (and I should say might) just work.  I've read that mail-ins are sometimes responsable for bringing television programmes back to life after cancellation, and I know from personal experience that if you write to a company about service or product issues, they tend to take far more notice than if you call or e-mail.  I've written to a number of companies, for complaints, questions, and even praise, and I usually get a response of some sort.

Can you imagine if all us pony people were to take a few minutes and write a short letter, all with four or five of the same points that keep reappearing (more poses, more boy brushables, more re-issues of G1 ponies in G4 form, cutie marks on both flanks please, etc.)... I don't quite know how many active members the Arena has, but if we could get a couple hundred easy... the deluge would be, um, interesting to see...  hmmm....

Just sayin'...

To be fair, if the question was phrased with the word "brushable" instead of "playful pony" it makes sense that they'd get it wrong... we might call them brushables but I'm pretty sure the official term for the size IS "playful pony" and "brushable" to them just means... brushable.
