There's a really crazy tone change in the second part. Like, right now it just looks like it's going to be one of those innocent "let's have a fun party with gifts!" type stories, right? Then in the second part . . . well, I will scan it as soon as I get home. (About to head out and run some errands!)

On the "5 leg" panel, she has 4. It looks like their might be another because of the color of the background and the narrow space between her flank and Jack Frost's head.

I like how Thundercloud was just minding his own business, playing his zither (really? Out of all the random instruments. . .) and the ponies and Jack Frost and Jimmy show up on giant floating records. . . and Thundercloud is mildly surprised but keeps playing. Because we can't keep Tap Dancer from dancing, y'know. :P
I also like the magician and his hat full of answers. I need me one of those. It's like a magic 8 ball only it's a hat. :)

Yes! I LOVE how random it is. And it's really fun to read stories written by people who were obviously just having a good time, rather than trying to make every sentence part of an epic novel that will live forever in history and be inflicted upon bored high-schoolers. XD

Same here, haha. It's so silly. I totally agree with you, it's great to read stories where you can just see people pulled it out of their hat (pun intended)! I love lighthearted, funny stories like these.

I first saw that story when I bought a Finnish(? I think) MLP comic off eBay and of course I couldn't read any of the text so I was completely baffled by the illustrations of two Baby Lickety-Splits! Now that I've read the story . . . well, I am still pretty baffled! :what: And is it just me or is first tooth Baby Lickety-Split vaguely creepy?
"You are going to stay in Pony Land, aren't you?" whispered Baby Lickety to her cousin.

Actually I'm pretty sure her friends are the rest of the First Tooth ponies. In the comics the ponies all seem to run around in gangs or something based on their sets (except the early ponies like Moondancer, Windy, etc).
Man, I just tried to make some rump ice cream, but to no avail! So have a comic instead!

Umm...what the heck? Those comics are all so weird, how can I pick one? Why is Spike naughty? Why is Seashell not writhing in pain from jellyfish stings?? This will require serious thought.

I want to make a website featuring them, but am hazy on how to design it! I mean, I know a bit of HTML and CSS, but I also want to have a nice clean design that lets people easily find / read the comics, you know what I mean?
I would really like to find a way to imitate the way large images are displayed on Tumblr—where a series of images are shown at “thumbnail” sizes, and then when you click on them not only does the picture expand, but also you can easily click to an enlarged version of the next picture without having to click the “back” button. (Hope that makes sense.)
I considered actually using Tumblr, but it’s set-up is so linear that I don’t think it’s really what I want.
My basic ideas are:
- Have stories available by issue number (basically showing all the pages in an issue as clickable thumbnails)
- Have stories also available by character, by tagging stories
- Have a “canon dictionary” that lists not only individual pony profiles, but also the other creatures they meet, geographic regions, and stuff like the Whirling Whirligig
I’m having a hard time thinking of a way to setup the main webpage to where people can easily get to those features without making it a total design trainwreck! Ideas welcomed!
I'd also like people's opinions on how large the "large" (non-thumbnail) scans should be, ideally.

I keep looking at that peacock's crest in his angry-face panel and wanting to make jokes about mohawks/fauxhawks. That bird also looks like he should be shouting insults and commands at a bunch of new recruits in basic training. *LOL*

OH NOOOO, PRINCESS AMBER, NOOOO! The art is a little sloppy here . . . but if you think this is bad, you should see the comic around the really late issues, like #200. The ponies look like their eyes are about to slide off their faces or something.

Sea monster! Because that's what the coin toss told me to vote for last time. And we all know you should *always* listen to what coin tosses tell you. They know their stuff, do coin tosses.
Though I was sorely tempted to vote for for the first one with the weird little booties. Are they cleaning the floors or something? Is it the latest fashion? Is it the curse of the Shoe Imp, who was offended by their horseshoes?
....I'm starting to think maybe I should do pony comics of my own. That Shoe Imp sounds like a story that needs telling! And I *am* pretty random....
LadyM, I'd say if possible, tag all the characters who appear. 'Cause some people are completionists who want *everything* featuring their favourite characters, no matter how small the role. Not that I'm an OCD sufferer who knows this from previous experience and is trying to break the habit or anything....
Plus, it'll make it easier for people to search the archives, if the only things they remember about a comic were that it took place inside Dream Castle and had a singing lamp and Galaxy was in the back of one panel.

I would tag every character, like Mystagic stated, people might remember a certain panel about a comic better than the other. Also, more people would be able to find your comics and the comics about characters they like and want to see! As for name suggestions? I would go for WhisperingWhirligig, haha. Or MLPComics or something in that direction! I'm sure there are people in here that can give better suggestions, I've seen a few nice once already!

I love how Sparkler turned up for exactly one panel and then never showed up again. I guess she thought the Sea Ponies were never coming back and went to go drown her sorrows in some rump ice cream. And someone should really tell Windy on the second page that horn-bleaching looks soooo tacky.

I'd like to know why Firefly and Medly have decorated clouds! I guess regular clouds just aren't pony enough.
My take away from these? I have new "swear phrases" - "Sand and Shore!" "Pony Feathers!!"

The villains in these are so random! "I want a waterfall for my garden - so I'll just take yours!". [maniacal laugh]. Because that is obviously the best solution. :)
And the ponies are never that surprised by these occurrences. I would be stunned if a whole waterfall suddenly disappeared. But I don't live in Dream Valley.

Hey guys, I am still very much of the "testing things oh god how does this thing work" phase of my MLP comic Tumblr, Heck Yeah Pony Scans (http://www.tumblr.com/blog/heckyeahponyscans), but for testing purposes I posted "My Little Pony #199", which hasn't been in this thread, so feel free to check that out (and follow my Tumblr! It will be pretty eventually, I swear!)
#199 is one of those ones I talked about where the ponies' eyes sort of look like they're sliding off their faces and all the babies look like pigs, but hey, it's still pony!
One issue I'm having is I can't figure out how to get the pages to display at full size when they're set up like #199 is right now. I'm going to have to work on this issue . . .

My next goal is to make the clickable pictures more readable. It's not displaying them at their true size when they're clicked . . .
I've thought of a pretty thorough way of tagging that would make it fairly easy to look up various characters and places, but it's going to be a MASSIVE amount of tags for some stories. I might just hide them? (The tags, that is.) I don't know, hmmmm.

I am especially interested in your opinions on the way I ended up organizing the scan and the tags.
Okay, the scans first: apparently Tumblr automatically resizes pictures if they are "too big", which has the unfortunate side effect of making full size pages hard to read. (Or sometimes impossible to read!) To get around this, I split each page into three sections, except the first page which is also the cover so it's big enough. This leaves two panels in each of the other images. Tumblr also only allows ten images per post, but that should be enough to contain most single-issue stories, and for multi-issue stories I am planning to tag them all with the story name (for example, "Danger in Ponyland" for the red cloud story).
Which brings us to the subject of taaaags! Well, there's quite a mess of them, aren't there?
The basic idea behind tags is that if you click on a tag, it will pull up all posts featuring that tag. So if you click "major char: Majesty", it would give you a list of every single post where Majesty is a major character.
Here's how I have it organized so far:
- Issue - My Little Pony 4 - This refers to the specific issue number, so people can find everything from one issue.
- comic: G1 My Little Pony - This is to specify which actual comic run it came from. (There is also the G1 "My Little Pony and Friends" comic that started later, plus I may scan other generation comics.)
- friends - Refers to the fact that friends appear (who are not ponies)
- friend: animal and friend: squirrel / dormouse - The first tag tells what kind of friends they are (animals, as opposed to humans, dolls, clouds, etc) and the other tags tell what kind of animals.
- major char: [ponyname] - Every pony who had a speaking line got tagged with this (short for "major character"). I am sort of on the fence about whether Medley should be considered a major character or not; she doesn't speak but does play a tune to put the dormouse and squirrel to sleep. Opinions?
- just the pony name - The tags "Majesty", "Applejack", etc, mark every story a pony is in, for completionists or people who only remember one panel from a story.
General opinions welcomed too!

LadyMoondancer, earlier today I was finding that if I right-click those resized images and click "View Image", that allows me to view just that image, at full size if I want. So even though there was a re-size done in-browser, the original size was still in there.

Same here! Before, Lemon Drop was just another pony in the (yawn) collector pose. I like her much better now that I've seen her as a competitive jumper who obsessively designs jumping courses!

I HAD that book as a little girl, but I couldn't remember the name or anything and kinda thought I had dreamed the whole thing up! For some reason I started thinking about the book every single day for the past few weeks. I was going to make a thread about it asking if it was real, and then you go and post this! *This* was one of the stories I still remember. Is "Baby Firefly's Adventure" about a nightmare involving a lightning storm? I *vaguely* remember a story like that. And is the last page or back cover a poem about the Sea Ponies? PLEASE tell me you're going to scan this whole book! I loved it so much. The art was spectacular!

Oh, and my Alexandra the unicorn books. I loved the art in those too, but that's not on-topic for this thread, so I'll stop. XD

Thank you for that link! I must be missing something (very possible since I just woke up). I'm only finding pics of toys and toy inserts in that album. But I'm ALSO finding some great pics of merchandise I had and had forgotten about, so it's win-win! :D
And that coin trick would have been the smart way to do it, but you hit the nail on the head--I'd never remember what was supposed to be what without writing it down, and then I'd still get it wrong. XD

I do recall Posey's brush! I thought the same thing about it. :) My mother had a hairbrush that *looked* similar, but when I tried using it, it was NOT soft, haha. I was so disappointed.

LadyM, I don't recall a book with Powder in a snowstorm (maybe it was an Escape from Catrina picture book? I remember Powder getting caught in a snowstorm in that special...or maybe Hasbro just recycled that bit of story for a different book *LOL*), but as to the other one...was it Rainbow Rider's Birthday Adventure? I know the cover had her looking through a rainbow telescope.

Bit of a mistake here, as the set of sea ponies depicted here had already been introduced in a previous comic. I think they were trying for the Pretty 'n Pearly babies.

I think my computer must've voted for a different story and was put out that the snowdrop one won, because it froze hard and had to be forcefully rebooted as soon as I looked at the first picture!
Lily is such a pretty pony. I've always loved that colour combo, especially with her wavy mane.
Honeysuckle appears to have had collagen lip injections in that one panel on the next-to-last page. Maybe she had a hot date for New Year's. No wonder she wanted to try to change the season over to the new year!
I'm going to miss these stories. After today, I won't be able to check out the Arena for a week. I'm just glad I'm not leaving on any cliffhangers from these stories. XD
