Pony Corral / Koningdag: Where to head to for pony hunting?
« on: January 07, 2024, 10:59:27 AM »
This is a question for our members from the Netherlands / neighbouring countries: This year, my partner and I are hoping to finally make it over to NL for the huge fleamarkets on King's Day. Which city should we head for? There's Amsterdam, of course, but I've also heard good things about the fleamarkets in Rotterdam, Groningen, Den Haag etc. Which would you recommend? Other than ponies, we're also looking for books / DVDs / CDs (yes, I speak Dutch), household items, tools etc. We're very much after private sellers, rather than professionals or antique dealers.

Thanks in advance! Dank je wel!

MLP Nirvana / Help me ID this Cotton Candy, please!
« on: May 01, 2023, 03:50:40 AM »
Hi folks!

I found this G1 Cotton Candy at a car boot sale today. I say "Cotton Candy" - she's actually closer to Peachy in colour, but she's got Cotton Candy's symbol, so that's the name I'll go with.

Looking at her blue eyes, I thought she was just an Italian at first (not uncommon to find in Belgium), but then I noticed that she doesn't have any hoof marks and that only half the plugs on her mane actually have hair in them, which I haven't seen on Italians before. The plastic is quite soft and squeezable, and her head moves freely. She's got air-brushed blue eyes, and, as I said above, her body colour is peach, rather than pink / light pink (as her head moves so easily, I took a peep inside, and it's the same colour there, so not faded).

Any idea where my mystery lady is from?

The Dollhouse / For sale: Ever After High Thronecoming Blondie Locks!
« on: April 16, 2016, 11:52:40 AM »
I bought this little beauty for my friend, but it turns out she doesn't need her, so Blondie Locks is looking for a new home (preferrably without having to worry about bears).

I got the doll second-hand, but she looks like she's just been removed from the box. She's even still got the elastic bands holding parts of her outfit in place, and her hair is in the original style. The only flaw I can see is that the loose part of her hair is a little mussed, but that should be easily fixed.

Blondie Locks is wearing her complete outfit, including earrings and shoes. She comes with her original stand, but none of the other accessories.

If you'd like to see pics, just let me know and I'll take some.

Price: Make an offer. I have a general idea of what she's worth, but I'm happy to work something out.

I can ship her (I'm UK based), or if you live in the Greater London area, you're welcome to pick her up.

Arts & Crafts Corral / My Little Manatees
« on: January 28, 2016, 04:44:10 AM »
Manatees are my favourite animals. I love the way they look, the way they move and interact. The other day, my friend, Pseudomonas, and I were talking about a manatee sanctuary. The people working there had given the manatees names. I don't remember what they were, but I didn't think they were very fitting. I thought manatees should have names like Shadow Dancer and Mystique, names alluding to their grace. Pseudomonas argued that those more sounded like names of "My Little Manatees"... and the idea was born.

I've only taken up drawing very recently, and I'm still developing my style, but I do like the way they came out.

These three were among the first I drew, simply in pencil with highlights in gel pen.

Here are my OCs, Hope and Destiny (who's normally purple, but my coloured crayons didn't come with purple, hence the colour change). Again, it's pencil, this time outlined in pen and coloured in. I think this is the technique I'll stick with.

Next, I'm planning to do a few superhero manatees. Here's a quick sketch of one: Batmanatee!

Do you like them? If I draw some more, I might start a blog to show them off. :)

Wanted! / G1 and G3 rearing pose baits wanted!
« on: January 10, 2016, 10:30:45 AM »
I'm looking for G1 (preferred) and G3 baits in rearing pose. They're going to be used for customising, so I don't care about haircuts, marks on body etc. Nice eyes would be good, but it's not a must.

Please send me pictures and a shipping quote to the UK.

Off Topic / Calling all hobby cooks!
« on: April 25, 2015, 10:56:14 AM »
First off, I'm not much of a cook. I do enjoy it, though, so tonight I thought I'd give it a go and try making my own pasta sauce.

I used this recipe:

http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/29333/cheesy-tomato-sauce.aspx?o_is=LV

I don't think I made any mistakes with the recipe. The sauce looked just like in the picture. The problem was the taste. It was very bland and didn't taste like much of anything, even when I added more tomato puree and herbs to it. In the end, I couldn't use it at all and had to eat my pasta with store-bought tomato sauce.

So, here's the question: What could I have done to get more flavour into the sauce? Which spices / herbs can you recommend to compliment tomato? Also, please share any nice (vegetarian) pasta sauce recipes you've got. I do want to try again, but next time, I'd like to produce something edible. ;)

Off Topic / Holiday ideas, please!
« on: February 23, 2015, 08:43:06 PM »
For the past couple of years, I've spent my birthday (end of May) with my friends in the US. This year, though, I'm flat-hunting, so I had to set aside a large sum of money for the deposit, removal van etc. and won't have enough left for a big holiday.

That said, I still want to go away for a few days over my birthday. But where shall I go?

Here are some facts about the kind of holiday I enjoy:

- I like travelling by plane or train, but not by boat / ferry.

- I don't drive, so going somewhere and renting a car is not an option. Also, it means wherever I go has to have good public transport.

- As I'm only planning to go away for a few days / a week, the holiday should not include hours and hours of travelling. I'm based in London.

- While I certainly wouldn't mind nice weather, I'm not the "lying around on a beach, doing nothing all day" type. I'm also not too fond of spas and such.

- My ideal holiday would be a combination of nature and culture.

So, any ideas? They don't have to be places to go; they can also be about the kind of holiday I might enjoy etc.

Thanks, guys!

Pony Brag Arena / Nearly-Christmas charity shop brag!
« on: December 27, 2014, 10:27:41 AM »
I'm staying with my family for the holidays. Today, we took a few boxes with books to a charity shop and had a look around as well, of course. I didn't expect to find anything, as we'd only been there on Monday. Goodness, was I wrong!

I found a lovely Show Stable in a colour combination I haven't got yet. It's in a really good state, even the stickers, and it came with three ponies and quite a few accessories, too. Here, have a look:

Off Topic / Keep your fingers crossed for my friends, please!
« on: September 17, 2014, 09:54:36 PM »
My friends are getting married on Saturday. They spent so much time and energy (not to mention money) on this wedding... and now they've both come down with flue / cold symptoms and are feeling rather poorly!

Can you please all keep your fingers crossed and send them some good vibes, so they make a full recovery in time for their big day? Thanks, guys!  :lovey:

Off Topic / Fantasy / LotR / fashion fans? A little help, please!
« on: August 14, 2014, 09:46:47 PM »
A little background: My friend's getting married in September. After searching in vain for a dress in the more traditional stores (M&S, Primark), I told myself, "Why not go for something I truly love?" I went online and found this amazing shop that sells medieval / fairy tale / gothic-style clothes. It's something I wanted to try for ages, but I never got the chance (or the nerve) to go for it... until now!

Here's the dress I bought (I went for the wine red):

http://www.thedarkangel.co.uk/en/product/419wn-gabriel-dress

It arrived earlier this week, and it's even more stunning than in the pictures.

Now, here's what I need help with. As you can see, the dress has got a very nice neckline, so I'm wondering about what kind of necklace and other jewellery would go with it. Also, there's the question of nail polish / no nail polish / if yes, which colour? In order to do the dress justice, I want to stay traditionally fairytale in style, maybe a little Elvish?

I thought we could all brain-storm together and see what comes up. Of course, other advice for styling is welcome as well! If you've got a similar style, I'd love to see pics, too.

Off Topic / Renting my first own flat - Advice?
« on: February 01, 2014, 09:39:59 PM »
It's finally happening. After years of flat-shares, I'm at last earning the kind of money that'll allow me to rent my own place (If you're wondering what took me so long, check out where I live). I'm so happy, but also a little anxious because I've never rented anything on my own before.

What I'd like from you guys is some advice, both general and specific, on what to look for in a flat, how to deal with rental agencies (I'd prefer a private landlord, but mostly, it's done via agencies these days), how to avoid stupid mistakes that'll cost me a lot of money and so on.

Thanks in advance!

Off Topic / Please vote for my friend!
« on: January 26, 2014, 09:28:02 AM »
Hey guys,

My friend's girlfriend entered this modelling competition that will win her a free boutique dress. It took ages to persuade her to enter because she's a little shy, and it would mean the world for her to win. So if you could have a look at the entries and find that Hannah, 26, London (top row, left-hand side of the page) is the prettiest (which she is!), could you please vote for her? I'm afraid you can only vote if you've got a FB account, but I suppose most of you do anyway.

Thanks a lot!

Off Topic / Engagement ring - wedding ring question!
« on: March 23, 2013, 10:50:39 AM »
I've got a question for the married folk around here (or other people who might know): When you get engaged, you get an engagement ring. And when you then get married, do you use the same ring or a special wedding ring? If you go for a different wedding ring, what do you do with the engagement ring? Do you just take it off, or do you still wear it, along with the wedding ring? On a different finger, maybe? I know there are engagement ring / wedding ring combinations that interlock, but I'm not talking about those. I'd just like some experience and some opinions, please.
