I usually wash all new ponies, and do their hair, just because it's so fun! Most ponies just get a basic scrub with soap, and have their hair done with shampoo and conditioner, then I stand them on a towel for a few days to dry out before being put away.
You definitely shouldn't get pests in ponies, there's nothing to attract them. (I collect antiquarian books as well as ponies, so I know about insect troubles. believe me, even the grungiest pony is less alarming than a poor old book with book beetle.)

You're definitely not the only one! G4 is cute and all, but it's just not as awesome as G1. And I so agree with the person who said they wish there was more variation in G4. I mean, how many Fluttershys does one person actually need? (No wait, don't answer that....)
It does make G1 more fun to collect because they aren't so readily available, though.

Hello everyone!
Well, after lurking around here for a while, reading up on all things pony-related, I've finally got around to creating an account. So! Hello!
I'm still fairly new to collecting ponies. It all started a little over a year ago when my friend and I were clearing out some of her childhood toys; she had a lot of second-hand G1 ponies when she was little. I was immediately assailed and won over by their immense cuteness (who wouldn't be?). The aforementioned friend took heed of my excitement and bought me a Baby Ribbon for my birthday. From then on I was hooked; my friend and I now co-own a collection comprised of her childhood ponies and some newer acquisitions of mine from eBay. Ostensibly we collect G1 ponies, but three G3s, a G2, and a whole lot of those cute little mini G4 ponies (you can buy them in blind bags in Tesco's!) seem to have found their way into the collection as well....
I feel bound to confess that I am totally addicted to restoring dilapidated/damaged little ponies. Mould, dirty marks, chipped paint, frizzy manes, no tails, faded colouring....it is all so much temptation to me. There's nothing nicer than acquiring a poor grubby little pony and giving her a new lease of life. My greatest triumph so far has been making new wings for flutter ponies. Next project: restoring a princess pony whose assorted flaws include a chipped symbol. Interesting ideas involving chrome silver enamel paint have been entertained.
I realise I've rambled on. Sorry! I can be a bit like that once I get started, especially on the subject of ponies.
