Breyer identification help & another random horse
« on: February 16, 2013, 10:53:17 AM »
Hey all, I was just at a thrift store today and found a couple horses. I know I hear the name Breyer around a lot and that people collect them, and I found one that is MOC... not sure if it's worth anything, but  I figured if this pretty little girl isn't worth much or is too new or whatever, it would make a great custom for me to play with. I just want to check on it first to make sure I wouldn't be destroying something another person would treasure. Here she is:

Then I found this other horse... wondering if anyone could identify it. I've never seen one like this before, looks like it used to have a chain reins on it, there's a hole in the muzzle where the chain goes through, she was probably once quite pretty.

Hello :) I used to collect breyer horses and found that this site is very helpful

http://www.identifyyourbreyer.com/identify/PaddockPal/Unicorn.htm

The unicorn you have pictured is from 1999-2000. Not sure how many were produced though.

Hope this helps :)

That is a very cute unicorn and would go well with the two unicorns my sister has.

Paddock Pals (previously called Little Bits) are not very popular or worth much.  The $5 price is probably far more accurate from my experience with that line.  So, customize away!

I think the other horse is a Breyer Western Pony.  It's mold is very similar to the Breyer Western Horse; so, it could be that instead - just depends on how tall it is.  That mold has been copied often so there are a number of knock-offs too, but yours looks about right to be a genuine Breyer based on the pictures  The mold is old enough that it might not have a Breyer stamp on it anywhere.

would some more detailed pictures of the second horse help you identify it? if so let me know what you'd need photographed

there aren't any stamps on it at all

How tall is it?  The Western Pony is about 7 in. to the top of his ears.  I don't have a Western Horse to measure, but it's significantly taller.  The first Western Horse was produced in 1950 and the Western Pony in 1956.  The mold marks weren't added until around 1960.  Both came in that color and had chain reins (and a saddle).  Honestly, the way I tell with any model I'm not certain of just by looking at it is by the weight/feel of the plastic.  Knock-offs are made from a cheaper, lighter weight plastic - genuine Breyers have a copletely different feel.  I do think yours is a Breyer though - most knock-offs I've seen usually aren't that close in color to a real one and the details look crisper than I would expect from a knock-off.

Then it should be the glossy palomino version of the #57 Western Horse made from 1950 - 1970 (though without the mold mark that narrows it down to before 1960).  http://breyerhorsetalk.com/article/breyer-beginnings57-western-horse

The glossy palimino in that shape wouldn't be more than $5-$7.
