Pat Pend?
« on: August 14, 2021, 04:41:01 AM »
I remembered some of my childhood ponies saying Pat Pend on the bottom of their hooves, so when I came across them again, I looked, and sure enough, some do say Pat Pend. Does that mean these are really really early ponies? Ponies that were never meant to be released, but were anyway?

I played with them lots when I was really little, so they're not in the best shape, so I doubt they're worth all that much, I'm just curious xD

Patent Pending just means that at the time of mold creation, the patent hadn't been granted yet. They were certain that they would get it, so that's why they went ahead with the pony creation before all the legalities were finalized.

It' standard practice; all of them say Pat Pend if I'm not mistaken.

All of them being G1s? Which would mean I have a selection of G1s and G2s?

No, some G1 have the Pat Pend marking and some do not. I believe the marking was removed when the patent was approved. Here's an old thread with some more info. :)

All G1 ponies made after 1987-89 do not have a PAT PEND stamp.

PAT PEND means "patent pending", the patent for MLP had been applied for, but had not yet been granted. The patent was granted sometime between 1987-1989 as between those years the mark is phased out. This was also the time when manufacture was switched from Hong Kong to China.

I *think* all or almost all China made ponies do not have a PAT PEND stamp (I could be wrong, please correct me if I am)

The ones to check would probably be early ones like the flutters, but I can't get at mine to look at their hooves right now. They're in the cabinet.

Sometimes later distribution in some areas mean there are versions of the same pony that have pat pend and those that don't. For example some Big Brothers I think in mainland Europe don't have PP, but the ones in the US and Canada tend to have it. The ones I've seen here have also been PP, though I admit I haven't been monitoring it.

The feet are a kind of weird history lesson in a way, because they sometimes have Hasbro Inc, sometimes Hasbro Bradley, sometimes Hasbro Int'l...and then different places of manufacturer, all of which tell small stories about the evolution of MLP.

Yes, you are right Taffeta, my Mum's Rose Dust has China PAT PEND hoof marks :) I think it is true for some of the Princesses too.

You are absolutely right about the later releases, especially in the EU countries, Germany is the most notable one. The releases were slightly later, compared to the USA and Canada.
