Random note, I'm pretty sure the teal outfit that Megan wears in the show was originally "Picnic in the Park", and at some point the name was accidentally switched with the denim dress with the white shirt with little hearts on it, which was originally Country Jamboree.

That's how they were labeled in the brochure I had as a kid (denim = Country Jamboree, teal outfit = Picnic) and it would fit better, because in the backcard art of the teal outfit, Megan is sitting on the ground with a picnic basket, feeding Sundance a carrot.

It's true that the backcards are always labeled the opposite, but in my heart the denim one is Country Jamboree.  :P (Denim feels more "country" to me, too.)

I imagine Dream Castle would prove popular because it's so iconic. But if it was left up to me, I'd like a re-release of the kitchen or the schoolhouse. They're both cute, and small enough to store easily.

What, Hasbro making a mistake?

...Never.

(Night Song/Stella anyone?)

But I just think of it as the second edition M&S wear (and saying M&S wear always amuses me <3). I only learned the US name to communicate which one it was to other people. As far as I'm concerned there's Country Jamboree and five other not Country Jamboree M&S outfits ;)

@ZeldatheSwordsman, yeah, but it's also the only one of the M&S outfits the UK had. And it's almost certainly got picked so that it would sync with the movie, since Megan is I think on the Movie Star card wearing it. But my point was that I used to look at that ad a lot as a kid, wanting PE, and I link it in threads a lot and that's the first time in 30 years I realised that it's the 2nd 1987 Megan and Sundance and not the more common one.  Which makes sense in the timeline, I just never noticed till now xD.

I'd probably want ALL of them.

Space and finances will conspire against me.

That being said, I'd want a green version of the Waterfall, as that's the only playset of the ones listed that I don't have.

I often wonder why there ever was a green waterfall.

It doesn't make an iota of sense, not really.

"Everywhere else they're selling this white one so let's spend money and make a green one just to sell in the UK".

Why, Hasbro? ><

It also used to be much easier to ship those abroad. Then they changed the postage dimensions and made it more tricky. I traded quite a few overseas in the old days, but now I'm not sure how easy it would be.

I kinda like Cascade's Waterfall a bit better, because of how the green changes the base from a pool in the clouds to a pool amid mossy rocks or grassy hillocks.

I kind of assumed it was because most of the early pegasi didn't get released in the UK. Meanwhile nearly all of the early earth ponies were part of the UK line, so it seems logical they wanted the playset to be more "earth based" rather than among the clouds. That way the playset feels more compatible with most of the ponies Hasbro UK were offering at the time. (As to why they didn't seem to want to release many unicorns/pegasi in the beginning, that's harder to think of a plausible explanation for)

That is a really smart answer. I never thought about it like that but it makes absolute sense.

I'm guessing the uni peg thing was just they thought it was a financial gamble early on. In 1986 mad things happened so I put that down to Hasbro being a bit chaotic...since they did get UK carded, just not UK sold.

But by that point the Waterfall was done.

Also, they originally sold an earth pony with it here, Sprinkles came later in 1985. So an earth pony would not be in the clouds.

Brilliant. Can't believe I never thought of that.

Ohhh, PE as an apartment building would be so much better!  Or even a two story house (that takes up half as much floor space.)  Kids love elevator features and balconies, it's kind of strange that they denied themselves both those elements by making it a ranch style house.
I can think of some reasons why they went with that
1. They had done multilevel playsets the previous two years (Dream Castle and the Lullabye Nursery), so a ranch style house was a way to mix it up a bit.
2. A ranch-style house probably seemed thematically-appropriate to them
3. Occupying a lot of floor space was considered impressive (and there are dollhouses that take up a fair bit more, as well as more vertical room), and they wanted to give MLP a playset that was impressively huge (it's not the most extreme example from Hasbro either; that would be the 7' long USS Flagg of G.I. Joe fame).
4. Going with a large-footprint design let them work in a courtyard and swimming pool.

Good points!

I'm curious whether the PE, how it came to be and maybe earlier designs, was discussed with Bonnie Zacherle when she attended MLP fairs in the past? If anyone remembers, I'd love to hear all about it :)
