What's up with forelock trims?
« on: October 25, 2019, 03:43:10 AM »
Hello everyone,

You know how some ponies have forelock cuts right?
My questions is, how did they get them?
Like, did children only cut of their forelock, or were they made this way?

Anyone got answers?

Thanks.

Cheers,

Luke

Well, I got some theories.

A child might not like it, so chop.
Could be difficult to tame, so chop.
All the other ponies have no forelocks, so chop.
Its a different hair length, so chop.
Might've melted together, so chop.
Wanted to give the pony a hairstyle but after an attempt at styling, it looks horrible, so chop.

Misunderstood the question, probably stylistic choice.

I had a few cut forelocks on my childhood ponies. I probably disliked that they faced another direction from the mane. I also cut some of their hair to distinguish mine from my friend's ponies.

I find it a weird choice since with G1s at least, I don't find them that bothersome?

However, with G2s, that's another story. ;) They have crazy forelocks that stick straight up. Sundance was my least favourite pony because of that, all the others had long hair, but she was the only one who had hair sticking up! I never cut it, but I did tape it down.

Because some kids are brats. I bought a pony for my cousin's boyfriend's daughter last year and the first thing she wanted to do was give her a haircut.

Kids dont always understand that what they do have consequenses and get odd ideas. I never did something to a pony but I remember that when I was a kid, I did some stupid things... I cut my own eyelashes because I thought they were too long, I drew crowns on Bambi in a book I had, because royalty wear crowns but bambi didnt in that book (totally regreted that afterward).  I put lotion on a mcdonalds barbie figure and thought it would disappear on its own just like it did on skin... I also remember having a hard time grasping the fact that the hair on toys wouldn't grow back if it was cut like human hair.

I've seen a few people say they did it because they felt like the hair was in the pony's eyes and it couldn't see.  (I love forelocks myself and didn't give them the chop as a kid, lol.  I wish every pony gen had forelocks.)

I didn’t cut pony hair as a child.  But to be fair to kids that did... it’s a form of play.  Cutting hair is something that adults are allowed to do but that children aren’t allowed to do except on toys.

This!
I was just thinking the same thing the other day when I realized I don’t own a baby glory who hasn’t had a forelock trim
My first thought was...a child sneaking scissors and just starting the haircut when someone catches them..
Hence, stopping at the forelock
New hairstyle interrupted. Probably the same kids who had all the pens, hilighters, and sharpies! Lol
I actually don’t mind a “well loved” pony most of the time. Lord knows I’ve given many Barbies a new haircut

Its up to the parents to teach their kids to take care of their things.

My kid went through a Syd stage and it ended after multiple admonitions, toys chucked in the trash, or given away if they could be salvaged, and not getting replacements for whatever she purposely wrecked. After that, she took much better care of the items she recieved.

I was a clumsy child, but never a destructive child. A clumsy child who breaks things is different from a destructive one.

I think it's probably mostly a combination of kids not realizing that toy pony hair won't grow back after it's been cut and some kids being destructive with their toys.  My cousin hated Barbie and buried all of her dolls and Barbie things in the backyard.

I've heard one person say that she wanted her pony to have the same hairstyle as the matching pony in the cartoon so she tried to cut it to make it match.

Its not hard to tell them, don't cut hair, it won't grow back. Kids aren't dumb.

Probably because hair styling is fun! Me and my sister did it a lot, and I don't know if it was issue with not realizing that it never grew back, or just because it was fun to do. Parents don't always know that kids cut the hair anyway, so how's the kid to know I guess.  I thought some g1s were made with forelocks?

Yes, most G1s had forelocks except (most) unicorns and some later Euro ponies. :)
