Using fabric to simulate grass on shelves

Thought of a relatively inexpensive way to add "grass" to my shelves so the G4 building playsets look nicer. Currently have the Golden Oaks library, and am looking for the Sweet Apple Acres barn. I think my Walmart might have it, and if not I'll be checking other stores in Knoxville in a couple weeks. Would like to add Rarity's boutique, but that shelf is already getting quite crowded.

Oh man, now I want to tack on some sky blue fabric to the wall and attach some happy little clouds. Really bring this whole scene to life.

It looks nice. I think you can easily squeeze in both the farm and the boutique. Go for it! It'll look super!

Looks great! As Taxel said make sure you check the fabric doesn't stain the ponies :) You could make your own cloud background - blue wallpaper then sponge clouds on. That would at least be in the right scale then.

Make sure that material is color fast or it will stain all your ponies!

Huh, staining could be an issue... It's some cheap flannel I picked up at Walmart. How do you know if that'll cause stains?

I think you wash it in vinegar and salt.

My first clue that it would stain was the darker colour.  They don't pre-treat textiles in the manufacturing process.  Just soak it in a tub of white vinegar and salt for a few days, then hand wash and gently air dry.

Ah, was wondering what that treatment would do. Would a detergent/water bath suffice for the hand washing, after the vinegar bath?
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to take care of this after Christmas, as I'll be out of state for a few days.

Does the proportion of vinegar to salt matter, or toss some in a tub and hope for the best?

It's like 1 tablespoon salt to 1 cup vinegar.  :)
