It's always sad to lose one of your foundation sites in a community - I suppose it was personal reasons why it wasn't just archived and left available, which is unfortunate but understandable.  I'll always have fond memories of waiting for Dream Valley to load (back in ye good olde days of dial-up internet) and of it being the place I had heard many of the cartoon songs for the first time via RealPlayer.

This is really ambivalent for me. DV was the site that taught me about all the ponies the US had that the UK didn't. I spent ages at the library in 1997 printing out the pages bit by bit, making want lists, and sharing information on ponies in the UK.

I think it's sad that the first proper pony ID site has gone. DV is probably the reason a lot of us ever made a community, that and the old TP. It is sad to see old stuff from the pony community go. I hate it from that point of view, because it was one of those things that connected collectors from the 1990s right through.

Unfortunately, like some other UK collectors,  I have as many frustrating memories of DV as I do good ones, and that taints my memories of it and what it should have continued to be for the community as a whole. I regret the loss of DV for what it was, but in reality, DV has not been what it was originally for a long time, nor has it been updated or corrected for a long period, either.

 I guess sooner or later the decision has to be made whether to keep it or not, and Kim's made the decision, for whatever reason.

this makes me so sad. i always used that site, and when i remember finding it when i was 8 or so, and i'd fantasize about having a big collection one day. oh, the memories

oh... now this made me very sad DV was the first comprehensive site I stumbled upon, the one that taught me about G1 ponies the most, and the one I loved the most. it was also my first place to go whenever I found a new pony and did not even know its name (I also used it to identify the official names of my childhood ponies), the pony identifier was such a great and detailed feature of the site, and I'm sure it helped tons of new(er) collectors identify their ponies, and at the same time, teaching them about them.

I'm sad Kimberly did not find another way to preserve it, like archiving it or handing it over to someone, but she must have had her reasons against, and, as the site, as far as I can remember, was based upon her own collection, photos and everything, handing it over does not even sound a good idea anymore. whatever the cause was, her decision has to be respected.

Goodbye Dream Valley! you left a hole in my heart...

I'm bummed! I have enjoyed that site from way back. I'm happy to have found My Little Wiki which is loaded with info on what ponies came with what, but DV will still be very much missed.

It surprises me that she would have just shut it down, rather than offer it up to somebody to take over. She has many times complained of the cost of maintaining the sites with no returns/donations. But at the same time, it had been forever since there were any updates to correct missing or incorrect info, so... it is sad to see it go, but there are better reference sites out there.
