I asked the seller if she was the original owner and removed her from the packaging. She said she wasn't and she came across them in a sale.

Got an answer too:

rear left hoof ...hong kong
rear right hoof ...hasbro pat pend
no year marking , which kind of threw me off...they usually have the year stamp.

has a yellow sun spot with hot pink rays
blue outer squares
blue squares inside plastic as well as glow in the dark circles
light pink mane
yellow eyes with 2 lashes on top and bottom
shes a weird kind of pink/orange color

also:

i went to a garage sale..the lady was a little older than me bout 60ish , im 50...they were either hers or her daughters...I have been to her sales in the past , she seems to have older toys. If you like I could stop by her house and ask her how she aquired that one..

And yes, I told her it would be awesome if she could ask. She also said she would take more pictures before sending the pony out to her new owner. Will post them here as soon as I have them.

Something just occurred to me.

So obviously the yellow circles are the equivalent of the stars and the blue squares the hearts in the Glowing Magic ponies. Well, I think I'm right in saying that the only Glowing Magic pony who ever had blue hearts was Dazzleglow. And that it's been theorised, because of the TV commercial and such, that the blue heart Dazzle was the original and then they switched to pink hearts for whatever reason.

But Sunspot's body tone is much more like Brightglow or Happyglow.

So was Hasbro considering putting blue hearts in one or both of those as well, and decided against it? Is this completely coincidental, related to Dazzleglow or some kind of colour test as well as a plastic/pony style test?

Interesting about the lack of date.

My one confusion about her is why she has Sunspot's symbol. Unless they wanted to find out what she would look like with a symbol as regards glowing stuff/plastic...but the hair and such is different, so I don't know...

I just realised why she looked odd to me (besides the obvious). I am pretty certain that Sunspot doesn't have yellow eyes.

Well, we don't know if this prototype was designed before or after the Sparkle ponies were produced.    It's possible the prototype came after the Sparkle ponies had debuted, and they just used a "predesigned" pony to test the concept on.  (Like, presumably, that BBE Sunlight that showed up a few years ago.)  But it's also possible that Sunspot and her comrades originally were intended to have glow-in-the-dark bits. Hasbro might have shelved the concept, turned them into Sparkle ponies instead, then resurrected it a couple years later for the Glow 'n Shows.

So many unanswered questions!

I love that G1's have been out over 30 years now, and we still find new unique ponies like this. She's so pretty! Congrats to her new owner.
