Removing pony heads for cleaning.
« on: September 10, 2016, 07:45:01 AM »
Are ponies worth less if their heads have been removed for thorough cleaning?

I have a pony who really needs a good Oxyclean bath, but I don't want to leave her in the water to soak with her tail in- so she doesn't get tail rust. So I was thinking of taking her head off and removing the tail and washer before soaking.

She is a pony that could be worth a bit of money.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

No, it doesn't really affect value, except for super-picky collectors.  I think most collectors understand that ponies need cleaning sometimes and that one should always check inside for nastiness!

Right, I agree with lovesbabysquirmy. Just mention that her head has been removed when you sell her and you should be fine!

The only thing I'd suggest is NOT to glue the head back on. A lot of people don't like having ponies that have been messed with to such a degree, and there's no telling what effect the glue could have down the line.

Depends on the collector - there are some that strongly prefer head-seal intact, others who like that a pony's openable, peace of mind knowing there aren't gross things lurking around inside.  If the neck ring is cut or torn rather than simply unglued that definitely detracts from their value.

Personally I open all my ponies where possible to make sure they don't have hidden problems.  Pretty scary how many show up with hidden tail rust, mildew, and grunge on their insides.
