Deflocking
« on: September 07, 2016, 03:07:22 PM »
I was given a magic star. Her mane, tail, and structure are great. Her flocking looked like a case of mange. I have her head done. I've gotten all except the last thin sticky layer off of her body. I can't use acetone. Is goo gone worth a try? Any other suggestions? This is my first attempt at any kind of restoration.

Goo gone may take symbol paint off, be careful!

I use rubbing alcohol on areas where I can't use acetone.  It takes more scrubbing that way, but it's pretty safe and will eventually get it all off.  I have tried Goo Gone but had no luck with it (I don't think I tried it on the symbols).

What do you use to scrub with? Brush?

And thank you. :) She's an experiment, but I still don't want to ruin her.

Soaking the pony in a hot oxiclean bath then rubbing the glue off with a magic eraser sometimes works.  I use a stiff toothbrush to get into the hard to reach spots.

I use acetone for everywhere except over symbols/eyes...for those I use rubbing alcohol and lots of scrubbing. I douse a cotton pad in rubbing alcohol and scrub scrub scrub. It's definitely a labour of love sometimes!

I didn't even think of rubbing alcohol! I've had a partially deflocked Angel sitting in my closet. I just slightly smudged one of her symbols from acetone and I've been too nervous to try an oxiclean bath.

I can handle rubbing alcohol and I have an old stiff toothbrush. I'll try it out tomorrow. :)

My scoliosis caused neck issues that narrowed my space for the spinal cord and vessels going to my brain, so heavy fumes, even outside, will make me pass out. It's a bummer since I actually like cleaning and am pretty good at it.

I have never tried it myself (been meaning to) but this tutorial looks promising!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83-eT6EGIjk It uses a material called Jasco that, in this video at least, does not harm pony paint. It does require excellent ventilation/working outside! I say wear a paint fume filtering mask, although I don't know anything about the stuff it can't hurt to do so.

It takes forever - but I've just been working on one in small sessions. But after an oxyclean bath, and a rinse (all with really hot water), I've been able to just rub the glue with my finger and it rolls up. Kinda like when trying to remove glue from your hands.

You can always send your ponies to someone who will deflock for you, especially if your health is at risk!

I typically deflock with acetone and non-acetone nail polish remover. The non-acetone is okay for symbols of you are careful.

Be careful with oxyclean baths. It does seem to help but it can bleach hair and give it an awful texture. It happened to my Shady.

I never thought of rubbing alcohol!  I may give that a try.

Anyone have any tips for getting in all those Pegasus wing crevices?  I use q-tips (regular and pointed) but they don't seem to really get in there.

That's probably because chartreuse hair bleeds all over whenever it's exposed to pretty much anything.  Oxiclean is safe enough, I just don't go crazy on the temperature and amount of time I leave them in.

I've found toothpicks helpful. I'll soak a cotton pad in acetone and cover the wings completely for a few minutes to try and get the acetone to sink into the glue, then use the toothpick to dig it out :)
