As I only have 10 ponies, it's quite easy for me at the moment! I can see my herd growing rapidly though, so it might get a bit more complicated in the future...

More than 40  and less than 80?  That's my guess.  I know who I have and that's about it.   :P

I take pics of every single pony that comes to join the herd
I do end up upgrading and selling them sometimes ,so is hard to keep up
but last time I counted I was going at 1100 , counting every single pony  of every size, type .
so I would say I have double of that , and some G2 armies keep growing so.......yep
also I add most of the g4s double, 1 to keep mib and 1 loose of most of the releases
so I have added a lot since the last count . but who is counting ????
not me for sure :)

I sorted started keeping count and using the collector's book as a check list but at the same time I haven't always kept up. I have a rough idea of who I don't have and who should be upgraded lol. But I never say no to ponies given even if its a double. :P Thats for the G1s. As for G2-G4 no idea of who/what  I have most of the time. LOL!!!!

Ahaha, keep track?  I try to keep track of my Blue Belles, I at least count them once in a while when I clean them, but I have a hard time even with them, let alone my 'for sale' ones!  There are *tons* of mostly bait ponies in my shed, so many that I may actually set up a booth at the flea market to try to sell them, because they really aren't worth the work to clean up.

I had a list once, but it became pretty worthless when I didn't remember anymore if I counted the doubles or not. I'm guessing that I have around 200? XD

 my Arena wishlist is important otherwise I'd have no idea who I need to get. I have a list of my head Canon but not individual items. I have not been too scientific about it.

For me I use guide books, and check ponies off as they show up/ come in. That way I know who I have, and I update the want lists to keep track as well.

I forgot to mention before that in addition to my google doc I use the mlpmerch checklist http://data.mlpmerch.com/checklist/70/
It's not really as accurate as my personal list though because I have a couple hybrids and only have a few accessories, etc.

I don't keep count religiously, but I do know who I do and don't have. I'll do a head count every so often when I get curious.

I voted "I know the exact number of ponies in my herd". But, if I'm being honest my excel file isn't up to date. But I know which ponies need to be added.

I'm one of the rare people out there that has less than ten ponies in my herd, so it's easy for me to know which ponies I have and which ones I don't have.  :P
