Braid spray and MLP hair?
« on: August 05, 2016, 09:23:27 PM »
Has anyone ever tried braid spray on ponies? Its a product for textured human hair and its recommended to keep American Girl hair in order. It might possibly help with messy but not too messy curls? I somehow managed to lose my bottle without even opening it after having it for like a month so I don't know if I can give it a shot myself.

Yeah.... it doesn't really work as well on the nylon MLP hair.  It doesn't absorb into the hair like it does with AG dolls.  It gets sticky or oily and picks up dust.

At the Pony Fair two years ago in the Photography Lesson (which was amazing) the Presenter mentioned Wig Spray to control the fly aways.  It's been something I've been meaning to buy since then, but haven't been around any local wig shops to buy some.

I have used many a product on "test" ponies over the years (i.e. dont worry...those ponies were all then fabulously atired in pony wear and are the "pony models" of my collection...the envy of all the others :P) some of them to great success, some of them to interesting failure. But I would not recommend using anything like this on a pony you want to ensure does not experience future issues. Nylon hair can react oddly to certain products when combined with heat or UV or other environmental conditions - and we do not know what it could break down over the years; we havent had enough time to be confident of no problems.

There are enough products you can wash in/wash out or simple treatment methods that should tame wild hair. American Girls are made of high quality kanekalon which, as you know, reacts and is designed to be treated differently.

I wish there was conditioner made for doll hair.  I don't understand why human conditioner works on nylon hair.  Wig conditioner is the closest thing I've found, but it's not made for nylon either.

It doesnt work the same way as it does on human hair...you can have the same success rate with things like baby oil as you will with conditioner. :) Its just that nylon hair reacts well (detangles) when oiled which is essentially what the conditioner does.

I've had pretty good success with Armour All's Son of a Gun vinyl treatment - it's actually for boat seats but it DOES work on doll hair!  Not so much on ponies, again, different plastics in the hair, but for dolls, the Armour All's been pretty good!
