Super late G1 brag and some advice needed!
« on: July 10, 2016, 09:13:40 PM »
So super late with this brag, but after five-ish years of being a Pony fan/collector I finally have my hands on my first few G1 Ponies: Bowtie, Blossom, Sundance, Princess Primrose, and Gingerbread!

This was the first time I've seen them in person and I honestly wasn't prepared for how cute (and big!) they actually are??? There were many nose boops and girlish squeals of delight as I took them all out of the envelope.

Also, may I ask for some restoration/cleaning advice? Poor Gingerbread has a pen mark on her neck and what I think might be Pony Cancer on random bits of her body and on her face. The ones on her face actually look like freckles! I'll try and post a picture sometime!

Any tips on how to clean her up a bit? I have some magic eraser but I'm not sure if that will do anything?

Most important advice I can give: Do. Not. Try. To sunfade. Gingerbread. It will end badly.

Other than that, magic erasers are probably a good way to go ;) Or you could try carefully rubbing with nail polish remover that has acetone in it. Be sure not to get it on her symbol, eyes, or blush, though.

Congratulations on your nice pony package and have lots of fun with cleaning them up :)

Echoing what Bommels said - DO NOT SUNFADE GINGERBREAD!  Unfortunately, other methods might not get the pen off but may fade it a little, but sunfading her will give her an irreversible sunburn :(  A friend of mine just sent me her childhood ponies and as soon as I opened the box and saw her Gingerbread I knew she'd been well loved in the outdoors as she is so burnt :(  Acetone and magic eraser might help though.

Gingerbread is really prone to cancer but as others have said you can't -_- sunfade her.  I'd give her a careful once over with a magic eraser avoiding paint, eyes and blush etc. This might get the biro off and brighten her up because it's a mild abrasive so takes a fine layer off.

A sunburn? This I gotta see... :satisfied:

No, seriously now. With sunburn you mean the brown-ish taint on a white pony right? Or what is Pony sunburn? Cause I honestly never heard of it before.

Congratulations with your new ponies. You choose some real beauties

Poor Gingerbread is prone to that unfortunately.

I second the magic eraser for the pen mark.

As for PVC breakdown, well you could try an oxyclean bath to lighten it a smidge, but don't get her eyes wet or it'll take off the coating.

If your not fussed about it, you can use paint to cover the spots. I mean it's just white.

Can't wait to see pictures of your girls.

It sounds like you have some very nice new G1 ponies.  There are some great tips for cleaning them up in this thread too. Tthis thread in the Corral has some more pointers if you are still stuck: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,288060.0.html

I often just paint over cancer spots, sometimes I don't even try to match the colour I just add stuff...

Cheers, yes she was otherwise really nice so I kept her. I don't have a double iether and not planning to upgrade. I'm really glad I learned to customise because I don't mind restores as long as the pony looks great and is in stable condition.
