My bf is trying to talk me into getting the ps4 version. (I can't control a mouse and keyboard at the same time, so pc is out.) He seems convinced i'll love it, but I'm not sure I want to pay for it + PSN so we can use it.

Try watching some videos - it's hard to explain MC's appeal beyond virtual unlimited Legos, but easier to demonstrate.  If it's your kind of game, you'll likely be able to tell.  Also, if you have a mouse with a good number of configurable buttons, it's not too hard to set up MC to be completely mouse driven, I've done it when I injured my left wrist. You need buttons for Shift, Inventory, Forward and Jump, scroll wheel for changing the hotbar selection. It's a bit clumsy for melee since you can't back up without turning around, but it /is/ doable. 

I got into MC during very early Beta, and have probably spent more hours on it than any other game I've owned.  Currently playing heavily a modded pack (Regrowth) off the FTB launcher.  Don't think I'd enjoy the console versions too much, after so many years with the PC version. "Back in my day, we didn't have beds! You had to hole up for the night and it was black as tar if you didn't manage to find coal for torches!"

Yes. I have been playing for about 5-6 years (PC version). I have a private server with some friends, which I've been a part of for about 2 years.

I started a new world . . . I was determined that THIS TIME I wouldn't lose my map.  But then I was out too late at night and got blown up by a creeper.  I respawned at my bed, but I had still been in the process of building my house and there was another creeper IN THE HOUSE and I instantly got blown up again.  Which destroyed my bed.  Not having a bed, I respawned in a random location and it took me a long time to find my way back.  Another map gone!
