What Are Your Pony Brushing Combing Tool Preferences? How do you comb?

This is my very first attempt ever to cleanup a baity eBay pony:  Windy!  I used an old soft toothbrush to detangle some, then fingers, then my regular (for myself) comb then I rinsed the whole thing off and used powder cleanser with the toothbrush over the whole pony but very light on the symbols which were already pretty worn and I might have made them worse.  There was some persistent grime on one cheek and the tops of the ears and especially the tip of the horn so I used a glop of cleanser on my thumb to really get into those and then I rinsed then used coconut conditioner and combed out with the regular comb and rinsed, then added more conditioner and rinsed slightly then combed, dried the pony with a paper towel and combed until dry...I think I spent 2 hours on this dang thing, how does it look?? ok for a beginner, or ?

The tail really is frizzed especially in the last inch; does anyone have a suggestion about what I can do to correct it other than trimming it off??  Thanks everypony!

Just about to see if my status changes after this post (you know what I mean lostpony!)...might have to say goodbye to my winter ponies : (

Anyway, to answer the OP's question, I use a normal, cheap, plastic comb and plenty of conditioner. If necessary I will leave the conditioner on overnight (sealed in a plastic bag to prevent it drying out) and try removing the tangles again the next day. I use a very gentle technique with the comb starting at the ends and working up to the roots. That way, the knots are easier to remove and it minimises the risk of frizz.

Thanks for the compliment applejackbunny!  I am starting to figure out how to get my droid to focus a little better too, still not as good as a real camera though.  Yes I combed from the ends and worked my way up based on combing my own frizzy long hair which unlike these ponies mine grows back!

I got most of my cleaning procedure from WingsofMasquerade, thanks for the great advice, it worked well!

Next time I will try AJB's extra conditioning steps and see if that helps!  Thanks for the great advice!

I've always gotten by with a plain ol cheap plastic everyday comb! (The kind with a pointy handle and fine teeth) And lots of conditioner.

This is my method exactly.  I tend to just throw the combs away that come with the ponies.

lostpony - for frizzy hair, this is what I do: Wet the hair and comb conditioner through it. Don't rinse. Separate into small sections. Take a flat iron/curling iron (I find my curling iron works better than my flat iron so experiment a bit!) and run it down the length of the tail. You'll hear sizzling, but it's just the water. You can do one or two passes before having to re-wet the hair. Keep at it until the frizz is gone. It's a pain, but can really work wonders. Here's my Little Giggles. I gave up towards the end of her tail but got most of the frizz out.

Same for me - they're sturdy, disposable if the teeth break (though they're way tougher than G1 combs or brushes) and do a decent job.  I like the thin, tapered tines.

I use three main combs.  I start with one from a giant pinkie pie (I presume), with huge rounded teeth.  then I move to a standard G4 playful pony comb... and then I finish with a plastic baby comb with teeny tiny teeth.  I post pics later!

I use(d) one of those Strawberry Shortcake Blow Kiss dolls combs. Just the right size for pony hair with the perfect teeth!

I moved in January and can't find my pony cleaning supplies bag. I hope they didn't get thrown away by accident! I miss that comb! Anybody have an extra they don't want?

I've always used old Barbie brushes. They work better than any MLP brush I've ever had lol. They're sturdy, abundant (for me at least), easy to wash (it's surprising how dirty they can get when cleaning up played-with ponies, G1's especially!) and as a silly bonus, they come in a million fun colors. =P

To detangle I generally try to do small sections and of course start at the tips. Original curl is tricky and even after all these years it still makes me nervous and I avoid messing with it if possible, lest I ruin it! But when I do have to deal with it, I just go slow and carefully and do it in tiny sections. And if the hair has to be washed, I do my best to use minimal shampoo. I only use lukewarm or cold water.

I use cool/lukewarm water and that mint tea tree conditioner (shampoo only on a as needed basis!), and go over tiny sections when dealing with original curls.

Barbie brushes were my go-to before a move - now I've taken to using G4 tiny brushes and a regular brush ( I was desperate) . Recently purchased a smalll tooth pointy end comb and will see how that goes during spa day today.
