Can Dust Harm A Pony?
« on: March 03, 2016, 07:53:05 PM »
Hi everyone~

So this may be a ridiculous question, but my ponies are out on display in my college room, and I have to wonder..

Can dust damage them?

I know ponies can get pindot and all sorts of junk from being truly dirty, and while I clean my room regularly I tend to not handle my ponies too too often, to protect styled hair and prevent getting fingerprints and oils on them. If they were left in the open for an extremely long period of time and really gathered dust, could they get pindot?

This just crossed my mind, and I know its unlikely, but sometimes I wonder just how sensitive that 80's vinyl really is..

I guess my question is, how do you guys keep your ponies dust free?

My ponies are in a China hutch with glass doors. Not airtight or anything uber, but keeps the dust off. You could buy clear vinyl sheets at a hardware store and hinges if you have regular/book shelves.

I only have the common shelves, without glass, so I dust them one time per month, I haven't other choice

I don´t know how it could demage the pony, I hope it doesn't turn the white plastic so grey, because the majority of my ponies are white

I think dust is just dirt; it needs to be cleaned, but it won't to any actual harm to the plastic. I couldn't find anything indicating that anyway.

Me I just keep em in a glass-fronted/barrister's bookcase and dust 'em occasionally

Pin dot may be an issue of dust is left sitting on ponies for a long time, but I'm talking extreme amounts of dust by that, haha!  I would guess this would be more of an issue of the ponies get warm, because of the way vinyl gets softer as it warms up.

i dust the ponies often :) now that i have a better  controlled pony room

Dust can harm a pony if the pony is in extreme heat because the plastic will soften and the dust will become stuck in it.

i had a few bait ponies in my old bedroom and it go to 40 C and the dust just stuck on them

Living in the UK, I had never heard of or come across dust + heat = pindot xD We don't get hot enough here as a general rule >.>.

But I keep my cupboard doors closed and the cabinets too. Dust can still sneak in, and does...but washing the pony sorts it out. I recently had to bath a few TEs and they came up really pretty, even though it's been a while since I've had time to bath a lot of my ponies.

Ditto with mine. Even though they are in a case. I worry about mold more than anything.

My ponies suffered from pin dot when I had them on shelves 5 years ago. For me it was not heat and dust. It was dust and damp/mould issue causing pin dot mould half of my collection suffered from pin dot mould. Lesson learnt. No more ponies on the shelf.

As others have said, you should make sure to dust them down with reasonable regularity :)  Better safe than sorry. The worst thing dust can damage is really hair; sometimes brushing hair which has dust in it can make it a bit brittle and cause it to break. So just make sure to shake it out (:P) before brushing through.
