Crimping
« on: February 29, 2016, 11:35:57 PM »
I see a lot of people ask about crimping so when she posted this video I figured I'd share it here. The first doll she does has nylon hair which is what MLPs have.

I scrounged goodwill bins for months for a working crimper. It's a priceless device for making totally 80's pony hair!

I once received a MH doll (Bonita Femure, which is funny because she's in the background) whose hair was crimped. I tried desperately to boil wash those crimps out, but they are here to stay haha But now I think they are cute.

When I was itty bitty, I used to have those early 90s ponies, and I remember being in love with this one pony in particular (I believe she was this dark coral, or reddish colour) whose hair was crimped. It was blonde with a blue streak, if I remember correctly.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I have a secret fondness for crimped hair xD

Oh man--I was born at about the tail end of the crimping fad, but I remember my mom having one well into my late childhood :P I didn't know you could apply that much heat to nylon hair without it melting!

Actually I don't have an 80s crimper but I still have one that works and changes handles. I was just too scared to use it on my ponies.

Sunsplasher, maybe? Sunglory's the one with a blue streak, but she's definitely yellow.  All three are so very 80's, despite being early ninety releases.

You can achieve a crimped effect without heat by leaving in small tight braids for a while and then taking them out.

You can also boil-set those suckers if you're impatient.  :)

I've crimped pony hair and wig hair and have had success. Just gotta wait for the crimper to get up to heat and take it in small amounts. :o)

I just looked on amazon- and it turns out you can still buy a crimping iron!  I probably won't do it- but was tempted there for a second...

If someone is seriously considering getting one I honestly would recommend goodwill bin picking. Mine maybe cost .10 cents. (Some of those hair tools can be crazy expensive.) If I know that someone is looking for one I would keep an eye out when I go digging...

Braiding is close but not quite. Waves done with braids don't have those sharp points.

Years ago I found the same crimping irons I had as a little girl...used to love those things! Because they had nice ceramic plates they still worked all these years later. A certain baity Rocking Beats pony quickly proved they worked perfect on her hair! :)

If not using a baity pony, I will admit I would prefer to braid for a crimp rather than use irons, but its great that they can be used if need be.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
