Maybe I'm too paranoid but..

Does anyone else internally cringe at the idea of collecting with a gf/bf and only getting one of each. I know it would be a good bonding thing, and maybe its because of my parents divorce but like.. I dont want to fight for custody of my ponies ya dig?

My boyfriend hates my collection and tries to convince me to sell them any chance he gets, so no worries about pony custody for us!

I never worry about it. If we both like the same thing, I get one for each of us. Plus I'm not so spiteful that I would ever demand half of someone else's crap, especially if I bought it for them.

Sometimes, yeah that happens.  But that's just part of a relationship if it ends up going that way.  If you collected dishes with your loved one, then you'd be just as upset to split up everything in that collection too!

Maybe it's because I'm sure my husband and I will be together forever, but I've never thought about this much. We have our separate collections, but we do both collect Pokémon and we only get one of each item between the two of us.

I guess if you're really worried, it's best to being it up with your partner? Communication is key!

Yeah, I made a huuuuge mistake with my boyfriend of five years (which now, five years after we broke up, seems like such a short time). We were/are huuuuuge video game fanatics and collectors. I don't know if there is anyone out there who is as crazy about video games as the two of us. Sometimes we would each buy our own copies of games, but usually one or the other of us bought each game. When we broke up, I had a lot of backtracking to do to refill the humongous hole in my collection. Even now I'm still trying to find some of the more obscure PS2 games that I didn't buy back when they were affordable. And one of the worst things was our digital collection of songs for Rock Band. For some idiotic reason, we thought it would be a "good idea" to put all of our song downloads onto his account. That's at least $100 down the toilet on my end right there.

Thankfully we didn't collect anything else together. Just games. And thankfully most of the games I needed were pretty easy to find for a good price. There are just a few I regret not buying myself when I had the chance.

I know a few collectors who have collected with their s/o.  But it's not super common for sure.  My hubby is tolerant of my collection.  Supports me having something I love to do, wishes it wasn't spend our money on toys.  Haha.

But I guess there's always the chance even if you don't collect together that your ex will be vindictive and want half your stuff just to be mean.  So may as well just buy one and try and get along I guess.

Don't share something with someone if you don't want to, or don't feel comfortable with.

At least a pony collection would sort of easy to split up compared to larger hobbies like car racing. But even that is better than owning a pet with someone else.

I mean, maybe I'm just saying this because I haven't found "the one", but I am not very good at sharing, probably because I grew up with little siblings who I was forced to share with. So what's mine is mine, and if you like my ponies, I'll help you find some of your own! But uh, these guys are still mine.
