Momma Had A Pony & The Head Popped Off! What is strange heads off horse? w/PIC

Ok you've seen "styling heads" for Barbie AND her horse.
But what could possibly be the reason for a horse / pony with an eject button for its head?
(horse/pony/doll accessories can come here, right?)

Funny story:
At a flea market, I'm lookin' for horses (as always) I pick this one up, because the pose is kind of different with the turned face & all. I find the button on the chest. I wonder if it will play music / make noise /light up....so I push it to see if it works and the head goes shooping off and flies on the ground in front of the vendor and I'm like "............. 

I mean you're not expecting a horse to have a 'blast my head off' feature like some space robot action figure. And yet here it is:

It has 'mattel' in 1 leg, but I tried searching for it & came up with nothing. There are literally a gazillion mattel horses because of Barbie, and it doesn't seem like anyone has cataloged them where I can find. Vendor called it a pony (looks more horsey) and didn't know what it was either, or why it does that.

There MAY be a symbol on one side, like a planet looking thing. Or, it could be a sticker remnant from some kid. I didn't care that it was frizzled and beat up because I like customizing hard plastic horses. Also, the tail crown pops out, it's actually a peg with hair set in it. The only thing I can think of is that this poor girl came with many heads / expressions / tails & you were meant to mix match them? But still, they shaped the clips such that the head actively springs off its neck.

I wanted to at least learn about it before customizing, or maybe someone wants it if it's rare (doubtful) I was wondering about doing maybe a 'the headless horse' theme where it's a ghost horse and you can take the head on and off as part of the spooky character.

That has got to be one of the strangest toys I've seen, though I admit the concept that Matel was going for is interesting with the interchangeable heads/tails, but the fact that you can rocket a head off of a body is just mind blowing. xD

That's brilliant search work! I have no idea how you found it, but thank you! I went thru sooo many not-that-horses turning up nothing. Mystery solved, that's awesome...it's too bad the lady didn't have the spare head. It would be fun/wacky to customize 'just a head'.

I didn't know they made horses but I've seen the Barbie heads pop up at the thrift store on rare occasion.  It's creepy, IMHO, to be going through a plastic bag of toys and just have this random Barbie head pop out at you.
