HELP! How do I make those perfect pony curls?
« on: December 24, 2015, 11:46:40 AM »
Try as I might, I cannot get my ponies curls to come out like I see in so many of the pictures online! What is your secret? I've seen a bunch of different techniques online. Is there a certain type of curlers I should buy? What am I missing?  :what:

STRAWS! I wet the pony's hair, brush it flat, wrap it neatly in a moist paper towel, and then wrap all of that around a straw. Secure on the top and bottom of the straw with a bobby pin (crimped side inside the straw and straight on the outside.) You can then dip them in boiling water for a second a couple of times if you want to boil set them or just leave them to dry. I have multiple curled ponies now and they always turn out fabulous using straws.

It's super simple to do and you have a lot of options when it comes to the kind of curl you can get. It all depends on the size of your straw and the way you wrap the curls/position the straws to dry. It's really fun to experiment. My Beach Ball was very frizzy so I tried to curl her multiple times but her white streak wouldn't hold it. I tried to boil one big curl in her mane to see if it would help the frizz and her mane is seriously FLAWLESS now. Straw curls FOR LIIIIIIIIIIIFE. lol

Awesome! I'll have to experiment more with straws when I return from my Christmas trip to California! Thanks guys! :D

If anyone has in progress pictures of the process I'd sure love to see them!

I've never taken any, but I have a bunch of ponies coming who will need a total spa re-haul so I'll be sure to take some step by step photos to post here and on my collector blog. :D

here are several examples of my attempts at pony perming.. I would also recomend going to your local dollar store and finding the cheepest conditioner you can.. the more petrolium in it the better.. its REALLY good for the plastic hair. any how

I want to try and restore factory styling to my G1 ponies, but my G3s might all have to end up with curls after seeing those photos, Roseprincess, lol

Ponies have brushable hair for a reason and YOU CAN STYLE THEM ANY WAY YOU WANT! DO NOT BE A SLAVE TO THE FACTORY!

I was wondering if adding the paper towels adds something special to the curl? I have always done curls without the paper towels and wondered if there were be a different effect if I added paper towels first.

I use towels to keep the ends of the hair in place so they don't get all funky. If they're left out they don't always set right for me, so if you don't have any problems like that I don't see any reason for you to use them :)
