The MIB/MOC/MIP G1 Discussion Thread
« on: November 29, 2015, 07:52:30 AM »
We've had a bit of discussion on other threads regarding all of us that have G1's (non-Nirvana) that are still in the original packaging. We're trying to brainstorm a way to get this data all collected into one place. I'm willing to get the ball rolling on requesting data. I'm happy to maintain a master thread here, but I don't have a website host for image compilation *if we want to go that far.

What's out there and how many of each are owned by collectors?

We all know that mylittlewiki.org has some fronts and backs of packaging. This website is a great resource. Who else has back card websites that are still alive on the web?

There are a lot of us that would LOVE to know what's out there.

What I think would be helpful with this request is a listing of all known ponies that were released either:

In Box-MIB
On Card-MOC
In Package (or bagged)-MIP
With playset in baggie

Doing this by year sounds logical (the most comprehensive listing is from mylittlewiki.org which is below):

First request, what is this list missing for US store/MO/Euro (non-nirvana) releases?
Then, how was each released- MIB/MOC/MIP?

Then we will request counts/data by year.

The problem with following that timeline is that there are bugs in it. The Wiki is great but trying to slot the non US releases into a US timeline makes for mistakes and omissions.

For example, Collector Pose Bow Tie and Applejack belong to 1985 (year 3, we call them Groom and Style), not 1984. And the US had the long haired versions of AJ and BT here, so those are not rereleases but technically different ponies. Ditto Medley, Firefly for this 1985 release.

Additionally though, I'd like to request that we don't collate by a US dating system. It makes more sense with global ponies to look at it just year by year (as in 1982, 1983, 1984) and then include in there what was sold. As we are dealing with multiple packaging styles, would it matter if some sets were duplicated?

For example, Raindrop and Nightlight are two of a set of six ponies, and they belong to 1987, so listing them with 1985 doesn't make a lot of sense. But listing them under 1987 as a set will mean adding another version of Moonstone, etc. But she is different, so I think she ought to be listed as such.

Or alternatively, we just do it by wider sets, so "Twinkle Eye Ponies", for example -which covers 3 years in the US and 2 in Europe), into which people could list which pony they have, what release it's from and what style of card/language of card they have.

I really want to avoid separating European sets out from the timeline because the ponies are all one mainstream timeline, and it's never so clear cut as "UK" vs "US" release.
In fact, I almost think exclusive is irrelevant when collecting MIP images, since pony packaging will be exclusive to a country or group of countries irrespective of whether the pony itself was global. In the end we're looking at packaged examples of ponies, not what pony was sold where...right? And separating the European/UK from the US makes no sense when some of the North American ponies were exclusive to North America and yet they are listed in with the globally released ponies O.o.  It creates a really false and muddled picture of what was sold where and how.

We might also be dealing with multiple names - for example not just UK/US release names but if a pony is carded in German, then it's name would be the German pony name...

Hmm... So how about we break it down and just start with 1982. I'll modify the list and ask for input for who was released?

Probably. 1982 should be quite easy though, with just the collector ponies?

That's the question, any other other releases at this time on different cards with different names between here and Europe that aren't nirvana? hahahaha

As far as I know the UK began in 1983. Can't speak for any other country though.

Resurrecting this thread....

We all know that mylittlewiki.org has some fronts and backs of packaging. This website is a great resource. Who else has back card websites that are still alive on the web?

Lady Twilight has put together a great source for backcards.  Scroll down to "Packaging Items".

It's really good for the US stuff, not so much for Europe and the UK. There are some UK ones on there but it's on the same page as Argentina etc which is confusing and there are a lot of gaps...

Between UK/Europe there are some package art styles that are the same and some that are distinctly different. Lady Twilight's link separates card styles that are the same for the UK into Germany because of the language - which is relevant but implies the designs were only sold in German language form and that is just not the case :)

Basically, "Non US" is not a category.

Seriously, someone come to my house and you are more then welcome to photograph MOC/MIB/MIP and scan my backcards. :)

I do agree with Taffeta though, don't mix in non-us, it gets really muddy. :) US only is pretty easy to find collecting photographs online (I've done so for years for my own ID purposes).

True UK packages/list is harder. and there seemed to be a basic euro line plus unique things specific to one area that are not quiet special enough to be considered "nirvana".

Why not having those of us who want to share list what MOC/ MIB we have and then adding those up? That way we could at least roughly see how many are still in existence? It would be sooooooooo interesting!

Meh, Nirvana as a label is overrated when it comes to packaging, as some of the UK packaging is harder to find than many Nirvana packages are. xD.

I just find "Non-US" an offensive distinction. It implies everything that isn't American is not only all the same but inferior as it is being classed by it's non-Americanness, instead of by its own merits. We're a knowledgeable enough community now not to classify as US and non US any longer.

In reality, even "Europe" can't be used as a classifer as different countries are different.

Ponies on North American release (generally American rather than Canadian) cards are the most common MIP ponies in general. Even here in the UK, you see North American package style MIP ponies on UK Ebay from UK collectors who have bought them from the US and who are reselling them.

There are some particular sets in the UK that are extremely rarely seen MIP, to the point where only one or two examples are known to be in collector hands. There are some UK packaged items which remain unknown/unconfirmed as none have surfaced.

There are also some European issues that use the North American card style with a different language text. In some cases, there can be two versions of the same set release in the same country - for example Germany had Watercolor Sea Ponies on North American style card in German and also the same set on European style bordered card, also in German.

So in terms of classification, I'll go back to what I said above. Can we please look at this without the blinkers of US/non US and look at each set/release as an entity depending on the style of card?

I do agree. I personally consider the US release as the "core line" which many are shared in many places with slight changes to packaging, but contents are identical. Core because ponies came from a US designers mind and the company is headquartered in rhode island. I am still working on placing ponies that are different, or were packaged with different accessories and correctly labeling them to the correct area. It's complicated sometimes so I eventually give up and put that project on the backburner. :(

But everyone understands "non-us", "other countries" maybe? and our line can somewhat be lumped in too, so I count myself there. was the same as the US line, but our packaging is obviously different, and there was the odd small change elsewhere not as many as collectors were led to believe in the past. there were a few bits/ponies that were assumed to be Canadian variants. kind of like in the 90's and find a weird pony here not on dream valley and it's automatically a "UK" pony. :P

For me, although the HQ of Hasbro is RI, during the 1980s, there's significant evidence that Europe was acting highly independently, and I believe some of that distribution was based with Hasbro UK. The concept of MLP was an American idea, but there are so many ponies invented by people outside of the US that I don't think it is just a US concept any longer. Current MLP is, yes. Past MLP, not so much. For example, all the North American early unicorns had the pattern of streak in the hair, but Gypsy broke that trend, had single block hair and is the only unicorn with freckles, as well.

All the Nirvana lines that have their own distinct characteristic now make it even more ridiculous to lump everywhere outside the US together.

I think the core line for each collector is relative to where they grew up, too. I can't ever think of Dancing Butterflies as a "US pony" because I had her as a six year old. I genuinely believe the core line are the "global" release ponies like her, irrespective of their package differences and name variations, whereas ponies only sold in North America are N. American exclusives, ones only sold here are UK exclusives, ones sold across Europe are European exclusives, and so on depending on country/ies of origin.

The core line is the global line. It doesn't matter where they were invented, since Hasbro in RI had nothing to do with the creation of a lot of the ponies sold in other parts of the world.

And in terms of the list of sets, at least for the early ponies over here, the sets went like this:

1983 FF ponies as above

1984 -
Blossom
Cotton Candy
Seashell
Bubbles
Bow Tie
Applejack

1985
Cherries Jubilee (curly hair)
Bow Tie (CP)
Applejack (CP)
Posey (pale symbol)
Lickety Split
Tootsie (Green)

1986
Gypsy
Honeycomb
Hopscotch
Snowflake
Cherries Jubilee (straight hair)
Posey (dark tulips)

1987
Shady
Buttons (buttons and stars)
Buttons (buttons)
Gusty (painted symbol, green eyes)
Magic Star
Wind Whistler (pink and blue whistles)
North Star

I've grouped them by year and therefore the package style they featured in that year. I have images of all the cards for the above except the FF card which may be same as the North American one.

That's a starting point at least? If those are matched against similar in the North American line, and in Europe etc?

I sectioned all those out because over here they were all sold under the umbrella of My Little Pony. We had no early unicorn and pegasus set, though, pre Gypsy.

I'll send you what I have thus far. Taken from my own list, but mine is a mess (on mine I listed all ponies, hadn't gotten to some of the playsets yet and included all correctly) I edited a version for a friend - but removed some I knew she wouldn't buy. they are still listed (by set or name) just not a breakdown of acc.
