Advice on Cleaning G1 Porcelains?
« on: November 25, 2015, 01:36:22 PM »
Hello there!  I recently found my grail porcelain, sleeping Applejack, at a flea market for $3.  She is in lovely condition, but could use a little cleaning.  I have never owned a porcelain before and don't want to ruin it.  Since they are somewhat porous, is it okay to clean them with a little soap and water?  Is there a better way to clean them?  Is there anything that absolutely shouldn't be used...like a Magic Eraser, etc.?  Thanks so much in advance! :)

I've used a soft toothbrush and mild dish soap to clean and get dust from the creases. I rinse under a gentle stream of cold water. So far so good... unless there are paper stickers present, then you need to be super careful.

I use a damp q-tip to gently clean the creases. It takes a little while but I'm afraid to put them under running water.

Please post photos once she's cleaned up, will you? I dream of finding the porcelain figures in the wild, as they're always so expensive on eBay! I'd love to see what this one looks like.  ^.^

I've wondered this myself. I have two porcelains that I've found second hand that were a tad grubby. I haven't cleaned them for fear of fading/damaging the paint...

I did the same with mine :)  I agree it took a while to clean but was gentle and seemed to work well for me

Thanks so much for the advice, everyone!  I think Q-tip and water it is! :)

I've found water doesn't clean ground in dirt sufficiently. I'd maybe do like ponyqueen did and take a mild soap mixture and use that on the Q-tip.

Personally I sprayed some windex on a tissue and gently wiped small areas at a time, worked like a charm!  ^.^
