Restoring Star Hopper's mane
« on: November 21, 2015, 10:59:01 AM »
My rather abused Star Hopper has a few plugs cut from the beginning of her mane.  I'm thinking that I'd like to replace them, but I'm having a hard time with the tinsel aspect.  Do you think it would look very bad to just do plain hair?  Or would it just be a whole lot better to add tinsel?  (Not sure when I'll actually get around to do this, but I'm thinking about it while I try to clean up/restore the rest of her body.)

You know, I think it's totally up to you! I think the tinsel looks good on Sparkle Ponies along with the glitter, but I've never rehaired with tinsel before so I don't have any experience the actual act. Whatever you think will look best, as she is your pony. ;D

That is up to you,but I think forgoing the tinsel might remove some of her beauty, only because she's not a solid colored pony. (And I love tinsel hair) I know there's a rehairing guide on the mlp restoration project website if you wanna redo the tinsel. But I've no doubt she'll still be pretty without it if you think youd like her more without it. She is Star Hopper after all. ^.^

Sulky metallic thread is nearly identical to G1 tinsel.  You might see if there is a similar/matching color.  I buy mine at Jo-Ann fabric stores.

I like when ponies are restored to their original glory. I'd say go with the tinsel.  It's easy enough to work with and you don't have a lot of plugs to replace. You may even be able to get a remnant chunk of matching hair for her (a tail or dollyhair) by asking over on the customs forum... Good luck with your project. :o)

I took a closer look at her mane (I'd been focused on the damage done to her body) and realized that a lot of the tinsel there has been cut or broken so that it's shorter than the rest of the mane, so it's just not going to look right.  Now I'm thinking of doing a complete rehair.  Since I've already started some customizing on the body, she's definitely not going to look original when this project is finished, although she's still going to be Star Hopper.  :)  She'll just be my personal variant.  So I might go with a different hair color altogether, but at this point, I'm thinking I'll put tinsel in it.  We'll see how it all ends up.  :)

I'll be sure to show you.  :good:  I think working on her has gotten me hooked on customizing/restoring.  I was feeling sad this morning that I didn't have any other ponies in similar condition into which to breathe new life.   :yikes:

I know the feeling, you get such a rush from restoring a pony that you want more. :) It's really fun.
