Help me save Ringlet
« on: November 14, 2015, 05:44:27 AM »
So my herd of happiness consists of ponies that some people would pass over. I call my curio the cabinet of misfit toys and oddities. I just bought a Ringlet (she's not even here yet) and her description  said she needs cleaning on one side. I've included the photo from her ebay sale  of the side in question. Does anyone here have any suggestions  as to how to clean her?

I am no expert, but I always start with a magic eraser. I have seen those take gross ponies to beautiful!  If that is ink though a magic eraser may not work. Acetone would be the next thing I would try. Avoid getting it on symbols and eyes though or they will be gone too!  If that fails, the next thing I would try is sunfading.  I have seen lots of great tutorials for sunfading that can instruct you on how to do that.

Thank you Amy-Q. I was thinking oxyclean  and a magic eraser. I'll have to see exactly  what the blueish substance is when she gets here.

Hopefully you can save her. Her mane looks pretty good though! :)
Also if you use OxyClean avoid the hair, from what I heard it can make it fall apart.

Do you have to soak her to use the oxyclean? If so, I'd skip it because with her tail mechanism, you can't really get the water out. Definitely don't take the head off unless you absolutely have to because it will break the mechanism.

I would do what Amy-Q suggested, except before acetone, try rubbing alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl seem to work about the same). It sometimes works on ink and doesn't usually hurt the paint.

I'd say avoid soaking her at all costs as Elisto has already mentioned. You could look at sunfading but wrap her up good, only exposing what you want faded, that shade most likely will fade along with the marks.

I don't think I've used it on a pony, but I've had really good luck using rubbing alcohol to remove ink on other plastic toys. It takes the ink off, but doesn't seem to do any damage to the paint or anything.

Alcohol will pull any recent ink out of the vinyl,  but you are likely going to have to sunfade a bit!  :) Depends on how long the staining substance has been on there.

Wow thank you everyone. I honestly  didn't expect such an out pour of assistance  and I'm truly greatfull. I definitely  won't be soaking her. Perhaps  what I can do is try a little of everything and see what will work best for her. I will have to look into sun fading (I don't know the process). Is there a tutorial  hopefully  video or one with clear photos as I'm a visual learner that you all would suggest?

Wrap her up in tinfoil and only expose the areas you want faded. Super easy. Rotate often and keep a good eye on her.

Awww...she has had a hard life but I am sure with you she has found a happy forever home. :) I dont have much to add expect to say that magic eraser really is the first thing to go for in these cases. Even if it does not remove everything and you need to follow up with rubbing alcohol, acetone or sunfading, it will remove the surface worst and get you a great start.

Good luck and I hope you share pictures of her all finished up :)
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
