Tea is taking over! So where can I store it?
« on: October 18, 2015, 09:33:34 PM »
Tea drinkers, I am in need of some serious help. My fiancé and I have entered the wonderful world of tea pretty recently (as a kid I couldn't stand the stuff) and we may have hit the ground running. There are just so many wonderful flavors!

But now... I have no idea where to store it all, as we have about fifty bags of loose leaf tea just kinda hanging out in our kitchen (a near by Ren fair had a old fashioned tea store.... we were doomed! Lol)

I'm heading out tomorrow to see what I can find in way of a tea storage and organization device, so I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas on what to look for, or if you could share pictures of your tea stashes to help give me ideas, since I'm looking for something cute and easily accessible. Or any good tea suggestions! :D

Tea boxes with sealable lid, so no insects can come inside.

Most tea places recommend jars for storing loose tea - sealed, non-see-through to prevent light, don't store near heat.

Some of our tea is in tins, some in sealed bags from the store, and we also picked up some small spice jars to hold the smaller samples we have (the jars are clear, but stored in a cupboard so there's minimal light).

I have SO MANY tea tins from DavidsTea...And I pick up vintage tins when I find them while I'm out thrifting.  I also have several tupperware stacking containers filled with tea bags, lol

My husband stores his tea collection in tins as well. Trick is to keep them completely air-tight sealed, in a dark place. (same goes for coffee).

I'm going to second jars or tins in a cabinet if you want your tea to last.  I recommend typing in tea storage on pinterest.  That's what I'll be looking at for extra ideas if I ever have enough tea to need to worry about that.

We use square, stackable tins for our teas - they're not the most airtight, so clear plastic bags inside the tins is recommended.  They are perfectly dark and most importantly, don't waste as much space as cylindrical containers do.  We use temporary sticker labels on the outside to denote which flavours are where, which will save a lot of digging around when /someone/ buries the Earl Grey in the back again.  :awake:

I have tea tins for those I don't drink regularly, the ones that goes most are in their original bags and all are stored in darkness in a cabinett.

Ooo, thanks for all the info and ideas everyone! (I didn't know loose leaf should be kept in the dark!). I went out looking today and found some cute little tins that I think will work great for the short term, and I'll probably look in to getting a few bigger canisters for the teas that we have a lot of (I've got a love of peppermint and mulling spice lol). I even got a cute little box that looks like a treasure chest from hobby lobby today to store all the tins in ^^ It looks great in the kitchen.
