Wall mounted displays!
« on: September 08, 2015, 09:39:00 AM »
I'll finally be getting around to buying extra shelves for my pony room soon.  I have bookcases already, but I want some wall mounted shelves now.  I just want basic white ones to match what I already have.

Where do you guys get your shelves from?  How difficult are they to install?  I wanna see pictures of your displays, too!  Give me some ideas!

I built my own wall mounted shelf last year. It was made of 1/2" thick particle board (which I later discovered would have been better if I had used 3/4) I got at Lowe's.

Installation wasn't too hard, I actually did it myself. I don't really recommend it because it's rather inconvenient to hold a row of shelves in place with your head while you hold the drill in one hand and the screw in another. All you need is a power drill, some wall anchors, and a level.  I know Walmart will sell kits with wall anchors, screws, and a little drill bit for cheap.  The only difficult thing is that you need to be patient and take your time, since having the holes just a little off can make the shelves not sit level.

Do you have an Ikea nearby!? They have long floating shelves for $9 (22") and $15 (45" long) there with a lip on them if you want something basic! I buy the black ones but i think they also have white. They have lots of shelves there that can mount to walls, check online first! Im actually buying them for my zelfs soon, I think they are called Ribba? Very easy to install!

Also try thrift stores!!! You can find great secondhand ones there that are wood and just paint them white!

Another idea is those clear nail polish racks off ebay that easily mount to walls, but they wont match with the white shelves.

Another idea (as mentioned above) is to build your own! Home Depot and Lowes sells wood, all you need from there is screws or nails, a sander, and some paint!

*If you have drywall dont forget those little plastic drywall mounts you push into the drywall!!! They are like a dollar at walmart! I used them for my floating cubes with the tsum tsums and those long skinny floating shelves with my Pikachus on them. I have pics on my IG!

I cannot wait to see it when its done!! Your pony room is epic so far!

This is actually a china cabinet, I think? There's little indents for where the dishes are supposed to sit, but ... well, I got it for $20 at an antique fair, so who cares? :P

I used bookcases also from Ikea, they are white and called *BILLY* You could easily put the shelves on the height you want and even buy loose shelves!

I bought some IKEA besta shelves to mount on the wall... Then I got lazy and they are sitting on the floor. ;p luckily IKEA junk is versatile.

I love, love, love IKEA lack... And one day all of my stuff will be up high on many of those

I'll definitely stop by IKEA this weekend! I'd honestly love to make my own shelves if I had the time, but I'm all over the place lately so I'd probably never finish them, plus I had no idea the shelves were so darn cheap at IKEA!

Just check that your wall isn't made of stone. Boyfriend and I spent hours one pretty day last summer to drill the two holes needed for screws to hold my tiny wall shelf. After all that drilling we were left with holes not that deep, one of wich starts with a small crater and they aren't even leveled in the end even though we tried our most to make them so. :yikes: I'm sure our shelf will turn out fine tho!  :P

Yeah those ledges at Ikea are called "RIBBA Picture Ledges"
Target sells a very similar product in only a short length, for a bit more money than Ikea as well if you're desperate.
I was going to get those shelves for my fiances' G4 collection but our Ikea didnt have any in stock in which ever color it was we wanted. So we wound up going with the clear acrylic racks.
Back after at least 4 years away!

Our walls should be fine. :) I had to drill some holes for the curtains I put up last week and it was very easy.

I found the LACK shelves and I also found the EKBY ÖSTEN ones, both of which were said to be "most likely in stock" at the IKEA nearest me.  I'll check on Friday since I'll be out that way anyway.

I found these too, but they aren't in stock at the Pittsburgh IKEA.  I think they're pretty cute for a pony room, though!

edit: Ooooh, those picture ledges are neat and are in stock, too! *adds to list*

My dream plan to use Ikea's ALGOT system - so customizable and changeable later on.  :)

Oh wow! That's a neat system.  I'm looking through it right now, that might be good for my bedroom sometime in the future!

I went totally do-it-yourself and bought the tings in the pic, I don't know what they're called in English and can't fin a translation that feels right. But I drilled holes, put them on the wall, put on the handles and the boards which I painted myself. I can flex and adjust the hight whenever and doesn't have to worry about new drillholes :).

Eventually I realised three shelves were too few so I have added two more :).
