Hi there! Mixing paint to match original pony colors?
« on: August 25, 2015, 11:59:47 AM »
Hope I'm not spamming, but I've got a pony here with some chew marks- actually there's two.

One is a Brazilian Minty and the other is the Gingerbread pose Twist.
To fix this I'm going to have to stick some clay in their holes and paint over it, but
my knowlege on mixing paint or finding paints that match the pony's original colors
is completely non existant. Any expert customizers on here wanna teach me or help me out? :D

I'm a big fan of the website Golden Autumn, and it features a lot of Hasbro-based pony customs (Baby Sunbeam, Baby Pinwheel, etc.) They have a few tips on painting factory like custom ponies. Maybe some of the tips could apply here? http://www.angelfire.com/80s/babygoldenautumn/howto.html

Ooh, this is useful...too bad they don't have a paint recipe for Twist!

It's a lot of trial and error, really. Colors also tend to look a little different when dry so you'll probably have to test them on the pony itself til you get it right. It'd be easiest to buy a color of craft paint that's close to the pony's color and add small amounts of other colors until it's exact.

Yep, trial and error!! I've made numerous Hasbro inspired customs as well as repairs.

I've found paint does dry either slightly light or darker, so what looks like a match when the paint it wet might not be when its dry. Have a bait pony handy to test colours on too.

Also paint in daylight, artificial light can make things look a different colour.

This!
And the less colors that you mix, the less muddy the colors will be. Mix your colors on a plastic tray too so it stays workable.

Please dont take this the wrong way but I just want to say that with some ponies doing this may not add any value to them and in the case of your Nirvana it may even devalue them. Are the chew marks very bad?

Well I don't care about value. I just want them to look good.

It's reasonable advice to give heavy consideration to not altering a non-custom/FBR with filler and paint though - both of these materials tend to be chemically unstable, and may very well have side effects later down the line, such as dye seepage, even if they look fine right after being done. Where are the chew marks?  Sometimes it's easy to cover them over with a bit of hairstyling, or a cute hat or outfit.

Personally for me significant chew marks put the thing into the bait category for me even if it was a genuine Takara.

I am going to pop this over to the Customs forum for you then :) You will get the best advise there on paints for body paints.

Thanks so much, hathorcat!

For those asking about where the marks are:

Twist- ears and hooves

Minty- one hoof

And yes, they're pretty bad to me. :whoa:

Before you paint try softing the plastic with boiling water. I have been able to pop/ pull/nudge the plastic back into place where it was indented/ cut from bite marks.

I've had success worth boiling water too, good suggestion gotbunny ^.^

I think what Cat meant is that if you choose to part with them in the future, you most likely won't be able to sell them for what you paid for them  :)
