what can I use instead of straws to get fatter curls?
« on: August 09, 2015, 03:00:04 PM »
So I love doing straw curls on my ponies. love it! but I am wanting to try a slightly different look where the curls are larger, like the natural look of the sweetberry ponies. My straw curls are always thin in comparison! Ideas? thanks!

I use the boba straws as well.  Check your local Asian grocer.  That's where I get mine.  Or Amazon probably has them.  And yeah, just checked.  They have them.  Looks like $4 a pop for straws, but I get mine for a $1.  They're not the super nice ones, but given that I'm chopping them up and using them to curl pony hair?  Hahahahaha.

I bought a 50ct pack of "milkshake straws" from the grocery store for making tight wig curls, and I imagine they'd work just as well to make big pony curls too. :) They're 1cm in diameter and 23cm in length, so plenty of room for lots of hair. And they only cost like $2 for the pack. If you have a Kroger or Kroger-equivalent, they would either be in the utensil section or on the little hanging racks down the soft drink aisle. Or just PM me your address, and I'd be happy to send you a big fistful of mine. ;)

If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply near you, they sell really long rollers in various diameters.

These are what I use :)

Foam rollers are perfect (I use them in my own hair which is quite long so they are perfect for ponies). I know here you can normally pick up a packed of 10 or so for a couple of £ so I am sure something similar at a similar price must be purchaseable in the US somewhere.

Just curious how long do you leave the straws in their hair? And do you need to use a hair product to keep the curls?

No product...although you should be aware that curls will often fall out with time. Setting them with heat - boiling water and even a hairdryer on low heat are your best bet for holding them. Hair product can damage or even melt nylon sometimes so better to avoid if possible.

Walmart sells the thick 'milkshake/smoothie' straws cheap also. Usually hanging on a clip strip in the freezer or soda aisle.
My G3 grail is LS Pinkie Pie MIB.  If you have her for sale or trade, I WILL pay.

I normally leave them in a day or so.. However, over time the curls will turn into light/loose curls

I use these too :) They're great for the longer haired ponies like BnG's, Rainbow Curl etc

For all other ponies I use these when I don't want a tight curl that the straws provide
