Need sunfading advice
« on: July 31, 2015, 12:01:29 PM »
A couple of days ago I found a bunch of G1s at a thrift store, first time for me which was very exciting.
However, two of the girls had been given ink eye shadow and ink lipstick.

The third girl is just in bad shape over all. I've been reading through this thread about sunfading and decided to try it out:

http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,288994.0.html

Since they are all rescues, if I can save them big hooray and if I ruin them at least it was worth a shot.

So one of the ponies I found and rescued was a Birthday Pony, I got most of her "ink eyeshadow" out with magic eraser but being so close to her eyes, I didn't want to really get in there. Same with her "lipstick".
Does she have a purple upper lip I should protect by the way?

Since she is a white pony, I'm not overly worried, I figured i paint all her markings and eyes with white craft paint and hope the ink fades to white, is that the correct way to do it? Or should I cover everything but they "eyeshadow"?

Pics:

(This is a fun restoration process, I'm also planning on popping off her head to add new curled wrapping string to her tail!).

Then we have Mommy Apple Delight, who is also a white pony, so cover hair and paint all symbols/eyes:

However, then we have Starlight who's a darker pink pony. So I was thinking, do I wrap her up mostly in tinfoil, leave holes for the eyes, paint them with craft paint, to hopefully sunfade the ink out of the pink?

They have all had a deep cleaning to begin with.

I'm really super nervous and appreciate all advice I can get before I start

I've sunfaded a birthday pony with a name written across her entire side. Make sure you wrap up her hair good. You could cover what you don't want faded with the paint, I'd say go for removing the eyeshadow as well.

You've got the right idea for starlight.

None of the ponies you've mentioned are prone to burning, but remember when you have them in the window to rotate and check them often.

Good luck and remember to be patient, it may take days or even weeks with lesser sunlight for results to start showing. :)

I know there are some ponies that burn, but I can't remember which. Anyone?

Some of the ponies not suitable for sunfading can be found in the other sunfading guide; http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,288060.0.html :)

Neither of these girls are known to have sunburn issues so you should be fine. It looks like you have got everything planned exactly as they should be! I hope you let us see your progress. Good luck.

So two months have passed, and the process is almost done

Mother Apple Delight is finished, so I'm gonna rub the paint of any day now.

Before, look how yellow:

And after, a white pony again:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v79/c_sig/mlp/after01.jpg

My Starlight is taking a little longer, I think it's two more weeks or so if we keep having sun.

Before:

And after two months, still some blue left but much much less, it's working really well:

Then there's the Birthday Pony, and boy was that ink well into the plastic.
The before pic is with only one layer of paint over the cutie marks, it ended up with three layers.

And again, after two months. The "eyeshadow" is all gone, the "lipstick" is more stubborn, maybe another month or so left.

Thank you both!

It took me a while to forget they were in the window haha during the first weeks I checked them every other day, but now I just remember to turn them every now and then.

I've seen no burning, or any other signs of anything going wrong so far.

Fall is turning out sunny so far here in Sweden, so I hope to have them ready soon but the little ink that's left is putting up a good fight  ;)
