I was not expecting to see this when I logged onto the internet 

RIP Mr. Iwata, you were a true giant and visionary in the gaming world, you were always such a gracious person whenever you greeted fans. You will be missed. Thank you for creating some of the fondest memories of my childhood and the childhoods of millions of people world wide.

Yes, I just read about this over on IGN. Absolutely heartbreaking news. He gave so much to the gaming community through his creativity, compassion and honorable leadership of Nintendo. And 55 is so young to lose such a bright and joyous individual. I feel that Iwata is someone within the gaming community whose presence will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends in the midst of this tragedy.

I saw this just an hour ago and kept checking sources praying it was fake.

He was too young, he's done so much for Nintendo and gaming. He'll be greatly missed.

I saw about it through a facebook post from a musician I follow, who did a tribute piece for him, and the entire time I was thinking... well, I didn't know what I was thinking. I guess I just thought someone got their facts wrong, that there was a typo or something in their post. But then I saw it confirmed on IGN and it just broke my heart. I've grown up with Nintendo, and to lose one of the most brilliant minds behind it at such an early age is just horrible. My thoughts go out to his family, friends, and the whole gaming world

This truly is a sad day in gamer history. No matter what console has someone's loyalties, they still have to recognize Iwata's contributions. He will be sorely missed, may he rest in peace.

OMG. I could not believe the news! He is far too young!

I knew he had some health issues, but I had no idea they were this severe. It's so very sad. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He will be missed. It will hit hard again when the next Nintendo Direct comes around and he isn't there.

Saw this news on the Today Show this morning. Just... wow... died at the age of 55? Sad... Nintendo for me was the only gaming platform that I played with as a kid, from the original Game Boy to the Nintendo DS. Sorry to hear that the gaming industry lost such a wonderful and brilliant man. =(
