I wanted to officially announce my latest achievement:

I WROTE AN EBOOK
Yes, little old me. It is called Heather's Holiday Haiku, it is already a trilogy (because once I started, I seriously could not stop myself from haikuing up a storm, the poetry is seriously the only thing I like about Japan) and you can find it here:

It isn't a super serious book, just something to get my feet wet in the wide world of digital self-publishing. I heard that formatting ebooks was rough and I wanted to see what it was like because it sounded like a fun challenge. It was tricky but I am pleased with the result.

I did everything important myself:
- the writing
- the formatting
- the cover design (which I don't think looks TOO bad for an amateur)
- the photography
- the illustration

I dedicated it to my great aunt and today is her birthday (she's like 90 something) which is why I wanted to tell everyone today to make it extra special! The third ebook in the trilogy is dedicated to all of my friends aka you guys! Yes, I'm awesome like that! Anyway, I'd love it if you would all check it out and leave a review. Maybe you'll even learn something! Last I checked, all three were in the top ten of new poetry on Amazon! A small niche, true, but clearly I'm a sensation If you don't have a kindle, that's ok! Follow the link and it will tell you how you can read it on your phone or computer. I know it is quite silly but I'm really very proud

How did you find formatting your book? That's the part that has me the most nervous about my own upcoming release later this year.

Oh! Info about GoodReads:

Once your book has been added, you should be able to get an account (or use your existing one) to claim that and in doing so you should be able to get author rights on the site. This is useful because you can host giveaways if you make a print edition (I believe they need to be done within 6 months of the book's publication), you can see how many people are marking it to read, reviewing it, etc., you can link up your author website / blog if you've made one, etc. All very useful.

Thanks for the goodreads clarification, ladybastilla.

The formatting was a bit rough since I had never heard of carriage returns before.  I primarily relied on how to put your book on kindle book that amazon has out for free.  Their FAQ on the KDP site as well as the forums where you can ask questions were also helpful. 

What is weird is when you preview it during the publication process, your book will look fine on one device and weird on another.  If you correct it, it will look good on the second now but not on the first.  My advice to you is to try to get it 99% of the way correct on as many platforms as you can and then call it a day.  I'm a perfectionist so this was hard for me to do, but at some point you just have to step back otherwise you'll never publish it.

Eek, I've been super busy this weekend! Tomorrow I'll take a look at Goodreads and see if Amazon added your books yet. Usually Amazon auto adds book information, but I don't know how long that takes. So sometimes a GR librarian just needs to go in and add the info (which I started to do but didn't finish).
