washing mlp hair

What does everyone prefer to use on mlp hair?  I have some that need a good cleaning and was just wondering if anyone has some tried and true favorites?

I usually clean ponies all over with dish detergent (morning fresh is the brand we have here, dawn is another popular brand), including their hair to remove any major dirt.  Then I rinse and use lots of conditioner to comb through and get the knots out, then rinse again.

I just use general supermarket brands of conditioner-- usually whatever I'm using on my own hair.  I'm interested what other collectors do, too!  :)

This goes back to years ago, but when we'd pick up ponies from the carboot sale, we'd be cleaning them up with soap and stuff. I needed something to wash pony hair and we had some Pantene which we discovered wasn't working for our hair, but for the ponies,it worked great. I still use a mild pantene shampoo mixed with water (so diluted) to shampoo hair of ponies I pick up at carboot sales, and it still works, on all generations so far.

I use Bath and Body Juniper Breeze and whatever conditioner I am currently using(usually only condition if their hair seems dry). It goes way back to when I first started collecting- I had Juniper Breeze when I got She-ras(the first thing I collected). So I washed them in Juniper Breeze and it would make me think of new She-ra figures whenever I smelled it- lol. My mom still buys me Juniper Breeze body wash and little does she know that I use it to wash toys :) and I don't have the heart/guts to tell her what I use it for. I've never asked her to buy it, she just thinks I really like it. She never has been very thrilled with my toy collecting.

I wash them with a kid's shampoo and conditioner mix, then condition with whatever conditioner I have again for extra silkiness

ya I use Dawn to wash the whole pony and then condition the hair with generic dollar store conditioner.  I should try a real brand one day, but so far this is working for me.

Was about to ask: is there any additional advice or info I need to know if I'm going to wash a pony who has tinsel in her hair? I have three or four of these ladies who need a spa now. I don't want to damage them by accident. Thanks!

just by doing what I normally do but muchh more careful :D
just be careful near the ends where there's usually knots, don't pull too hard you might rip a few pieces of tinsel out!

I use liquid soap on hair and body for washing. For conditioning I use the L'Oreal post-haircoloring tubes of stuff, since my everyday conditioner is silicone free and not as effective. In general, I don't buy products especially for ponies, so I use whatever is on hand.

If I'm fixing up a pony to pass on, I do like to use fragrance-free products if possible. I get headaches from strong scents, and I know other people can be even more sensitive to that kind of thing.

If it's the clear, iridescent tinsel, I try to avoid stretching and heat, both of which tend to make it even more unruly in my experience. The colored metallic tinsel is sturdier, so I don't make as much of an effort to treat it differently than the rest of the hair.

I use whatever conditioner is on hand - as long as it's not a coloured conditioner on white hair. I remember someone saying that some of the orange conditioners can change the colour of pony hair. So just to be safe I stick to white conditioner. The last time I happened to grab a dog one. Worked perfectly fine and left the hair glossy and shiny :D I tend to use a bar of simple soap for the washing.

I've been using Aussie-brand moist for both customs and original ponies. Haven't had any issue with it yet! :D

I use cheap conditioner. And I have used it on tinseled pony hair -- just be careful (which I'm sure you would already be) and don't get hasty and impatient when trying to straighten and de-tangle the hair. :)

For the initial cleaning, I've used a variety of things, but I usually have some shampoo around for cleaning ponies, too.
