Hamster Surprise!
« on: May 13, 2015, 04:24:53 PM »
I've been saving my spending money for the Puppy Surprises that are coming out in a few months. Today we went to the pet store. I spent my Puppy Surprise money. I bought a Hamster Surprise instead. Meet Kalani! Will she have 1 or 20?!? :silly: Oh and we bought Jaymee some mealworms. Because Jaymee is spoiled.

AND WE HAVE BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And these will probably be the only pics for a while. I don't want to stress her out. I only risked these because she didn't seem at all worried about me being there, but I don't want to push my luck.

How cute! I suspect Hamster Surprises are way more fun than Puppy Surprises. :)

She is SO cute! But she is making be a nervous wreck! She's quite the little acrobat and in the process of exploring her new world she's dangling and climbing all over her new cage and her wheel and then dropping to the ground. It's like in my head I know she'll be fine and the drops really aren't that far, but it is panic inducing when she does it.

Awww! I hope the birth works out!

The title of this thread reminded me of my guinea pig surprise. It was a bit more of a surprise for me... I had two guinea pigs for a short time, but the second one I had died shortly after I had adopted him (I think there was something wrong with him already when I got him) -- but at the time I had thought he was female. Later my one guinea pig, Oreo, started to gain a lot of weight -- but I thought that she had been eating more to make up for the fact that the other guinea pig was missing. Nope! One morning I awoke to the sounds of lots and lots of guinea pig squeaking. I jumped out of bed and looked in the cage: there were three new, very healthy tiny guinea pigs running around the cage! And the new mommy was resting happily in her little house. They all grew up to be healthy and happy. It was just a huge surprise for me, who had been a teenager with no experience in breeding guinea pigs. Good thing it's apparently a lot easier than breeding hamsters (smaller litters, parents don't try to eat their young... etc.)!

Oh wow, she is getting close!  Awesome that you brought her home, stores are not a very good environment for raising hamster babies. One quick tip - before the pups are born, you should remove her wheel from the cage. Some hamsters will continue to spend all their time on the wheel, when they should be sitting on their kids! (That's what we call it - "Go sit on your kids you silly hamster!") She should spend almost all her time in the nest.

LOL That would be surprising! Though I'm not sure I'd say breeding Guinea Pigs is easier. If mom is too old and it's her first litter, it could kill her! Things should be fine for Kalani though. I'm just hoping she waits a few days to have them so she can settle in well first and won't be over stressed. I haven't raised a hamster litter in a while. It will be fun to have them around again. I *think* I could hand raise them if I have to at this point, but I do NOT want to. I just want her to be not stressed and not try to eat them. If she waits a few days though, I don't foresee any trouble. She's healthy and active. Eating well and...... Oh joy. Her water bottle is leaking. Gonna have to fix that. Anyway, she should be having them fairly soon, considering her size. Or.....She's going to get much bigger and have far too many. :silly:

And here's a picture of Jaymee waking up to get a mealworm. Then the camera died....

Hamsters make such awesome pets. When I was in junior high I bought one I didn't know was pregnant. 13 days later she had 6 babies. I can't wait to see pics of your hamster's babies!

Oh my gosh!! That is so exciting!  I cant wait to see how many she has! I was down to four Gerbils and just bought myself a new little girl last week(now 5). I hope to have some more little ones when she is old enough.

You will have to post pictures when they are born! :)
