G1 Baby Brightbow Variant?
« on: April 26, 2015, 10:59:35 AM »
I have two Baby Brightbows at the moment, one is the normal pink color and the other is a coral color. I thought at first that it was discolored, but upon further inspection I have noticed that the coloring in uniform all over the body inside and out. The markings on the feet are exactly the same for both and the hair is exactly the same for both. Do I have a variant of Baby Brightbow or is she just some poor unlucky pony? Any help would be appreciated and a price for the coral colored baby would help as well. She does have her forelock trimmed. Thanks!

There are variations on all the Rainbow Baby ponies, though pinning them down can be a bit tricky.

THis is my childhood Baby Bright Bow, which looks to me a lot like your coral one?

She was bought in the UK in about 1991. I don't think this is a UK/US variation, but if you compare your two ponies, does the more coral coloured one have coarser/wavier hair than the pink one?

The two deviations I'm aware of are very silky straight hair on one set and rougher, sometimes curly on the other, and I am sure I've seen Bright Bow body shade differences in relation to this before too - but I haven't got any of the silky haired set except the well known Starbow, so haven't been able to do a firm comparison in person. I have this sense that there may also be variations in hair colour tone as well but I am only theorising...

Both of the Baby Brightbows have silky straight hair. The only difference in the hair is that the coral one has shorter hair, but I think that is due to someone cutting it since the forelock is trimmed as well.

I actually just saw a Baby Bright Bow on Ebay which has what looks like a coralish head and a pinkish body (I am not linking because it's an open auction) and silky hair. Most all of the silky haired Rainbow Babies I've seen come from the States originally, so it might just be that those produced for the UK/Euro market had an inferior grade of hair (common in 1991/2 ponies in the UK so not unlikely) and the body tone variations exist in both places...

I don't know anything about whether it's a variation or not. I do know that, regardless of how it got that way, it's very pretty and personally I like it better than the regular pink one.

Do they have the same country of origin under the hooves?  I'm seeing eye paint color differences that look similar to the Hong Kong / China split in Summer Wing Ponies.  (soft grey-brown matte vs black semi-gloss)

The feet are stamped exactly the same, both were 'Made in China'.

If it is in fact discolored how does a pony get discolored evenly throughout it's whole body inside and out? That's what boggles my mind.

Also if anyone wants her she is for sale, in whatever state she is in.

I am going with the discolour option unfortunately (combined with batch variation in production). Discolouration can be caused by a lot of different factors - not simply sun exposure or not by sun exposure alone. This means the plastic can "fade" or "yellow" throughout the whole body, inside and out, as its the pigment polymer within the plastic which is affected. Its most common in reds and purples. You can actually find Bluebelles which have their entire body turn white (inside and out, completely uniform) but perhaps their head has stayed purple!
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Thank you! I am finally glad I have an answer to her difference. It is still very peculiar that it can happen as so, but kind of cool at the same time.
